A Pennsylvania couple is out on bond after they spent $100,000 of $120,000 deposited into their bank account accidentally.
Robert and Tiffany Williams, of Montoursville, Pa., found the $120,000 in their bank account and forgot to call the bank.
$120,000 intended for a business was accidentally transferred into their BB&T bank account because of a teller error, state trooper Aaron Brown told the Williamsport Sun-Gazette.
Brown said the couple went on a spending spree – knowing the money in the bank account wasn’t theirs to spend.
The Williamses bought a camper, a Chevy and a racecar before giving $15,000 to their broke friends.
They spent a total of $100,000 in about 2½ weeks, WNEP reports.
The bank eventually realized the error and notified Tiffany Williams, 35, that she had X amount of days to return the cash, Brown told the Sun-Gazette.
Brown said the withdrawal resulted in a $107,416 overdraft because the couple had only $1,121 in their bank account.
Williams agreed to pay back the money if the bank put her on a payment plan.
The bank agreed to the payment plan, but Williams stopped making the payments and refused to return the bank’s calls or emails.
The bank pressed charges and the couple was arrested and charged with three felony counts of theft by receiving.
The Sun-Gazette reported that the couple, in separate interrogations, told police that they “admitted to knowing the mislaid money did not belong to them, but they spent it anyway.”
They appeared in court last week and posted bail of $25,000 each, according to The Washington Post.
They paid their way into jail. ?
This is just dumb. They KNEW the bank would eventually correct the error. Shm.
i know its wrong but its the bank’s fault too bad. Fire the teller. Two weeks to discover an error is way too long. Why should someone have to pay for your dumb mistake.
Accidentally my asz! they deliberately spent money that they knew wasn’t theirs. Didn’t these fools know eventually they were gonna get cawt?
2 weeks is about 12 days too long to find that error. They could’ve retrieved 90% of the money had they found it in the first 3 days. That being said…that couple had to know the bank was gonna come for their cash. How did they think this was gonna end??
It was the banks fault…..but it’s also their fault for not notifying the bank.,about 120k in their account.
https://media2.giphy.com/media/Rse8lCnT2SNJ6/giphy.gif
Yeah, it’s the bank’s fault while you’re doing a nickel in federal prison. Play with them feds and their coins if you want…you losing every single time.
Two weeks huh!?! That’s funny. My people already know if we’re not in balance at the end of the day. No one is going home. Not on my watch! They definitely should’ve caught this within the first 48-72 hours
right I just said the same thing lol
I know that’s right!
Judging by what they bought, sounds about white!!
It is the bank’s fault but still have to return the money. Look at it this way if the bank made the mistake of depositing your $120,000 to another person’s bank account wouldn’t you want the bank to be held liable?
A racecar???
BB&T is a lousy bank ? 2 weeks? A large deposit out of nowhere should have triggered immediate scrutiny
Lol!
I ain’t gone even lie, I would have tried to take a stack or two….with the hopes they would say keep it or give me 10 years to pay interest free. But 100 thousand…..they tried it.
“Why should someone have to pay for your dumb mistake.”
Why should someone PROFIT for your dumb mistake?
the bank should pay up not the ppl imo. two weeks is way too long. too bad.
yawn
shrug
Smh didn’t buy one thing that appreciates in value smh not a stock, property, just a bunch of junk smh
1) Two and half weeks to realize. The bank should eat loss, I wonder if couple waited before they started spending to see if the bank would catch it.
2) If the couple waited 3 or more days before they started spending if I were them I’d use defense of we thought it was compensation for long wait times and bad service. Play dumb af
3) When I was young I probably would’ve waited couple days withdrew half and invested in something high yielding. Then called up bank like “This money was placed in my account I thought it was my family but after speaking with them today I don’t know where it came from”. Paid it back monthly while the 50k turned into 100k then to 150k and so on.
That’s why they spent so much so quick.
My bank accidentally put $2,500 in my account back in the day. I didn’t spend a DOLLAR of that money for like a year, expecting them to come for it and, thereby, me.
One day, a brother got a little broke and said, “Lemme barree fifty of these dollars and I’ma put it back when I get paid… well, when they ain’t say, “Un huh – GATCHA!” after about two more weeks, I bar-reed another $100. Next thing I know’d – I ain’t had a DOLLAR, y’all hear me? No, not one.
