Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott recently donated $2.5 million to an Ohio high school that largely serves minority students. The donation will help the students get a jump start on their college credits, according to TMZ.
Metro Early College Middle & High School in Ohio focuses on STEM (science, tech, engineering and mathematics), while paying to enroll students in classes at nearby colleges and intern at local businesses.
Scott’s contribution will also help provide transportation to the students who need to get from school to their internships and back.
Meka Pace, the superintendent of Metro, tells TMZ that the school typically spends $350,000 per year on enrolling 84% of its students in university classes. Scott’s donation will allow more students to take college classes.
Pace says she’s humbled that Scott noticed the school’s commitment to excellence.
Scott, 52, is the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. She received a record $35.6 billion in stock from Bezos, 58, following their much-publicized divorce in 2019. They share 4 children.
In addition to donating about $12 billion to 465 nonprofits, Scott recently donated a record $84.5 million to the Girl Scouts of Orange County. It is the largest single donation in Girl Scouts’ history.
Scott’s benevolence in Ohio includes a $6.5 million donation to the Columbus Urban League.
It’s unclear what her connection is to the state of Ohio.
