A Florida rapper is behind bars facing second-degree murder in the shooting death of her manager.
Aspiring rapper Kevhani Hicks was arrested Monday after police said she fatally shot a man around 1:35 a.m. in Wynwood, WPLG reported.
Hicks, 27, who raps under the name Key Vhani, appeared in court Tuesday, where her public defender told Judge Mindy Glazer that her client feared for her life.
The attorney called the shooting a “clear case of self-defense.” However, Judge Glazer denied bond, saying, there was probable cause for second-degree murder.
Judge Glazer said, “the victim was walking away and she shot him after he was beating on her.”
Police found surveillance footage that shows Hicks getting out of a white Lexus sedan before the driver gets out and starts punching Hicks, and throwing her to the ground, according to NBC Miami.
A second man gets out of the back of the Lexus and also starts attacking Hicks, the footage shows.
At one point, all three ended up on the ground with the second man on top of Hicks attacking her, the police report said.
Police say Hicks shot the victim as he was walking back to the Lexus. He was pronounced dead at Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.
Police are still trying to find the driver of the Lexus to get his side of the story.