This was back in 1997 or so. I’m still sked to re-enter that bank in case they got my picture up.
Hello!!! I’m calling the bank & no one leaves until the money is out of my acct. I’m taking names, employee number, supervisor, the whole 9 yards.
I would have withdrawn the 120k and kept it.
When I got out I would have had 120k in cash to just have
Every single gah damn time !
Now see WHY can’t good things like this EVER happen for me? I don’t want to go to jail but I could most DEFINITELY use a BIG financial breakthrough in my life right now! When Lord when?????!!!????
Facts
The bank mad because THEY made an error. Oh h3ll naw. If it was in my account….it like magic…now you see it…now you don’t. IF YOU DEPOSIT IN MY ACCOUNT IT BELONGS TO ME!
It’s a bank. Theres a paper traile. How do they think they can spend money they ain’t put in their account and not get in trouble for it.m? Mistakes happen but this was just a lack of common sense for the couple who spent the money.
To just have? How? You have to pay it back. What’s the point?
I don’t play with jail. I would have called the bank and asked. It’s not worth it.
I’m so scared to go to jail that I would’ve called that bank so fast. I don’t want my name attached to nothing that could send me to that unsanitary place.
People are just so damn ridiculous. Let me tell y’all a story. A coworker of mine used her corporate Amex card to pay her rent ($2,000) knowing darn well you can’t use the card for personal expenses. Well our compliance department saw the charge come through the system and flagged her. She whined and said she couldn’t afford to pay it back immediately. They put her on a payment plan and took a few hundred out of her check each pay. Chile, the last day she was scheduled to make a payment, they marched her butt right up out of the firm. They didn’t even let her take her purse. They brought it outside to her?? People gonna learn to stop stealing. It’s so not worth it!
I would imagine someone that capable has larger fish to fry than making a meager bank deposit disappear.
Damn! You were given a payment plan for probably the same as my student loans and you default on that…Dumb asses…Now not to sound judgmental….I wouldn’t have spent more than my cost of living bills for that month…meaning not more than I could have afforded to pay back…. Like the mortgage, gas, light, phone, car note…insurances….groceries….mani/pedi…hair salon….you know the regular monthly stuff…….Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii….all I need is a month reprieve ….greedy thief….smh…LOL..
That never happened to me but I got a U.S. government check for $950 about two years ago. It had no documentation, but was properly addressed to me. I deposited it and still don’t know what it was for. Now had it been for $950,000 I would have investigated.
exactly!!! all you need is $5000 for a good fix and flip!!!
They are held liable…its called FDIC insured….
If you only knew how many times I tried to explain that to people smh
dummies
Fam, what stock are you gonna invest in to turn 50k into 100k? Lol u think it’s that easy? A good investment might get you $15k profit over 5 years with that $50k.
Why do we think we will get away with stealing!? Put it back or return to sender!!
the fact fact they were allowed to pay back the money by a payment plan also sounds about white. And then they were allowed to refuse the banks calls and emails. If they were chocolate there’s no way in hail they would have gotten a payment plan. Their butts would’ve been charged with grand larceny, wire fraud and everything else. Immediately!
I’d probably take the charge depending on my financial situation. $120k for a month or so in jail? Might even be able to get probation, not like these folks went out to rob someone the bank gave it to them. It’s not right but a good attorney could get these folks no jail time.
It’s not worth it.
That was someone else’s money, so even though the bank made a mistake, they should have notified them immediately. I want a financial windfall but not from stolen money. Then those dummies were passing out cash like it was theirs to give away. I bet not one person they have money too, gave it back.
They still got some of that money cus they went from having only $1100 in they acct to posting $5000 bail.
?
I wonder if their friends had to pay back their 15k? Or did they get off scot free? I mean, if it was a hand to hand then how would that get proven?
Can they take them to small claims for that amount? I’m curious.
Same thing happened to my brother. Smh Young and dumb. But he learned his lesson well.
Was it worth it?!
You ended up paying 50,000 for bail anyway
It’s considered theft and they’re lucky they put he on a payment plan. If you know the money isn’t yours, report it. A bank will get its money back and you will face charges.
I think it would be more like one to three years and don’t forget the felony record.
