Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks were shut out at the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday, January 7. Both actresses were nominated for their performances in 2023’s The Color Purple.
Fannie was set to make history on Sunday, but she came up short. Fannie lost the Golden Globe to actress Emma Stone for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for her role in Poor Things.
Stone (pictured) raised eyebrows when she called pop singer Taylor Swift “an a**hole” in the press room. Swift cheered loudly for her pal when she won the award.
“I’ve known [Taylor] for almost 20 years and I was very happy she was there,” said Stone. “She was also nominated tonight which was wonderful and, yes, what an a–hole.”
Meanwhile, Brooks lost the supporting actress Globe to actress Da’Vine Joy Randolph for her role in The Holdovers.
Fannie’s fans on Twitter/X were beside themselves with grief. They vented their frustration over the singer going home empty-handed.
One fan wrote: “Theyre not gonna let a big black movie with big black talent be recognized. Danny Glover & Whoopie shouldve won the 1st time [sic].”
Another fan wrote: “no win for fantasia… golden globes trust you will be dealt with.”
And the Golden Globes is trash for not making musical and comedy two separate categories. If they were separated Fantasia would have walked away with it. In my personal opinion The Color Purple was the only full blown musical and got diluted by being in the same category!!!

Oprah Winfrey was disappointed that her film lost. And Ava DuVernay’s “Origin” was also shut out, despite rave reviews.
Barbie, the summer box office hit starring Margot Robbie as the iconic doll, led all nominations with 10 – but lost all except for Best Original Song – Motion Picture, and an award that was created specifically for the movie.
“Thank you so much for the Golden Globes for creating an award that celebrates movie fans,” said Robbie after winning the first-ever Golden Globes Cinematic and Box-Office Achievement award.
Critics said the awards show lacked diversity for the second year in a row.
The BBC said the Globes, “with an unfunny host and no entertainment factor,” were “just plain dull.”
Host Jo Koy, a comedian and actor, apologized when his jokes fell flat.
Koy sparked outrage when he mocked the “rich, white and dysfunctional” Royal Family of England.
He told the audience he only had 10 days to prepare for his hosing gig.
The BBC wrote: “It was the truest moment the television cameras captured at the Golden Globes: an unidentified woman sat at a table and let out a giant yawn.”
