The election of Donald Trump as 45th president of the United States has renewed the call for a “Black State” separate from the United States.
The Daily Caller News Foundation recently reported on a column written by Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison under a pen name while he attended law school.
The DCNF wanted to know if Ellison still believed the United States government should section off land in the southeast corner of the United States for black people, similar to the land set aside by the U.S. government for Indian Reservations.
The so-called “Black State” would have an independent set of laws. All public officials, doctors, nurses, shop owners, etc. would be black.
Similar to the Indian Reservations, there would be no taxes, meaning the income you earn is what you keep. Your home would belong to you, not the homeowner’s association or the state tax assessor.
But perhaps the most significant change is there would be no white police officers killing unarmed black men because they feared for their lives.
The proposed “Black State” would include all or parts of Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi.
The DCNF reached out to prominent black politicians after failing to hear back from Ellison to hear their take on the proposal.
Georgia Rep. Hank Johnson said: “I don’t see anything really objectionable. What he apparently proposed was a partitioning of the United States into a southeastern section.”
When asked if what Rep. Ellison proposed was black nationalism, Johnson said, “I don’t know what to call it. It seems to have been born out of academia, a thoughtful discussion on possibilities.”
“These are not ideas that have not been discussed by black folks throughout history,” Johnson added. The Georgia congressman said that while he is not in support of the ideas now “there was a time when I would have been.”