I “room” with other people. I’d be in there beating azzes because I was mad. They would have to isolate me.
Thank You! I would have been on customer service line ASAP! Get that money out of my account RIGHT now. Let me keep my .31 to myself ?
Hahaha 50k to invest in stock can become much more than 65k in 5 years. 15k is based on investing in large companies that already established, they are lower risk investments therefore if you sell at right time have little increase in value. The money is in new tech, entertainment platforms and social media platforms. I bought stock in Netflix November 2010 through 2011 when it was $24 a share up to $36 and I stopped. In February 2018 sold 25% of it at $285 a share net profit of $130,000. But go on tell me about how to invest with all your wisdom.
Payment play, eh??? With 24.99% APR ????
Yes, the banks are liable. No dispute. After the 1929 Stock Market Crash banks lost customers money and as a result the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation was started.
germs freak me out!
they shouldnt have been fined for the BANKS error
The bank said I was given .67 cents in the Drive-thru that didn’t belong to me. I asked them how did they know it was given to me or if the teller kept it? So they let me keep it. https://media1.giphy.com/media/G3yZQxmuw3PgI/giphy.gif
?
Like the greens, beans, tomatoes, potatoes, chicken, turkey, hog, mawgs……you name it! I don’t know why this came to mind when I read your post! ?
So even after giving them a break with a payment plan, they still acted like fools. Well, jail will teach you.
She thought all was cool, lol!
????? America’s Dumbest Criminals casting look no further. ???
Idiots. Accidental deposit huh? I was a teller when I was starting out. This is weird but okay.
Let me tell you something right now I have been praying and putting actions behind my prayer to have my financial burden lifted of I wake up with 1k or even 100k in my bank account I’m gone take that as an act of Gawd my prayers have been answered and I’m speeennnnding that shiiit just like they did ? https://media2.giphy.com/media/N6YPiXugIM0Io/giphy.gif
Man I had a cashier give me back $20 too much at Sprouts and I turned around and discreetly gave it back to her. Much older African-American woman who was so grateful to me. They were not going to count her drawer at the end of her shift and harrass her if I had anything to say about it. Plus, that’s bad karma..I couldn’t have kept it. It wasn’t mine.
Pulling up to phipps in my new whip like https://media2.giphy.com/media/xUA7aVNURZmx9uZhrq/giphy.gif
Sounds about white.
??????????????????????THIS
????
?
before i finished reading i was saying “so the heffa was on a pymt plan and not fired, must be white”
If I was in their situation I would’ve prepaid all my bills first, then bought some stuff and withdraw money. cause you never know how they going to come at you. the vehicles they bought can be sold and their friends should offer to pay them back in installments.
if it took the bank a long time to catch up then I would withdraw cash. when caught I would say I thought the money was mine and can you put me on a payment plan. its not like they caused the error.
I was already to defend them and then I read about the payment plan. the bank kinda had to press charges. the bank could’ve ate it but they chose not too.
She was Hispanic. The white girls get away with this type of mess?
Amen sis, you think just like me. Karma is no joke.
I would have put 120k on black. If I hit I’m paying that money right back. If not, Im selling free weekend comp rooms lol
Interesting ? When that armoured truck door flew open and blew cash on an Atlanta freeway a few months ago, did they ask for it back ? and Bank of America ATMs had a glitch in Houston by dispensing $100 bills instead of $20 bills, I recall them admitting the error and allowed the miracle-money recipients to keep it. ? …but I guess 100Gs is a different kind of error.
Ida spent dat shit too?
Listening to their equally dishonest and stupid friends telling them, “You ain’t gotta pay that money back….. That was their mistake”
I am amazed at the number of people on here who said they would do the same thing KNOWING the outcome……dishonest AND stupid. A deadly combination.
$100K in 2 weeks, yeah they’re financially responsible. Even if the money isn’t theirs.
Not saying that they were off the hook but the bank agreed to a payment plan and they stop paying. Dick and Jane screwed themselves. Welp they better sell that crap they purchased and make it do what it do.
I woulda had to return that back to the bank immediately!… $1k is one thing but $100k is on a whole other level… The gov’t start watching you when you got that much in your acct.
https://media2.giphy.com/media/I7oVQq8Cp6m08/giphy.gif
This would be me seeing that kinda cash in my account! DEF would NOT have spent it tho!!
