Word spread like wildfire on Wednesday that President Biden was offering jobs picking cotton for $300/hour.
TikTok comedian @teddy2stupid commented on the job offer in a video on Wednesday.
“I know what y’all thinking, I know what y’all thinking,” he said. “Give me a second, I know over the years we’ve been having a problem with the cotton-picking and stuff and, you know, we don’t really take this too kindly. But I ain’t gonna lie. $300 an hour? I ain’t gonna lie, this is better than his job! Sign me up!”
A quick search of the Internet failed to return a credible source for the very generous job offer.
Assuming a 40-hour work week, working 48 weeks per year, a person earning $300-per-hour would take home a gross salary of $576,000 annually.
However, according to Newsweek, the president is not offering $300 an hour jobs to pick cotton.
Newsweek says the fake headline originated from the Instagram account Hoods News.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, no one in America hand picks cotton anymore. Cotton is “mechanically harvested using specialized equipment.”
