A former NFL running back is in police custody after going on a robbery spree in Southern California.
Derrick Ward won a Super Bowl ring with the New York Giants and earned nearly $2 million in his 7-year NFL career.
But police say he robbed five gas stations in Southern California, according to NBC News.
Ward, 43, faces 5 felony second-degree robbery charges, according to inmate records. He is being held in jail on $250,000 bail as of Thursday, Dec. 21.
Ward was selected by the New York Jets in the 2004 NFL Draft, but the Jets cut him before he played a game.
He played 5 seasons with the New York Giants, and won a Super Bowl ring with the team in 2008.
Ward retired from the NFL in 2012 after playing 2 seasons with the Houston Texans. He fell on hard times and went on a robbery spree in California where liberal politicians are soft on crime.
Former Giants teammate Tiki Barber told the New York Post that Ward had a rough upbringing.
“It’s just sad to hear. He was from a rough environment, and it felt like he was at a point in his life where he escaped it. It’s shocking because I feel like he got his life right,” he said.
