Here are preview clips from the movie being hyped to death by Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry. The title of the movie is Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire. Push is the recipient of both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival.
Push stars Mo’Nique as the abusive mother of Precious Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), an illiterate, morbidly obese teenager who is raped by her father and bares him two children.
A resentful Monique feels overburdened with caring for the mildly retarded offspring of her daughter and husband. Monique does her usual outstanding job of making you feel her role.
Unfortunately, as an actress, Sidibe is kind of just there on the screen. This role which requires a liitle bit more than one-dimensional acting.
I’ve never seen a central character weight a movie down like she does (no pun intended). Sidibe says she never acted before and it certainly shows in the previews.
Oprah loves these emotional, over-the-top, innocence overcomes evil type of movies where the central character is a weakling who suddenly finds her strength by the end of the movie. Yawn.
But the surprise of the movie is Mariah Carey, who stars as a sympathetic social worker who attempts to reach out to Precious. Mariah most definitely stepped her acting game up a notch since Glitter, and we are impressed!
Paula Patton and Lenny Kravitz round out the cast of Push which was directed by Lee Daniels.
hey i’m first!!!! any way..can’t wait until the movie comes out.
I can’t wait to see this movie.
The clip I saw of MARIAH I was happy for her. Did she take acting lessons. This is what I’m talking about, respect the craft. You just can’t jump up there and start reciting lines.
I wish someone would write MONIQUE an OSCAR winning part, she brings it everytime she’s on the screen.
This movie looks like it’s going to be a good one. As for Asibe, the clips that I just saw on this video leads me to believe she did a great job. I don’t feel like she’s just sitting there…
*Sidibe
Sandra did DJ Khaled kill himself? The LA time are reporting that it was a business man of Palestinian descent?
yeah, this is a MUST see….Kcicero, I agree Asibe DOESN’T look like she’s just sitting there!
it looks like it’s going to be a good movie. and judging from the trailer and related clips on youtube, sidibe did an excellent job capturing the essence of the Precious character. as usual, monique kilt (yes i said “kilt) it and hopefully there will be some Oscar buzz for her role.
ive been hearing about this movie FOREVER, did it not get picked up by a studio or something? at any rate, I cant wait til it comes out! now I have to go buy Shadowboxer to figure this Lee Daniels out see some of his work! I cant wait for the movie.
Morning all!
Yes, I think I will check this movie out when it comes to the theatre. Looks like I will enjoy it. Oprah doesn’t endorse junk. LOL
I think the character that Sidibe plays is one-dimensional in the majority of the book as well, so if she appears flat it would be because she the fictional character she is based upon is also. Sidibe as Precious is the right fit and just the right amount of everything needed to portray this child who is illiterate, HIV +, sexually, physically, and emotionally abused by BOTH her mother and father, and has 2 children by her father. I think that towards the end of the movie there will definitely be character development and growth. Looks like it will be good.
i can’t wait to see this movie. after glitter the thought of mariah acting made me cringe , but i see that she’s getting better . glad that lee daniels saw gave her a chance and i’m glad she took advantage of acting lessons. seems like all of them did a great job. i wish them all luck with the movie.
Sandra I am surprised you are complaining about Sidbe. She is not mixed or light skinned.
kc i just read on another blog that dj khaled called into a radio station and confirmed that he was alive .
Dark Black and OPPRESSED when can we have movies that offer vision and a more inspiring beautiful side of Black people. Even Tarija is around town looking good but she played a “mammy” type role. This looks good though and I will support it.
Sandra–
If you read the book you will understand why the character seems so wooden in the earlier scenes.
I cannot wait until this movie comes out, I hope it does the book and story justice. Its one of the few books that have really touched a nerve with me.
wow niiiiiiiice. i see oscar for monique.
when does this drop??
this looks good.
