LeBron and Savannah James

Power couple LeBron and Savannah James are improving the lives of children in Akron, Ohio with their high-impact education program. In an interview with Vogue magazine, LeBron and Savannah discussed his LeBron James Family Foundation back-to-school orientation for at-risk students in his old stomping grounds.

LeBron, 32, is working with public schools to identify the child most at risk.

“Before the James foundation, it was a struggle to get parents involved,” said Keith Liechty, the coordinator of school improvement for Akron Public Schools.

The program began with 232 students five years ago has now grown to more than 1,200, according to Vogue.

LeBron, Savannah, 30, and the foundation staff meet with regularly with school officials to communicate the students’ goals and needs.

It’s a powerful experiment that bucks the charter school–heavy trend of public education, radically proposing to give more to the students who have the least—as his “uncle” has noticed. “When you can change a kid’s life for the better, you’re accomplishing something great,” says Buffett, a well-known cheerleader for public schools. “With LeBron, it comes from the heart, and it comes from having been there.”
