A Brooklyn mom at the center of a “troubling” viral video was previously arrested and charged with two counts of credit card theft and one count of identity theft, according to ABC News.
Jazmine Headley, 23, was arrested on Friday when she refused to leave a Brooklyn food stamp office after waiting four hours for help.
Headley took a day off from her job as a security guard and went to the food stamp office in Brooklyn to find out why daycare vouchers for her 1-year-old son were cut off.
The food stamp office was crowded and Headley took a seat on the floor with her baby son, Damone.
Human Resources officers asked Headley to stand up because she was blocking a hallway and “disorderly conduct towards other people.” When she refused to leave, staffers called police.
Cellphone video showed officers ripping Headley’s baby son away from her. As usual, the video only shows a small part of what actually happened.
Headley was charged with resisting arrest, committing an act in a manner injurious to a child, criminal trespass and obstruction of governmental administration.
A judge issued a restraining order barring her from coming near her baby.
Following the uproar on social media, the trespassing charge was dropped, but Headley is being held on an outstanding warrant from an unrelated case.
According to ABC News, Headley was indicted by a grand jury in March 2017 on two felony counts of third-degree credit card theft and one count of fourth-degree identity theft. She was arrested on July 23, 2016, in New Jersey, as part of a police investigation into a counterfeit credit card theft ring.
The Brooklyn District Office said it was reaching out to New Jersey to “expedite her release.” Damone was placed in the custody of Headley’s mother, Jacqueline Jenkins, who witnessed the incident at the food stamp office.
“I was devastated to see something like that happen to my daughter and grandson,” Jenkins, told ABC New York station WABC-TV.
A police union defended the officers’ actions.
“These police officers were put in an impossible situation. They didn’t create the dispute at the HRA office — as always, they were called in to deal with the inevitable fallout when the rest of our City government fails in its task,” Patrick Lynch, president of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association of the City of New York, said in a statement.
He said the officers were doing their duties trying to protect the mother and the child.
“The event would have unfolded much differently if those at the scene had simply complied with the officers’ lawful orders,” Lynch said.
He also addressed the social media’s tendency to overreact to incidents such as this one without benefit of all the facts.
“The immediate rush to condemn these officers leaves their fellow cops wondering: when confronted with a similar impossible scenario, what do you want us to do? The answer cannot be ‘do nothing.'”
What does that have to do with her baby being savagely ripped out of her arms? Now she’s gonna be a recovered credit card theft who has millions in the bank.

In short, a minor avoidable situation occurred that could’ve easily been avoided, the police were called and as usual they over reacted.
1. I imagine the security guard that approached her had a nasty azz attitude. It’s my experience that a lot of them have delusion of grandeur, ESPECIALLY if they get to carry anything other than a flashlight.
2. Police reform is needed. Period. Even if she was being unruly, how in the hell is them yanking and pulling on that child deescalating the situation.
3. She needs a good lawyer. Resisting arrest is a police officers go-to-charge when they can’t charge you with any thing else. Nevermind the fact that in most states you are legally permitted to resist an illegal arrest.

The people that work at the social services office in New York treat people like shit, they don’t dive a damn what your circumstance is. I know this because when I was a student back in the day I went there for assistance. It is truly a toxic environment. She had already been waiting for four hours. They will literally have you wait for 8 hours until your number is called, imagine waiting that long with a child and being treated like shit from the workers. Everyone their is extremely frustrated. If she would have left she would’ve had to take another day off of work with her child to go the next day and wait just as long as she waited the day before. Working in health care, I see this kind of behavior all the time. Being in a hospital can be stressful for anyone, but Medicaid patients seem particularly prone to violent outbursts and uncivilized behavior. Some say, their actions are driven by a sense of entitlement.
While the police were a bit heavy-handed, a rational mother’s first instinct is to protect her child. A reasonable woman wouldn’t have gotten into a physical confrontation with police, while holding her baby.

The cops should have never applied force to remove the child from her arms like that. That’s just as if someone were in a hostage situation. Cops wouldn’t put the life of the hostage at risk at the chance of detaining the person that is the threat. I did not even watch the video because social media is a lie.. you only get a quarter of the story. Who am I to judge? Maybe shes right in some aspects and wrong in others. this headline is dumb as hell. d@mn get it together. there’s no such thing as a “food stamp” office. it’s called the department of social services. they have many service they provide. so why even attach “food stamp office” to this article when it clearly states she was there regarding her childcare voucher. ignorance at it finest!!!!

