Robert Allen, the fourth and final defendant in the murder of rapper XXXTentacion, was sentenced on Wednesday.
A Florida judge sentenced Allen to 7 years in prison with 5 years credited for time served. He also received 20 years of probation.
Allen, 26, accepted a plea deal that would allow him to plead guilty to second-degree murder in exchange for testifying against fellow defendants Trayvon Newsome, 24, Michael Boatwright, 28, and Dedrick Williams, 26.
The Broward County, Florida judge took into account Allen’s cooperation and remorsefulness when deciding his sentence.
“No sentencing is easy, and this one is hard,” Judge Michael A. Usan said on Wednesday. “I genuinely believe you are sorry for what you have done and not sorry for yourself.”
Newsome, Boatwright, and Williams were given life sentences last month.
XXXTentacion, real name Jahseh Onfroy, was fatally shot during an ambush robbery outside a South Florida motorcycle shop in 2018. The 20-year-old rapper was robbed of a Louis Vuitton bag and $50,000 cash.
After the murder, Allen fled Florida and was captured by the U.S. Marshals in the small town of Eastman, Georgia. Allen was extradited back to Florida and has been in jail since 2018.
Allen expressed his concerns for his safety and well-being before the sentencing. Two Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives and a Multi-Agency Gang Task Force member said Allen’s life would be in danger in prison.
“There is so much violence in the prison system that it doesn’t matter how hard they protect you, if they want to get to you they will get to you,” said Danny Polo, a gang unit member.
Allen has 30 days to appeal his sentence.
