Government funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) ran out on Saturday, November 1, as the government shutdown continues.

Some states have stepped up to help families in need. But the White House says it won’t provide SNAP benefits due to the government shutdown.

One family took matters into their own hands on Friday when a grocery store stopped accepting EBT.

A viral video on X (Twitter) shows the family, including children and a toddler, stealing edible goods from a Grocery Outlet store in California.

“We got the whole team helping. No EBT,” the woman said.

A Rhode Island federal judge ordered the Trump administration to use $6 billion in a contingency fund to pay SNAP recipients.

SNAP recipients include 20,000 active-duty military families, the elderly, and people on disability.

“There is no doubt that the six billion dollars in contingency funds are appropriated funds that are without a doubt necessary to carry out the program’s operation,” Judge John McConnell said in his ruling on Friday, Oct. 31.

Judge McConnell gave the Trump administration until Monday, November 3, to respond to the order.
