Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis admits she is in a “private” relationship with Nathan Wade.
Wade is the prosecutor Willis appointed in 2021 to investigate Donald Trump’s election interference.
In a 176-page court filing on Friday, Willis admits she is in a relationship with Wade, but she called the claims against her “meritless” and “salacious”.
In her court filing, Willis referred to her relationship with Wade as “personal” and “private”.
Willis noted:
“Any personal relationship among members of the prosecution team does not amount to a disqualifying conflict of interest or otherwise harm a criminal defendant.”
She added:
“the existence of a relationship between members of a prosecution team, in and of itself, is simply not a status that entitles a criminal defendant any remedy.”
Willis denied that she was in a romantic relationship with Wade when she appointed him as special prosecutor in November 2021.
But Wade filed for divorce from his wife the day after Willis appointed him as special prosecutor.
Willis asked a judge to reject motions filed by Trump and other co-defendants to disqualify her and Wade from Trump’s RICO case.
She asked the judge to rule on the motions without a public hearing.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee subpoenaed Willis and her entire office to appear at an evidentiary hearing on February 15.
Attorney Ashleigh Merchant dropped a bombshell on January 8 when she filed a motion on behalf of Trump co-defendant Michael Roman.
Merchant asked the court to drop charges against her client because Willis and Wade were involved in an “improper” and “clandestine” relationship.
Court documents accuse Willis of hiring her boyfriend, and paying him twice as much as two experienced RICO prosecutors in her office.
Financial records provided by Wade shows he and Willis vacationed together in Napa Valley, Florida and Aruba.
He also booked tickets on 2 cruises on his credit cards.
On Tuesday, Wade announced a divorce settlement with his ex-wife Joycelyn Wade.
The divorce settlement means he and Willis won’t have to testify in divorce hearings.
Until Friday, Willis did not confirm or deny the allegations that she and Wade were lovers.
