Mya Harrison, known to her fans as Mýa, has managed to stay relevant in an industry where trends come and go daily.
Mýa is as popular with Gen Z as she is with Gen X. The Grammy-winning R&B singer can go viral by posting a hot new photo or video on her social media page.
In a recent sit-down interview on Melyssa Ford,’s “Hot & Bothered” podcast, Mýa opened up about why she de-prioritized marriage and children in her life.
“It’s not even my focus, and it never has been,” she explained.
Mýa said her perception of marriage was impacted by her parents’ divorce and her father’s cheating ways.
“My mother is an independent thinker. I’ve witnessed a divorce between my parents. I’ve witnessed all kinds of things. My father is a very attractive man. I’ve witnessed a lot of things,” she said.
“As a little girl, the white wedding dress…I was very fearful of those things,” Mýa added. “I looked elsewhere and probably escaped too much in my work. It hasn’t been a focal point for me, and this is what it looks like.”
In 2020, Mýa made blog headlines when she “married” herself on a beach in the Seychelle Islands.
On Valentine’s Day 2020, Mýa posted a photo of her wedding dress. The image caused a stir online. Many fans rushed to identify her new “husband.”
“It was all about self-care, self-love and getting myself back after a toxic relationship,” Mýa said at the time. “It’s not about anything like ‘all men are bad’ or anything like that. It’s really about becoming your best self and making sure that you’re leveling up in all aspects of your life.”
Mýa previously dated rappers Jay-Z, The Game, and ex-NFL stars DeSean Jackson Larry Johnson.
