The family of a New Jersey man is speaking out after they spotted a decaying foot resting on top of his casket as it was lowered into the ground at a cemetery.
The grieving family was burying Cleveland Butler, 85, at Mount Holiness Memorial Park when they spotted the rotting foot attached to a corpse in the plot next to his.
A family member snapped a photo of the leg wrapped in plastic with the attached foot as it rested atop the casket.
“This was a very traumatizing situation, first dealing with losing my father and then this,” Butler’s daughter, Sandra Butler, told the New York Daily News.
The family is considering taking legal action against the funeral home.
Normally, bodies are buried inside sealed caskets, but some funeral homes rent out caskets to impoverished families who can’t afford funeral expenses. Later, the funeral home dumps the deceased into the ground and refurbishes the casket to be rented to other families.
First
Wow, that is horrible.
Well damn
you know what… https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/f67f52436e7eb92e51ac9c04e5df649823acdb2436dafcc0e03fe4670396d14c.gif
A stinking business! I once watched a video that a man made, concerning practices at funeral homes. He was in the business for many years. He shared, a main focus is to play on the emotions of the surviving family members; to milk as many finances as possible. He did say most caskets eventually fill with water, even sealed ones..?
Not just rented caskets!! They r just dropping everybody’s bodies in cardboard boxes and reburshing most caskets! Y did this make me laugh , this is sad
The man is dead. It was a mistake. Let it go and move on.
I saw that smh
It’s not a mistake if they dump the body and refurbish the casket!
That is very upsetting. I can only imagine how the family must feel about that in addition to losing the grand father
I hadn’t no idea you could just burry someone outside of a casket, none.
hope this NEVER happens to your family. smh
I went to a funeral a few weeks ago and they told us the casket would be buried 12ft under. I guess they’re stacking bodies now, but we knew it would happen eventually. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/6117da671f174ad27a09952b8d3044e1aa47e2adba5b1e485ad589c3bd4a4520.gif
I wouldn’t go so far to sue the place, long as it wasn’t my loved ones foot.
Let the Church say AMEN.
LoL… let me gtfoh! This has me weak ???
Lmao..
It probably already has and no one except the grave diggers saw it.
lmao
I didnt know you could rent caskets. I guess that varies by state. I don’t mind be thrown in the ground after the fune. My fam can do something else with that money.
“The family is considering taking legal action against the funeral home.”
Well this is the wrong party to sue no? Normally the cemetary employs the gravediggers.
And a picture of the “foot” isn’t enough, for all they know that could be a tree root that happens to look like a foot.
In some parts of world Jews are buried no casket. Andy Griffith didnt have one either. He was buried 4 hours after he died. Its called a green burial I think.
Funeral homes getting way out of hand. With there practices and there prices smh my family has specific instructions to cremate me. Save that money and keep it moving.
Casket rentals!!! NEVER heard of this…Im so confused Im taking a break from this page!
How a king size bed cost a grand and a casket cost 8 thousand smh these folks losing they mind trying to come up grieving families
Just read. No state law requires use of a casket for burial or cremation. However, some cemeteries indeed may require them. These folks may not have a leg to stand on. No pun intended.
Funerals are so dang expensive, and caskets are extremely overpriced, imo. I always had a feeling that these companies overcharge for caskets, and burials, then weeks to months later go dig up the bodies and re-use the caskets. I could be wrong, and I hope I am, but ive always had the gut feeling that people end up burried without a casket when its all said and done. Any one in here that works at a cemetery? lol My cousin digs the holes late at night, but ive never really asked him what all goes on there. Plus he has a brain tumor and his reaction/response time is very delayed, so yeah, ive never asked him.
Casket Rentals? wait what? does it come with insurance because this is just scary. If I would have seen this I would have panicked and screamed.
So we just burying bodies wrapped in trash bin liners ohh ok
exactly.
Caskets are a grand at Wal-Mart.com and Costco has some for $950
Eye Am weakkk cuz this is so meeeee
How is this legal? Dead bodies breed disease.
