The former NFL player whose wife was shot and killed by his mistress who then shot herself, revealed he gifted his mistress with the SUV involved in the kidnapping and murder/suicide.
Police say former schoolteacher Lisa Brown, 49 of Lithonia, kidnapped Sandra Barnett, 58, from her home in Clayton County on Wednesday.
Brown (pictured top right) held Barnett at gunpoint as law enforcement pursued her Dodge Durango on I-20 into Alabama. The vehicle eventually came to a stop in the middle of the highway, where Brown shot Barnett then turned the gun on herself.
Brown was the mistress of Barnett’s husband, former Buffalo Bills tight end Buster Barnett, 56.
Sandra Barnett taught special needs students at McNair Middle School in DeKalb County.
Buster Barnett told police Brown came to his job on Wednesday after she found out he was taking a trip with his wife.
Brown was upset because she didn’t know about the trip, Barnett told police.
Police say Brown left Barnett’s place of employment and headed to Barnett’s home in Ellenwood.
Sandra Barnett was on the phone with a friend when Brown showed up at the house. The friend heard what sounded like a struggle before the call ended.
The friend told police she called a male friend to go and check on Barnett.
The man told police he drove past the Barnetts’ home and spotted the Dodge Durango parked in the driveway. The man said he drove past the home and turned around. By the time he drove by the home again, the Durango was gone, Clayton police told Channel 2 Action News.
Police spotted the Dodge Durango on I-20 in Carroll County on Thursday. They pursued the SUV into Alabama.
Clayton Police spokesperson Charlene Watson-Fraser told Channel 2 Action News, “The driver stopped in the middle of the highway, pulled out a handgun and shot (Barnett) and then turned the gun on herself.”
Watson-Fraser said the Durango was registered in Buster Barnett’s name.
Barnett told police he purchased the Durango for Brown because he was “trying to help her out.”
Brown last worked as a school teacher at North Fulton High School until 2013 — the same year she was arrested for kidnapping her 12-year-old daughter from the girl’s father, who had full custody of her.
A judge sentenced Brown to probation in 2013.
