A Los Angeles man was slowly cooked to death when a co-worker filled a Bumble Bee Foods pressure cooker with 12,000 pounds of tuna and turned the machine on.
Jose Melena, 62, was inside the 35-foot long pressure cooker performing routine maintenance before dawn on Oct. 11, 2012 at the Santa Fe Springs plant, when he died.
A supervisor discovered Melena missing an hour later, and co-workers searched the facility and parking lot looking for him.
Melena’s body was found when the machine was turned off and opened 2 hours later. Temperatures inside the cooker reached 270 degrees.
The worker who turned the cooker on said he mistakenly believed Melena was on a bathroom break.
Los Angeles prosecutors on Monday charged Bumble Bee Foods and 2 factory managers with three counts each of violating safety procedures.
Angel Rodriguez, 63, plant Operations Director, and former safety manager Saul Florez, 42, face up to 3 years in prison and fines up to $250,000 if convicted of all charges. Bumble Bee Foods faces fines up to $1.5 million, the NY Daily News reports. The San Diego-based company was fined $74,000 in 2013 for violating American safety regulations.
The state’s occupational safety agency mandates that safety measures be in place at factories where workers enter heavy machinery.
In response to 189 industrial workplace deaths in 2013 (like the accident pictured above), the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) developed a safety program called “Lockout, Tagout”.
Workers are trained to lock and tag the heavy equipment so it can’t be operated while a worker is inside. In most cases only the worker inside the machinery has the key to remove the lock.
Bumble Bee is appealing the penalties.
This is so sad. I cannot imagine going out like this
I had to see this AFTER I spent a bankroll in the grocery store last night smh
**crosses tuna off da list of go-to foods**
Pretty soon I’ll be on homegrown produce and that’s it.
OK. First of all God bless his soul for having to endure so much pain. I am teary thinking about it.Second man
This made my migraine WORSER.
This is horrifying. Bumble Bee and any other company that doesn’t do it’s absolute best to ensure the safety of its employees deserves to be sued. 1.5 million seems like a paltry amount.
Morning Roses :wave:
I HATE WHITTY’S GRAVI
It’s really sad. These food documentaries really open your eyes to what goes on behind the scenes.
Food documentaries make me never want to eat certain foods again
Good Morning Sandra, Lovezoe, Trini, Wasting Time, Juan, Taken
, MuvaDrag, Whitty
AJ/ :waves/
A.J. what you been up to?
I think it is allergies and my sinuses. I am going to work on my Resting Bih face today to see if folks leave me along. I cannot. This me today
Man my head hurt sooo bad. It has been a minute since I had migraines
This is exactly what I was afraid of, making illegals legal and their mindset is of the drug cartel in Mexico.
On another note, I think my cleaning lady got locked up and you know I got her money when her ass get out. They don’t forget chit, especially debt owed.
If you buy the off brand tuna remember to check where it is canned
could be this human tartar anyway
@taken
Have u tried Excedrin Migraine? I’ve found that it works even for sinus headaches.
AJ…but does she still have a job with you though?
Her crew does a good job!!
_______________
Yep as soon as I here from her.
“MuvaDrag”…I like it.
@WHITTY
I have some in my purse. Excedrin is the only thing that has ever worked for me. Even better that when I had a prescription about 12 years ago one time. I was trying to see if it would go away on it’s own. But I think that is not going to happen
@A.J. is your cleaning lady legal?
Excedrin Migraine WORKS. All I need is one.
Also try peppermint oil around the perimeter of your head.

Good morning, everyone! Yeah, I don’t believe that was an “accident” either.
@AJ
I was thinking the same thing abt illegals. I’m thinking they didn’t fully comprehend the purpose or process of lockout/tagout.
It’s really sad this guy was smothered then cooked.
What is that thing in Whitty gravi?
A.J. what you been up to?

Taken I’ve been so busy the past three weeks!! We have a new managing company that will take effect next week. I’ve put a rumor out there that I’ll be leaving and the niggas/heaux ran with it. I ain’t going nowhere!!
Yea it seems to me that a lot of the “accidents” seem to be happening with illegals or people that don’t speak much English
Peppermint oil is good too.
Excedrin Migraine works better than prescription migraine meds without the side effects. You’ve had a few migraines back to back lately. They could be what’s called cluster headaches. Have u heard that term before? If not do a little research on it.
2012?!?

All the tuna with Jose in it has been consumed.
I have to take one Excedrin migraine and one aleve and it’s all good!
I have cluster headaches from time to time. Horrible. I used to take Aleve, but not anymore. A nurse recommended taking the aspirin with caffeine, but my Excedrin has caffeine in it already.
@misu
“THING”!!!!!!! How u kno that ain’t my dear ol momma???

It’s straight murder.

Yep I have … I haven’t changed anything. If anything it has been for the better. Working out more at a gym… eating healthy still mainly
no major food intake changes in products. Let me google. That’s why I said allergies. And I have been nauseous off and on. I know that can come with migraines though based on my previous issues with them. And nope no
let :stop: shut that down now

I always take 2 Excedrin Migraine. Maybe I’ll try one next time and see if that works…no sense in taking more than what’s needed.

Damn shame this made me want Waffle House hash browns.
People who suffer from cluster headaches get them at the same time each year, such as the spring or fall.
only thing is they say it is normally not accompanied by nausea but hey maybe I’m different
But everything I pasted is spot on. Thanks guys :hugs:
The trigeminal nerve also stimulates another group of nerves that causes the eye tearing and redness, nasal congestion, and discharge associated with cluster attacks.
What Triggers Cluster Headaches?
The season is the most common trigger for cluster headaches, which often occur in the spring or autumn. Due to their seasonal nature, cluster headaches are often mistakenly associated with allergies or business stress. The seasonal nature of cluster headaches most likely results from stimulation or activation of the hypothalamus
Type of pain: The pain of cluster headache is almost always one-sided, and during a headache period, the pain remains on the same side. When a new headache period starts, it rarely occurs on the opposite side.
The pain of a cluster headache lasts a short time, generally 30 to 90 minutes. It may, however, last from 15 minutes to three hours. The headache will disappear only to recur later that day.

I did the education
You’re welcome. I’ve had them off and on since senior year of high school…sometimes with nausea sometimes not. I had all of my wisdom teeth removed because the doctor/dentist thought that was the causing the pain but it ended up being CH.
Best thing is to take something the moment u feel pain…don’t wait. I’ve tried laying down thinking the pain might subside on its own and ended up worse off. I have left restaurants mid-dinner, GPS’d the nearest conv store/gas station, etc to get something before that pain gets all the way crunk up. I’ve even begged Mr whitty to jess cut my head off cuz it hurt so damn bad.