Lawd now walkmart sell caskets. Im so done!

Taking Notes…Family save that money. Wrap my arse in Saran Wrap and call it a day,it’s not like I’ll remember and get mad.
funeral homes stay scamming people
It’s a huge racket..caskets can cost thousands..cremation is the best,
…dust we are and dust we will all return…
You can rent a casket if you’re having your loved one cremated. I didn’t know about renting one for a viewing & knowing that your loved one would be discarded wrapped in plastic. That just seems so cruel.
Passes all the way out.?
See smh you know it’s about money when Walmart get involved . Plus all the funeral extras smh Preacher , limos, plot of land, church fee, gravedigger fee. It’s ridiculous smh
Ima tell my family to smoke my ashes like 2pac lol
Comes to find out in some states you dont even have to use a funeral home. get you one of those Wally caskets and contact the cem. direct for burial prices and cut all of that extra out. Funerals used to be held at folks house, like that Chris Rock and Martin movie.
I bet they will be high as a kite..?
*goes to research cremation* https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/9d465041cfaadc9080119da3ebc9e8e678679d3b3b44dc4f5fce24974c1de281.gif

On a serious note, black folks have to start creating a will cause people in our community getting taken advantage of. And life insurance. JS
Normally, bodies are buried inside sealed caskets, but some funeral
homes rent out caskets to impoverished families who can’t afford funeral
expenses. Later, the funeral home dumps the deceased into the ground
and refurbishes the casket to be rented to other families.
ARE YOU SERIOUS? I KNOW THAT IS NOT LEGAL……………….
I AM HOLLERING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HAVE YALL SEEN THE MOVIE THIS SCENE COMES FROM, BAD GRANDPA?????https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/bb4264f7d4d7227830d50436ebc02fe52f854ab6633bc6dbb91c04c30c8efcd0.gif https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/b029c76378ea5eb0d17be0ae40b316f329298b08b0b47105020d3c5aaea4a82e.gif https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/615d380290005c75f2b73b61063d678adb00cb683258e4273a2f5c12b8d5723d.gif
Beaware!
When you go to a the funeral home, IT IS A SELLS JOB to get the entire “CHECK” from you.
Do DIRECT SERVICES. CREMATION IS BEST.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY, CONFUSING IT WITH LOVE.
a tree root….
please leave and don’t come back. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/615d380290005c75f2b73b61063d678adb00cb683258e4273a2f5c12b8d5723d.gif
My mom got mad when i told her they can burn me up. She told me she didn’t want to hear that foolish talk ?. But, i don’t see why we cant make our on pine box like back in the day.
Exactly
This is disgusting
sure was at the house… I remember going with my grandmother to somebody’s house and they talking bout ‘they bringing Bud home’ my little azz didn’t know “they” was the undertaker and “Bud” was dead and ’bout to be toted up the stoop, ‘cross the porch, and rolled to the back wall of the living room… https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/1968927fc9f7ea0297445f43270353a6adb203786ec00a62d1d42a47f581442d.gif
LMAO!!!!!!!!!
Me too. I don’t want a funeral, with people I haven’t talked to in years showing up lying about what a good person I was.
Stfu! You vile sack of shyt. Bish i hope you feel the same way when its your loved one. Smh heartless fool
Normally, the body is removed from the casket and cremated. There are environmental laws/statutes in every state but I don’t believe this is legal in any of them. Then again, I called the city when my dog died. They said if I could dig a hole at least 6 ft deep that I could bury him in the yard. If not that deep, then I was prohibited from doing so. Human decompose the same way animals do so maybe the plastic baggie bodies routine is legit.
Fake friends are the worst smh
What?
that up top looks more like a burlap potato sack… https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/5a16feb7886870b58e876a7ffc6b264e7419e743bb55ec579123b82d4a427799.gif
What part of her comment warranted that response?
Well damn. that wasnt nice.
Nah
you know it’s a couple bishes gone show up just to make sure you dead, LOL!
That’s the disrespect I’m talkin bout. That’s why I wanna be cremated amongst other things such as grave robbers and organ harvesting.
