Sherri Shepherd regrets not having a backup plan before her daytime talk show was canceled earlier this year. In a candid video from South Africa, the comedienne said she was “blindsided” by her show’s cancellation and she didn’t have a backup plan.
“I didn’t really get to make plans because I thought it was coming back,” she explained. Sherri told a follower that she’s considering bringing her talk show back as a podcast.
Sherri said she loved doing her talk show and it was “a dream come true.” But she’s “disappointed” that it’s over. “I felt like I was just hitting my stride… and I felt that I was [really good at it].”
“It’s all good when it’s all good, but how do you respond when it’s not all good?” she said. “My faith says there is something else down the pipeline,” she continued.
Sherri’s talk show replaced “The Wendy Williams Show” and inherited her time slot in 2022.
Celebrity guests, including Sherri, took turns hosting Wendy’s show in the year that she was on leave for health-related issues. But it was clear that Wendy would not return. Rumors spread that Sherri would take her place.
“Since Wendy is still not available to host the show as she continues on her road to recovery, we believe it is best for our fans, stations and advertising partners to start making this transition now,” company co-presidents Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein said in a statement in 2022.
The show’s producer Debmar-Mercury announced Sherri would take Wendy’s place. They hoped Sherri would compete with Jennifer Hudson’s new talk show which launched that fall.
“OMG! I am so excited to have my dream come true and debut my very own talk show” Sherri said in a statement. She said her talk show would combine her love of “pop culture, talk, entertainment and comedy.”
However, Sherri didn’t plan ahead for the show’s cancellation because she believed her show would air for many years.
In February, it was announced that Sherri’s show was canceled after 4 seasons.
“This decision is driven by the evolving daytime television landscape and does not reflect on the strength of the show, its production – which has found strong creative momentum this season – or the incredibly talented Sherri Shepherd,” Debmar-Mercury said in a statement in February. “We believe in this show and in Sherri and intend to explore alternatives for it on other platforms.”
“Sherri” will continue to air its 4th season until the fall.
