If you are a home buyer who prefers homes with gas stoves and gas water heaters, you may be out of luck.

Cities are pushing builders to exclude gas hookups in new homes and developments to protect the environment.

But chefs say gas stoves heat up quicker than electric stoves and they have greater control over the temperatures with gas flame. Additionally, gas heaters heat homes more efficiently and evenly than electric heat.

Gas stoves are typically cheaper than electric stoves, and electric stoves and water heaters are useless when the power goes out.

Several cities, including Berkeley, Calif., Denver and New York City are banning natural-gas connections to new homes and businesses.

When Berkeley, Calif., became the first U.S. city to ban natural-gas two years ago, the California Restaurant Association sued.

A federal judge dismissed the challenge earlier this month; the restaurant group said it plans to appeal the decision.