Someone close to my family just passd that comment was flat out cold blooded. No way you tell someonr to just move on. My heart goes out to the family
Problem solves user blocked. I dont need to read nasty comments like that
It wasn’t heartless it was just the truth. Sometimes it’s hard to swallow but it’s truth.
New post
Amen on the insurance part. I’ve seen too many situations where black folk are scrambling around to get a few thousands dollars to pay the funeral home etc.
It just adds extra stress & anxiety to an already stressful time for the family.
My dad was cremated and put in newspaper and a plastic bag. When we went to “spread his ashes” in his favorite spot, there were large bits of hair and bone. Death sure ain’t glamorous!
All Facts
GAWD! In my youth I dug up a persian kitty in my back yard. My mom still swears it wasn’t ours. We were breeders lmao.
OMG!!
Lol
I am a mortician by trade and this is extremely unethical. There is no reason to rent out a casket when the indigent can receive a cloth covered casket. These people at the cemetery & the funeral home are just no damn good! Cremation is best!
My granny caskets was sealed shut.
You wanna be cremated? You must remember tri-state funeral and cremation where they were dump everyone body into the furance at the same time and with tree and ?.
Someone didn’t pay for that casket and their family was removed and thrown back in the hole. That totally f’d up.
Thank you Ni Ni, thats all I meant.
Thank you Ni Ni…. It’s nice to see some of you knew what I meant.
How awful
OMG!! I was just about to talk about this as well. I know my family never used them because the shipping took too long
OMG!! I was just about to talk about this as well. I know my family never used them because the shipping took too long
I’m weak!
I’m weak!
Jesus..
Jesus..
The Mexicans and Puerto Rican’s still do it this way
You forgetting the headstones some people get “buried” above ground horses carry the casket to the graveyard I seen all types of nonsense.
Gotdamnit! I just sat down to eat my sandwich for lunch only to be greeted by this “rotting foot” headline
I mean……nevermind…
Yeah and ashes don’t fly, they dump. No spreading, its not beautiful.
Wow.. they are supposed to grind the remains that happen after the cremation so teeth and other things aren’t noticed. Some funeral home ask if you are going to memorialize or spread them and offer that option..smh sorry about that..
Ay, caramba!!!!
Nah son…they supposed to bury the poor in pine boxes…they doing something unethical here!
Whaaaat???
They bury folks with clothes but no shoes?
I wanna be cremated and planted with a tree…
LMAO. Don’t know why, but this photo made me laugh. Looks like a yeti foot to me, don’t know if I believe this.
I thought that if families didn’t have money for a funeral that the county will bury you in an unmarked grave in a pine box. Don’t they do that for deceased unidentified persons??? Doesn’t make sense to rent a casket, it’s dumb, how is that even legal??? Cremation still costs money and some families don’t even have money for that. Even some life insurance policies aren’t enough for a burial. All of it is highway robbery if you ask me. It costs thousands to be born and thousands to die. Although insurance covered it, when I had my son, I had a six-figure hospital bill!!! WTF??? Sad.
The family needs to sue if they can, ridiculous. That funeral home is probably burying bodies with no casket even after families have paid for one!! Sounds fishy. And for everyone mentioning cremation, CREMATION STILL COSTS MONEY!!!! If most people can’t pay for a funeral and burial, then they probably can’t pay for cremation either if they are poor or have low income. Funeral homes are a business just like any other company. For the excessive prices they charge, along with their nasty ass attitudes, there shouldn’t be any problems when you are trying to give someone a final resting place. Sad.
what if the body was buried in wood back in the day and the wood disintegrated? this happens quite often in cemeteries where the indigent are buried, the ground is unstable, and there are no vaults. nevertheless, they are supposed to inspect the day before, remove any body parts,, bag them up, and bury them back before the burial.
