A misinformation campaign has gone viral on TikTik and other social media apps. TikTok influencers claim armed Venezuelan gangs have taken over (or “tooken” over) an apartment complex in Aurora, Colorado.
They claim the gangs forced Black people out of their apartments so they can move other Venezuelans in.
The TikTok influencers sound like they are reading from the same script.
They claim the armed gangs are “patrolling” the complex and collecting rent. Additionally, they say law enforcement and the federal government ignored the landlord’s plea for help.
Finally, the TikTok influencers urge Black people to vote for Trump to deport the Venezuelans back to their country.
The influencers also claim the news media won’t cover the story.
Actually, local news affiliate FOX 31 is covering the story. According to FOX 31, the city condemned the building as unsafe. The city gave the residents 6 days to move out before the utilities are shut off.
FOX 31 interviewed tenants who didn’t mention armed gangs taking over the complex.
