Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts now says there were “a lot of red flags” in the Jussie Smollett hate crime case. Roberts says “a lot of people noticed” red flags before Smollett was ultimately arrested for faking a hate crime on himself.
Roberts was heavily criticized by people who believed she was too soft during her exclusive interview with the former Empire star. For example, she refused to use the word “alleged” during the Feb. 14 interview.
Others believed Roberts cooperated with authorities to trap Smollett by asking him specific questions that were key to the investigation into the hoax attack on Jan. 29.
Roberts, who is openly lesbian, was tougher on Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson during his appearance on Good Morning America on Monday.
Roberts was more aggressive with Johnson than she was with Smollett, who is also openly homosexual. She challenged Johnson’s answers and pressed him with follow-up questions.
Incredibly, she said there were doubts about Smollett’s story that he was attacked by 2 Trump supporters.
“Even though you were saying early on that there was no reason not to believe his story, there were a lot of red flags that a lot of people saw and you all had questions,” Roberts said.
If Roberts doubted Smollet’s story, she didn’t express her doubts during her sympathetic interview with Smollett.
“What do you say to a young gay man, a young gay person?” she asked Smollett.
She continued: “If the attackers are never found, how will you be able to heal?”
Smollett’s lies caught up to him when he was taken into custody and charged with a felony for fiing a false police report.
He also faces a felony charge for sending a threatening letter through the U.S. Postal Service.