I asked about that. You can wear shoes if you like or not. I told them I wanted to be buried with a nice pair of 6-inch hooker heels and they said no problem!
i don’t believe the casket was rented. the casket probably disintegrated. that foot was hella preserved though.
i thought tri-state was the one where nobody got cremated and they were scattered around the property? i’m kinda on the fence about what i want to do. i want to be with my child, not in the ground forever in some place. do you kids will like take your cremated remains with them. i’d rather rest on the mantlepiece or something. on top of the refrigerator.
i can guarantee you he has hella stories to tell!
viewings were in-house back in the day. kids had to spend the night with grandma nem laid up in the living room. that wasn’t THAT long ago. my aunts told me the dead people used to sit up, pass gas, and all kind of sh*t.
i don’t know why the funeral home is mentioned. this foot clearly didn’t come from the funeral home. this is a cemetery issue.
I want a mausoleum.
Chile, this made national and international news. It happen in GA in the late 90s , early 00s. The fed raid the ? out of GA funeral and cremation places after that. The owners went to prison.
I could tell a number of stories. I went with a friend to his brother’s funeral and after the graveside service, I ran into a few people I hadn’t seen in years.
I left but came back for some reason, I think maybe to give my # to somebody who was there, I can’t remember, but 45 minutes later I was back and nobody was there–except two grave diggers.
Then the shock came: one of the undertakers was jumping up and down on the casket–in the grave.
I screamed at him, and asked him what in the hell he was doing. He said he was trying to get the casket to level out. I told him that was ridiculous and that he was gonna crush the coffin. He said he didn’t think that “dead muthafucka” would mind.
I was shocked. I told him I was gonna call the family back out there and let them know what I’d seen. I was also concerned because I know that my friend’s brother had been buried with a nice watch and necklace that I believe these grave diggers had probably stolen.
I told the digger he needed to be fired and or arrested. He laughed.
The family took their sweet time checking into things and by then it was all over.
most people leave before the casket goes in the ground. i was doing some genealogy and was walking around a cemetery and i saw them acting a plumb fool with one of the caskets. once the family is gone, they are rough with it. after seeing that, i always said i’m sticking around until it’s in the ground completely. i also want to see them start throwing the dirt on but they do it with a backhoe now. they wait a long time so that you don’t want to stick around but i need to see my peoples go all the way down or you don’t know WHAT happens.
cheaper than in-ground but i always wondered like if there was a back door and you walk through there and see all those leaky, dripping disintegrating coffins. supposedly, they are slanted downward and backwards so the fluids go somewhere.
cheaper than in-ground but i always wondered like if there was a back door and you walk through there and see all those leaky, dripping disintegrating coffins. supposedly, they are slanted downward and backwards so the fluids go somewhere.
OMG
OMG
And I think families need to stop burying people with stuff because I am convinced those things end up getting stolen.
And I think families need to stop burying people with stuff because I am convinced those things end up getting stolen.
thank the Lord I didn’t see NONE of that! (I still can’t stand the smell of those fune carnations though… and when we go down south and I see a wreath on a front door, I get palpitations) https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/3a5f6182adf7601cc7d6bd7651b790edefe1d56085936c9c74c4b8a2232152d5.gif
Wow…let me see if amazon has it now. Smh
I will never understand poor people who literally bury their money in the ground.
Lavish funerals are for people who have coins to waste. Besides, no matter how much money you spend, it won’t bring the decedent back or make amends for nasty sh/t you did to them when they were alive.
Cremation is cheap. Use it.
If you can’t afford a funeral or cremation, then don’t claim the remains. The state will cremate them and dump their ashes in a shallow grave in a potter’s field.
Mines will be sealed.
“refurbishes the casket”??? This is a thing??? Ewwwww…that’s like wearing someone else’s underwear!
You should never ever ever bury people in jewelry or anything of value. It’s best to keep it for yourself or give it to a family member because the workers there are most definitely going to take it. My great aunt had a flower shop and she told me that the funeral homes take those nice sprays and resell them.
In Los Angeles indigents are cremated if the body goes unclaimed. They had a “potter’s field” long ago and would bury in a pine box. Too expensive now.
welp I didn’t know and my mom didn’t have the money so we got what we got. Its been ten years now. I’m over it. Not over my loss. I know something is going on with you. I gets better.