I would’ve took that money and flipped in Forex ? i swear ppl are just financially ignorant smh
exactly
Damn I always wanted this to happen to me, but $5000-$6000 so the bank would be like just let her keep it lol.
Broke people are so distracted and focused on fraudulent come-ups that they never realize they never come-up..and stay up.
It’s actually quite simple when your mind is right.
I also see how this couple got married. Two dumb people always find each other when if they were at least marginally smart, they’d know to marry someone smarter than them to stay out of trouble.
Exactly. I went back in the store the other day cause they forgot to ring up my $5 case of water. I will not be a thief. Even if it is there error. I’ll begotten gains beset I’ll begotten gains.
My husband said the same thing lol….
I’d be too damn scared to touch that money, knowing it wasn’t mine.
preach. all of a sudden it’s different now.
preach
They are good I would have spent every penny but on smarter choices !!!!!
What was the couple suppose to do.. shiiiittt you put that money in my account its mine and I”m spending it. On bills tho and a little shopping.
Lol!
You right
Yea because the monies insured
And let the gold chips fall where they may ??
Gurl please ain’t nobody pressed for 20bucks. But a puerto rican chick gave me to much money back at a liquor store.. I kept it and walked right out. ?????
Exactly ! Call it reparations hoe ?
I sure hate this for the couple and hopefully this will be a lesson learned for them as well as others. You cannot keep money that is not yours especially when the bank deposited it in there and you know it is not yours, they should have known the bank or person/business it belong to would question it.
I’ve had $500 deposited into my account by a bank and immediately reported it… plus I did not look good in a federal prison uniform.
My bank mistakenly deposited money into my account while I was on vacation and as tempting as it was to just go on and spend that $$$, I also felt very suspicious of it. I also understood, if my $$$ was missing, I would want it to be returned. The amount was no where near this, it was closer to $6K.
That’s just plain dumb! Anybody with two brain cells between them would notify the bank and see what happened! Clearly these two have zero!
its not your money. give it back..
YESSSSS!!!! THANK YOU!!
LMBO!!!
I was just showing this article to a young lady. Even seeing the consequences, she said she would have spent it because it was their fault for putting it in her account!! I said but look what happened, they got caught and arrested. She wouldnt budge from her view that it was her money because it was in her account.
It’s still stealing….JS
Do you HEAR??ME???
your statement applies to some but it isn’t fair in this case. they didn’t go looking for this. it fell in their laps.
I think they bought things that could be reposed. in case they were caught fast they could just give the bank the car. lol.
I always do this. some places fire people for $3 short.
Integrity isn’t circumstancial.
Lol ? true
Word.. I remember one Time i got a vacation check in my bank account which we usually get it on regular pay period I called the bank and ask uuummm what is this.. this is not Mines where did it come from.. them they do you know this company I said yes I work for them.. LOL OH OK LET ME CHECK WITH THEM.. but I was not going T.I. you h it without knowing where it can
From..
No Integrity period
Yeah not touching it
WOW!!
If it fell in there lap why did they get arrested?? Why is this news we are reading now!!
I remember receiving a $400 direct deposit from the IRS I called the bank and the IRS expeditiously to make sure it was legit lol
They have got to be the stupidest couple I have ever seen. This is some dumb shit just by what they bought….I would have at least did something with the money that would make me money!!! Like open a business or buy a fixer upper house & fixed it..etc. That money would have been an investment, that way when they came a-calling to get it back, I would have been happy to give it back because I have already made a profit! Now that’s how you work the system. But no lie though, I would have either done that OR I would have just spent a small portion like maybe $10000..frfr
Dumb idea because a car loses value as soon as it leaves the lot AND I am sure they already paid more for it than it was worth.
If I were to spend the money it would have been to make more money, therefore actually a SMART move, but still dishonest, but so are banks and the government & every single company you make a purchase from sooooo, if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. 2 whole weeks…trust me I would have at least made a 10,000 profit by then & that would have been 10,000 worth of free money!!! BAM
cause the bank is abusing their standing. this isnt thief but misuse of money.
I know right
hello, that was still a lot
hehehehehehehehehehehehe
