Milwaukee is quiet today after a weekend of rioting as residents took to the streets to protest the shooting of a 23-year-old career criminal.
Mayor Tom Barrett is standing by the Milwaukee officer who shot and killed Sylville K. Smith during a traffic stop on Saturday.
Barrett imposed a 10 p.m. curfew on Monday to keep youthful law breakers off the streets after 2 days of looting and widespread destruction of property.
During an appearance on Fox News on Monday, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke (pictured above) blamed social media and the collapse of social order for the violence.
“When social order collapses tribal behavior takes over. The law of the jungle replaces the rule of law and that’s why you end up with what you saw. Last night it was a little better, not good enough for me. I won’t be satisfied until these creeps crawl back into their holes.”
Barrett said the unidentified officer’s body cam video will show Smith was carrying a handgun when he was shot.
“There is a curfew that will be more strictly enforced tonight for teenagers,” Barrett said at a news conference. “So parents, after 10 o’clock your teenagers better be home or in a place where they’re off the streets.”