I need a moment…
How morbid. Are you ok Sandra Rose?
In Ghanaian custom they bury their dead with no shoes so that their ghost dosent make any noise…apparently
This is why I’m getting cremated! Funerals and burials are overrated ! Ashes to ashes…dust to dust!
??????. But wait. What does it matter at this point..
I would still be screaming right now if I saw that dead foot flopped out like that ?
Oh wow! It was that expensive to bury someone in a wooded box with no headstone???!! But L.A. is a big city, so maybe it was. But the cremation still costs, so I would think with so many unclaimed bodies that the cremation would be expensive too. I think the average cost is around $1,100 or so, sometimes cheaper or more expensive. It’s just sad thinking of someone dying with no family, but that’s how many will end up. Don’t even get me started on all the folks in nursing homes and no one comes to see them. Sad. Be careful how you treat others. I’ve learned that what happens to us in our old age may just be karma in some cases.
Oh. So I guess the family wouldn’t get to say goodbye if that’s the case then. Geesh. I guess that’s why it’s important to have life insurance. No one wants to be burdened with trying to come up with money for a funeral and burial when they’re already grieving the loss of their loved one. So sad.
It could be a homicide victim placed in a recently dug grave. Where is the casket? The state doesn’t require vaults to place the casket into as opposed to directly in the ground like an old pine box?
If you truly can’t afford funeral costs that’s what insurance policies are for, the minimal cost per month will insure you don’t get brutalized after death. I remember once at work the family left the woman’s remains and went back to NYC and never heard from them again. So after two weeks of her leaking and causing hazmat care handling to intervene because the morgue is never really over 42-47F my boss filed for state aid which everyone even the poorest can apply for and get free to little cost for cremation ($1000-$1500 our dept/main hospital was charged.)
Very true. Google hart island.
It does look quite fresh doesn’t it?
Oh my god. You mean to tell me that they didn’t see that when they dug the hole? They need to go down for this sh!t
I’m familiar with Hart Island. At one point, family and friends of the indigent buried there, couldn’t visit their gravesites.
That’s very sad, although I don’t believe in mourning over a site, cremation for me all the way, make me one with the ether.
What??? They just left their loved one like that??? Wow! Maybe that loved one wasn’t so loved I guess. I thought the morgue was colder than 42 degrees. I thought it had to be near freezing since the bodies are dead and some badly decomposed. The funeral home has a freezer too, I didn’t really think of that until I found out. When my grandma died, I asked the funeral home if I could see her before they prepared her for her casket. They had the nerve to say they weren’t sure if I could. I threatened to call the police and the city because I thought something fishy was going on. They immediately took me back and I saw her after they pulled her out of the freezer. I don’t play when it comes to someone I care about, These funeral home personnel need better attitudes and better training.
I have the same wishes. Cremation has always appealed to me. No fuss, no muss.
Who rents caskets?
Fake news, that foot alone would have stop them from even lowering the casket,But on the other hand funeral homes are scam artist that’s why they don’t cover the casket, until the family leaves so they say.Yes the throw your love ones body and the dirt and take back that 5000 casket bet that ashes to ashes, dust to dust
I keep my family ashes and go to botanical garden were iam from in the Bronx. And let them go in the water
Loss is hard to recover from. I know I’m still grieving my mom and it’s been 4 years…
It could be a missing person whose body was dumped there
I really don’t see the big deal here,..hell they all DEAD anyway!
Creamation costs a small fraction of a funeral. Where i’m from it’s $550 to get cremated never mind the the amost $15K my parents paid to bury my brother.
Honey i would never tell someone up Just move on after a death in the family. My i have a heart. Unlike you
I never said tell someone to just move on. But death is inevitable, like I said, it’s hard to swallow but it’s truth. One thing we don’t have to argue about is death. We will all die. Period. I hate it happened how it did but I can’t control that. Be blessed.
Chicagowise: Lavish funerals are for people who have coins to waste. Besides, no matter how much money you spend.
