In yet another sign of the times, a Georgia middle school teacher was suspended for assigning homework to her sixth grade students that featured explicit lyrics by rapper Kodak Black.
Crishana Wright, pictured left, was understandably alarmed when she reviewed her daughter Kalani’s homework and read what appeared to be explicit, violent and sexually suggestive rap lyrics.
Kalani, right, told her mother that her teacher assigned homework featuring lyrics from rapper A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie’s collabo with Kodak Black, titled “Drowning”. Kalani said she was instructed to exchange the negative lyrics into something positive.
The teacher provided an example of changing negative lyrics to positive. For example, instead of the lyrics “I’m drowning,” she used “I’m rising” “because we always rise above.”
“I’m reading all these words and I immediately asked her why she had this and she said it was an assignment,” Wright told WSB-TV.
Wright said she understood the teacher’s intention, but it wasn’t well-thought-out.
“You’re dealing with children’s minds; you have to be very cautious,” she said.
DeKalb County School District Superintendent R. Stephen Green said in a statement that the teacher used poor judgment and she was removed from the classroom.
Kalani told WSB that she knew her mom “would be mad” when she brought her worksheet assignment home.
Sadly, none of the other parents complained about the homework assignment.