Her prior convictions might be the reason why her daycare vouchers ended. They definitely have something to do with her being in that office in the first place.
I’m sooo hoping it’s not d3ad. I’m always thrilled when someone says “Thank you for shopping at Walmart”.
However, with our current administration in office I don’t look for a law on Good manners being passed.

They could have easily found her a chair she had been in the office for hours before she and her one year old sat on the floor.
I see where she coming from. I go to work with joy and I he dealing with harsh girl in another office when I have to request. I hate going over there because of her. I deep in my heart wish we come together. The world hates black women and then we hate each other.

why did the feel the need to try to rip the baby from her arms??? did they not know that was doing more harm than good?? What if they would have broken that baby arm or something in the struggle…who’s fault would that be?? I feel like this whole incident was totally unnecessary….she did not have a place to sit, hence why she sat on the floor…..that is the problem…police always want to create more chaos rather than not escalate the problem…that many folks should not have been trying to pull the child away…period…smdh…

Bless mom and her baby some don’t have a plan B and rely on childcare to keep a job. My job let me sneak mine in when plan B wasn’t avaliable, some are not fortunate.
I wonder how many able-bodied adults were not kind enough to offer their seat to at least the 1 year old. Man when I was a kid growing up in Bklyn, my father would make my little brother and I get up out of our seatson the bus for women. No questions asked or fussing, we knew to immediatelt get the hell up.

This is about Black folks trying to help other Black Folks. Diverting, scapegoating to avoid dealing with issues pertaining specifically to helping Black folks is why all these different protests, etc. soon fall on deaf ear and forgotten about.
We can’t be all over the place talking about the problems belong to other ethnicities while needing to fix our own. Latinos, Whites, Asians, Indians, genders issues, etc. have their own political leaders and groups to help their own people.
Stay focus. -unfortunately, it took the Whites & gay communities to give this woman justice. Where were her own Black people in power who could have made some serious phone calls to right this wrong?
That’s what happen Black folks start talking about what’s happening way over there with the Latinos instead focusing on identifying, addressing & finding reals solutions for the own problems. If it weren’t for those folks, she would be rotting in jail. smh
I guess it is the result of long waiting lines with no place to sit other than the floor while needing to hold her young baby. The article said all seats were taken. She was desperate to be seen that day. No voucher for childcare/daycare means losing her job and being sued by the babysitter. -good news is political figures came to the rescue & got her released with charges dropped.
I am glad that the charges were dropped. I hope that she takes this as a lesson. Next time…leave. It’s just that simple.
It’s a pretty sad state of affairs. The entire system needs to be overhauled.
Her prior record has nothing to do with how she was treated. And that is the only reason her record was made public on the news. They do this every time someone has an altercation with the cops. It’s a way of tainting our perception in favor of the officers, like “Oh, well she’s a hardened criminal, she must have deserved it.”
You know, you might be on to something. The “president” immediately comes to mind.
Would I feel she and her baby deserved to be manhandled the way they were? Absolutely not.
Patients, their friends, and family members will severely test your limits. The nurses have it worse, because they spend more time with them.

They had no business yanking on that baby like that. They wouldn’t have yanked on a yt baby like that, TRUST. Now had they broke that baby’s arm or ribs, or poked an eye out, they would’ve jailed the mother for “making” them do it. This is why “they” can get away with treating us like 3rd class citizens…some of “us” are so quick to side with “them.” Ugh!!

i live in nyc now and people are always combative about everrthang. i know exactly how this played out…they told she cant sit there, she had a attitude, words between her and the security guard were exchanged, they said they were calling the po po she she said call the mf po po , po po called she still refused to move, forgot she was black and BAM!! now shes news with all her other business in the news too.

i am a naturally happy and bubbly person so i prolly would have been on the floor playing with my baby if anything like actually playing games and being silly,,,, and when the people walked up i prolly would have explained myself and asked them for a chair and becuz im just goofy looking anyway they prolly would have brought me one. i cant even count how many times ive been “harassed” by white people but becuz of my calm disposition the situation solved itself… so naw not every black woman… lol
I don’t think she “deserved” anything BUT she should have gotten up and moved out of the way to prevent all this mess.

shes an a-hole. theres a similar story in the bible of 2 mothers arguing over an infant. the king said he’ll just cut it in 2. the liar said, “fine, do it”. of course the real mother pleaded, “please dont. just give her the baby.” the king knew who the real mother was after that.
the police stooped to the same scum level as this trifling mother and could have injured that baby. when put in this situation again,(and im sure there will be now that people will be using their children as shields to evade arrest), they need to concentrate efforts on the suspects arms/limbs to pry them apart, not playing tugofwar with babies’ limbs.