It’s about impressing the Jones so no one will talk bad about you.
Unfortunately, too many black people waste our time (and money) worrying about what other people think.
I don’t think the desire to keep up with the Joneses is restricted to black people. One of my favorite shows is an old Britsh program called, “Keeping Up Appearances.”
It’s about a neurotic white woman who insists her last name is Bouquet, when it’s actually Bucket. LOL!
I’ve seen that before.
It’s hilarious.
I dont get why they’re suing? FOR WHAT?
My condolences, not sure when your brother passed; having to plan a funeral only adds to the grief and stress. Dying is very expensive, so life insurance is the best bet it seems, or so we think. The problem is that low income families may not have money for extra monthly bills when they already have a hard time trying to make ends meet. When I tried to get life insurance years ago, it was hell. They ask too many damn questions and I learned that insurance companies DO NOT pay for all causes of death. If you don’t die from natural causes in old age, there may be a delay or issue with the company releasing funds for burial. Insurance and funerals are a dirty business just like entertainment. Sad.
Ya the post you did and the conversation is over not interrested in replying to some soulless big bish bye
That’s why ppl need to make preened arrangements. Cremation is best because the person (spirit) is gone & it’s a shell (body)that’s left. Ppl get taken advantage of all of theme because they’re grieving & funeral homes know how to get unnecessary money out of ppl. It’s messed up, but typical. No different than any other industry.
Yes it is a dirty business indeed! Insurance in general is a scam…especially those term insurance policies. They give you a cheap rate at the age of 20 and when the policy expires 20 yrs later, they jack up they price to something you cant afford or disqualify you for health reasons while they have taken money from you for 20 yrs and you have nothing to show for it. I have told my family cremate me..do not waste money on a casket and headstone. Engrave my urn if you need to write something about me.
I tried to get life insurance years ago and it was hell. They ask too many personal questions but then the client asks questions, they feel some type of way. I’m not stupid, I’m not signing shit without having a full understanding of what I’m getting into. No way in hell am I paying a monthly amount but yet if I die you may not cover the expenses or release funds to my beneficiaries. I learned that insurance companies will not pay for certain causes of death or circumstances. So if you end up going missing, being murdered, committing suicide, or die but your body is never found, it is a safe bet that the company probably will not pay. It’s complete bullshit. I guess it’s best to just die from natural causes when you’re about 200 years old!!!
When I was in college I had a classmate and her brother went missing for awhile and then he was found dead. Their insurance company would not pay anything until an investigation was complete, and that still did not guarantee payment, so I have no idea how they ended up burying him. You’re already grieving and the insurance company wants to be an asshole. They make enough money to pay but they don’t like paying and they have the rudest employees working for them. Anyone who sells insurance should be shot! I bite back even harder, I’m not about to be talked to like I’m trash, I don’t give a fuck how educated or knowledgeable someone is about their little career. FOH!
Yes, I guess you’re right she might have been someone they may have not had any love lost for which is so very sad. It was really bad, the smell, the leakage of decomposing bodily fluids constantly being hazmat hosed down (she also died with MRSA frequent flyer) ugh just pure sickness. It may have been turned up colder to slow down her decomposition but it still wasn’t a freezer, but this is a (school of medicine) hospital morgue. And omg. Funeral workers have to be empathetic and compassionate to work with the dearly departed because they need to bring comfort to those grieving families, I’m so sorry for your loss my ?, and am appalled at their treatment towards you. If you ever want anyone to jump threaten them with media attention, nothing they fear more than bad press. Cops won’t do ish.
I agree. I would rather celebrate the life than just focus on the death. Plus I believe in what the Bible says at Revelations 21:4. I told my wife “cremate me, get some shirts with a good pic of me for close friends/family to wear while you play the music I like and do some of those activities.” Save the money and remember the good.
The funeral business exploits people when they are at their most vulnerable. That’s another reason we shouldn’t postpone expressing and preparing for our final expenses. Plan for the crisis before it arrives, not after.
