Gayle King said a man she once dated asked her for a $4,000 loan. She said they only dated for 2 months when he asked her for money.
She gave him the $4,000 because he said it was for child support and furniture payments.
King, 69, said the man eventually paid her back, but she didn’t feel the same about him.
King recalled the incident during a recent sit-down interview with “The Pivot” podcast hosts Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor and Channing Crowder.
First date
“I went on a date. I was really excited… We’d gone out maybe two months and then he said he really needed to talk to me. He wanted to have a private conversation… (He said) ‘Do you think you could lend me $4,000?’ I’m like, ‘Oh God.'”
King later shared the man’s personal business with her bestie Oprah Winfrey.
“You know what Oprah said, ‘God, I would have felt better if he had said $40,000.'”
King said she asked him what he needed the money for.
“I was so crushed because he was somebody who was making, you know, six figures, successful. And when I said, you know, could I ask what it’s for? He said, Yeah, it was for a child support issue and to pay a payment on some furniture. [And I said to myself] ‘Oh God, this is just getting worse.'”
She said he paid her back a few days later.
“He did pay me back… but I didn’t feel the same… it just changed the relationship for me.”
Dating is difficult for me
King said being billionaire Oprah’s bestie makes dating difficult for her.
She said a man once told her, “‘Gayle, look at your shoes … look at your bag, look at your coat. You’re friends with Oprah [Winfrey].'”
“A guy looks at that and says, ‘I can’t compete with that.’ But my thing is, it’s not a matter of competing. I’m not looking for someone to compete.”
I’m attracted to men who curse
King said men of color who curse are attractive to her. “I love how a Black man says ‘MF baby.'”
“Nobody says it like y’all,” she added.
“It’s just the way that it’s said. I don’t even know how to explain it to you… I love how they say ‘Hey baby.'”
King went on to explain that a curse word can be a term of endearment. “Or it could be ‘I’m really pissed.’ But there’s something about the way a Black man says it. I’m just attracted to that,” she said.
She added: “You don’t want somebody with a potty mouth. But sometimes a well-delivered curse word is – is very intelligent to me.”
