Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Thanksgiving wouldn’t be a glorious holiday without great food such as turkey and all the fixings, macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, appetizers, desserts and more.
Consumers complain that food doesn’t have the same taste that it used to. The decline in food flavor is attributed to agricultural practices, lack of quality control by the U.S. government, processing methods, chemicals in our food and more.
Cultivated Comfort blog compiled a list of Thanksgiving staples that don’t have the same taste anymore.
1. Tasteless Tomatoes
Tomatoes today lack the sweetness and acidity that once made it a culinary delight, leaving consumers dissatisfied and yearning for the taste of homegrown varieties. Many commercially produced tomatoes are bred for durability and uniform appearance rather than flavor.
2. Strawberries Aren’t As Sweet
Strawberry lovers notice they lack sweetness and can be bitter and dry as the flavor is diminished. This could be due to the use of commercial pesticides and fertilizers that alter the taste of strawberries. As consumers notice the difference, many are seeking out organic or locally sourced options in hopes of recapturing the authentic strawberry experience.
3. Flavorless Chicken
Soul food isn’t the same when the chicken is flavorless and tastes completely different from the old days. This change can be attributed to the mass production of poultry, which often involves chicken feed that prioritize weight gain over taste.
4. Apples: Not Red Or Delicious
Apples have not only lost their flavor but also their color. Apples come in bags labeled red and delicious, but the apples inside the package are neither. They are often ruddy looking and taste like cardboard. Again, the loss of flavor can be attributed to fertilizers and mass production.
5. Potatoes: More Starch, Less Flavor
Mashed potatoes, French fries, potato casseroles have all lost their flavor. Many people have noticed potatoes are tasteless, waxy and bland. No amount of seasoning can bring out the flavor. Consumers are turning to organic farms or growing their own potatoes.
6. Flavorless Bread
Have you noticed bread tastes bland and grows moldy quicker? Loaves of bread are dull and tasteless. It could be that the ingredients have changed in favor of highly processed ingredients that ensures the bread won’t stay fresh in your pantry. Consumers are baking their own bread from fresh ingredients.
7. Coffee: A Bitter Reality
Mass-produced coffee varieties have led to bitter tasting coffee. I personally don’t drink coffee, but consumers are complaining that coffee brands leave a bitter taste in their mouths and are less aromatic. Consumers are increasingly turning to specialty coffee roasters to rediscover the flavors that once defined their morning brew.
