Jonathan Majors’ upcoming movie Magazine Dreams has been removed from Disney’s release calendar amid his ongoing legal battle in New York.
Disney confirmed Friday that Magazine Dreams does not have a release date. The movie was previously scheduled for release on December 8, 2023 without a movie trailer.
Disney-owned Searchlight Pictures acquired the movie at this year’s Sundance Festival in February, a month before Majors was arrested on assault charges.
Magazine Dreams is about a Black developmentally delayed amateur bodybuilder who struggles to find a human connection amid celebrity and violence.
Majors was praised for his performance in Magazine Dreams, and movie reviewers said his acting was Oscar worthy.
But others see close parallels between Majors’ film character and his real life struggles with anger and alleged domestic violence incidents.
Majors, 34, was charged with misdemeanor assault for allegedly choking and punching his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, during a cab ride on March 25.
Majors denied the allegations, and claimed it was Jabbari who attacked him that night.
Jabbari was arrested in Manhattan on Wednesday, Oct. 25.
Majors’ legal team filed a counter-complaint against Jabbari in June, which generated an NYPD I-Card investigation. The NYPD couldn’t close the I-Card case until Jabbari was arrested.
But the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office twice informed the NYPD that it had no intention of prosecuting Jabbari.
On Thursday, the D.A.’s Office issued a statement saying the case against Jabbari is “closed and sealed.”
Jabbari’s arrest drew criticism and at least one accusation of a publicity stunt by all parties involved.
Cary London, a Manhattan-based civil rights and criminal defense attorney, called Jabbari’s arrest “highly unusual” and a “publicity stunt.”
“The arrest of Ms. Jabbari is a complete publicity stunt by the defense team behind Mr. Majors. In a domestic violence case, the NYPD will usually never make an arrest of the complaining witness, Ms. Jabbari, because it is viewed as retaliatory,” he said.
Insiders claim Jabbari, who is a citizen of the UK, was paid to fly to New York and turn herself in to the NYPD.
