Whitney Houston’s mother Cissy Houston disputes Bobby Brown’s shocking announcement that Bobbi Kristina Brown is awake and responsive.
Brown, 46, made the surprise announcement during a concert at the Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie, Texas, on Saturday.
He told the stunned crowd that Bobbi K. was “awake” and “she’s watching me.” He added that she was off the ventilator and “breathing on her own.”
Brown’s pregnant wife Alicia Etheredge-Brown added to the confusion by confirming Brown’s statement that Bobbi K. was “awake.”
“He is encouraged by the steps that Bobbi Kristina has made since her hospitalization on January 31, 2015. She has made it out of ICU, opened her eyes, and started a rehabilitation that will be long and hard,” Etheredge-Brown said in a statement released on Monday.
But in a statement obtained by E! Online on Monday Ms. Houston contradicted reports that Bobbi was awake and responsive.
“I have just returned from visiting my granddaughter Bobbi Kristina in the hospital and while she is no longer in a medically induced coma she has a tracheotomy and according to the doctors she has global and irreversible brain damage and remains unresponsive,” she said in the statement.
Ms. Houston said she was saddened to learn that her granddaughter can remain on machines in a perpetual vegetative state for the rest of her life.
“Meeting with the doctors and understanding that she can live in this condition for a lifetime truly saddens me,” Cissy said. “We can only trust in God for a miracle at this time. Keep us in your prayers.”
Bobbi Kristina, 22, was found face down and unresponsive in a bathtub at her Roswell home on Jan. 31.
After brief stays at North Fulton and Emory hospitals she was moved to DeKalb Medical Center’s long term acute care facility in Decatur. The length of stay for long term ventilator-dependent patients at DeKalb is usually 30 days. After that they are moved to a nursing home that provides skilled nursing care for ventilator-dependent patients.
