Seattle Seahawks lineman Chad Wheeler apologized profusely to his girlfriend after he was released by the team following his arrest for beating her into submission.
Prosecutors formally charged Wheeler with first-degree domestic violent assault, domestic violence, resisting arrest, and unlawful imprisonment.
Wheeler allegedly told the victim to bow down to him during a role playing exercise. When she refused, he beat her and threw her on the floor. When she regained consciousness, she locked herself in a bathroom and called police.
A friend who shared photos of the victim’s injuries on social media, said Wheeler finished eating dinner while the victim lay unconscious on the floor.
In court documents obtained by TMZ, prosecutors wrote: “The defendant, who is physically conditioned and trained to compete at the highest level of professional sports, strangled, suffocated and beat the victim into unconsciousness — twice — both times leaving her for dead as blood poured from her nose and mouth, and into her stomach and lungs.”
Wheeler broke his silence following his arrest, saying he had a manic episode during the assault.
“Events happened over the weekend that transpired from a manic episode,” Wheeler tweeted.
“I am deeply sorry for the pain and suffering that I have caused to [the victim] and her family. I apologize profusely for the turmoil that I have caused to my family, teammates, fans and those closest to me. The most important thing right now is that [the victim] gets the care she needs and I get help. Both are happening.
“It is time for me to walk away from football and get the help I need to never again pose a threat to another. I cannot express my sorrow or remorse enough. I am truly ashamed.”
The Seahawks, who originally said they were “gathering information” about the incident, released Wheeler from his contract and encouraged him to seek professional help.
“The Seahawks are saddened by the details emerging against Chad Wheeler and strongly condemn this act of domestic violence,” the team said in a statement. “Our thoughts and support are with the victim. Chad is a free agent and no longer with the team.”
