Atlanta’s radio listeners will suffer a setback this Fall when the new Arbitron ratings system takes effect according to a radio industry insider. The “next generation of electronic ratings” is based on a new system called the Portable People Meter which already has radio programmers pulling their hair out.
The creator of the new system was in town yesterday delivering the bad news to area radio stations. Urban radio programmers say the system is unfair to urban formats because it uses volunteers to wear portable meters which pick up signals from radios in the area. The problem, say the programmers, is that there won’t be enough volunteers wearing portable meters in urban areas.
The PPM system is already in place in major markets such as LA, Houston, Philadelphia and New York. Stations that were once riding high on the Arbitron charts saw their ratings plunge. WBLS shock jock Wendy Williams‘s show plummeted from the #1 spot out of the top ten when the system took effect in NY last year. Her contract is not expected to be renewed.
Several stations in Atlanta will be forced to change formats come August when the system is launched here. But one Atlanta urban radio station is set to close it’s doors for good according to my source.
They won’t have a problem if they give them to the homeless, who roam more than buffalo.
Ha! @ 1
Can’t it be both major urban stations there? they add like negative value IMO
Wait what? Contract not renewed? Surely you jest!!!
Ok. Which station is it?????? How do volunteers get one of these monitors. With all the traffic in the Atlanta area, surely this can be resolved by giving commuters something to do in traffic….lol
This is very sad. Well I listen to my MP3 Player anyway!!!
Sandra Y you so sensative when it comes to Monica, Beyonce and JAY? U really cracks me up with not allowing comments.
Sandra!
I’m so GLAD you touched on this Radio situation!! It’s about time.
I’m a 10 year Radio Vet. i’ve been in S.C, Florida and GA.
Arbitron is getting “hip” to these tricksters in BROADCASTING. These Program Directors, Music Directors/WHORES use SEX and MONEY to get they’re OUTLANDISH ratings.. Paying CASH to some listeners to FILL OUT DIARYS, bribing listeners with concert tickets and even having SEX with folks for HIGH rating promises..
I ain’t one to gossip, so u ain’t heard it from me!!
There is a simple solution to this problem but I get paid to fix these types of problems (Like alot of PD’s in ATL) If you want the answers hit me up, but ain’t a damn thang free… You gotta pay to play (Not Payola!?!
Mr OkTobA

Well,
Since your pulling my leg and all!
One of my PD’s (at the time, he’s a BIG VP of Programming now) got sued by 2 different female employee’s for sexual harrassment, and even though he was found GUILTY,and the company had to pay out $$$ to both ladies (of course one of the chics was “BLACK-BALLED” from Radio)the company SEALED his records and KEPT him working for them because he was PULLING IN THE NUMBERS!!!
They covered up his records not only in the city we lived in, but also in OTHER cities that he presided over.
I wonder if anyone can guess who this dude is??
….Talk about getting away with MURDER….
That’s too bad! I know this is f*ckery when Wendy’s show goes down. I love her show and listen via internet.
I just want to know is the dj from the morning show and i am not talking about hot1079.
completely irrelevant to this post..but Sandra blocked me, so im gonna comment here..
1.) Monica is engaged? gtfoh!!
2.) Lil Rock looks cute asleep..
3.) you Googled Monica to find out about the delivery?you’re kidding right?
4.) Outside of Atlanta, Monica news is scarce..maybe that’s why Google only had 2 stories
