Are the ladies on the Long Hair Care Forum delusional?

If you’re not familiar with the Long Hair Care Forum, click here. Some time ago I created a post informing them that their attempts to grow hair faster is futile because hair only grows at one speed – and they banned me!

I’ve been meaning to post about this for a while now but I never got around to it. They didn’t even give me a reason for banning me. I guess too much common sense shakes their confidence or something.

I still lurk over there and I shake my head at all the misinformation I see. Everybody knows that human hair only grows at a rate of half an inch per month. I don’t care what you put in your hair its not going to grow any faster. And some black women can’t grow hair at all due to genetics.

I really believe some of those chicks over there are delusional. For instance, the name of the forum is Long Hair Care – yet none of them can agree on what the definition of long hair is. Some say shoulder length, while others say arm pit length with still others say bra strap length.

I have included a photo I just took of my invisible fusions which takes about a day to put in – and for which I paid a grip I might add. The ladies on the long hair forum would consider my hair to be just above my shoulder blade. By their standards, my tresses are not long. Go figure.

I totally agree with you Sandra. I was a member of this board for 2yrs and these chicks are insane. In the beginning it was cool. I did get great hair tips and my hair did grow long because I learned proper maintenance and about products that did aide in improving your scalp and increasing growth.

However, at one point Bev (the site owner) and her webmaster Niko were sick as hell..they are holier than thou bible thumpers who are just in sane. I mean they will jump on you and criticize you..when its like the pot calling the kettle black because aint none of them huzzies innocent. I got banned as well because I was a radical on there — I went against their train of thought. Its really a modern day cult.

Bev who professed to be holier than thou, had some raunchy pics on the Internet in lingerie and it became a scandel on all the hair boards. She threatened to sue us.

Anyway, yeah they are crazy as hell.

Do we need to file this under “Who cares”, hair is just hair, whether you have fusion, glued-in, sew-in, lace front wig, or short-hair. ***If you need hair or want to change it up** You can always go to your local Beauty Supply they have a wide-range of weaves & wigs and oh yeah drawstring ponytails!!!!

Sandra your fusions from that angle looks pretty nice length.If people want that length of real hair it shouldn’t be hard to grow in a couple years with factors. Those hens on Long Hair forum are delusional , I’ve visited before and I didn’t enjoy the site, right along with LSA they are the biggest bunch of dumbasses, newbies get harassed and most of them never kno wht they are talking about unless it has to do with Jay and Bey. Since they banned you for a reality check then I say Let em live in their own liitle special world and pacify each other because at the end of the day their shh aint gonna grow nothing but a quarter of an inch a month IF THAT.

So u’re admitting that u’re a blog stalker? thats all that I got from this post. My hair was in the middle of my back (before I decided to chop it off) and I consider that to be long. Since black women usually dont have hair past their shoulders, some consider that to be long. If u have hair down ur back, then people assume u’re mixed.

What people don’t understand, and its the simplest thing is that everyone hair is different. People are so obsessed with growin their hair long, and can’t agree on whats long. My hair is a lil bit longer than than what you have in that pic sandra, and yet, i pay the regular price at the hair salon, and not the long hair price….(dats how dey price it), yet everyone, (my friends) would say my hair is long…..people have different ideas of what long is.

Also, yes hair grows an half inch every month, but when you go for a touch up (if u do dat kind of thing), you get a trim(if u do dat), so you take off a lil. *shrugs*

I don’t quite the obsession with long hair. So many would tell me, gurl your hair is so long, you got a nice head of hair, and i’m like….thanks. Its not something i obsess over. People ask me what i use, and i can barely tell them cuz the only time i give my hair time is when i unwrapp it in the morning……lol

Who gives a fluck about how long someone’s hair is? Really? It’s the 21st century and trust and believe there are other issues Black folks need to be worried about other than if their hair is past their shoulders, armpit or bra strap!

Not only that, they have a forum for people who are trying this product called Megat-Tek and Ovation. The Mega-Tek is for horses ( not the Mane ‘N Tail) but they say it can be used for humans as well and is expensive. They say at first you have some shedding then next it starts to grow (Hint Hint – It’s not for humans). I am a punk and I wouldn’t try that ish for nothing. They don’t know if that stuff will cause cancer or any other type of disease. I say to get long hair and it can be done over night is to add hair but without the glue. Some people will try anything and I mean anything including surgical procedures to get long hair. What a shame.

Forgot to add, one time the going thing on LHCF was the use of Monistat..(yes “the Monistat” for Ms. Kitty) for your hot spots that wouldnt grow. They tried it. You end up buying some of everything when you are on that board.

Some people, no matter what they do, will never have long hair. It can grow like crazy and then stop, it has to do with genetics. How long your hair can grow, is determined just like your eye color and height.

Yep .. I can’t go more than 5 days without washing my hair … I also go get a wash and set .. weekly (if your on a budget go to the beauty school 10.00) doobie it at night and you’ve got a head fulla healthy hair .. I also eat alot of almonds and drink alot of water my hair is shinier and bouncier…

hair growth is all genetic because some people hair grows very fast. i know my mother and grand mother had very fast grow hair.

they would cut it off and 3-4 months it would be back on their shoulders. i know a few yrs ago a perm took my mommy’s hair out and she did the tenny wennie afro and with then 6 months her hair was down her back. i know people would walk up to her and pull it or run there finger thru it to see if it was actually hers.

Well, on the average hair grows .5″ per month; however this varies per person. Aside from topical remedies, hair growth is mostly determined by internal health: nutrition, exercise…things of that nature. Some people do indeed grow more, or less, than .5″ of hair per month. So, there is no ‘one rate’ that hair grows, there is an average rate that human hair grows and that is .5″ per month.

As far as the statement suggesting that most women who have afro-textured hair, especially the tightest of coils/curls, have hair that doesn’t grow…that’s a myth. Afro-textured hair does grow.

Hair growth and length retention are two different things. Hair grows from the root. Once it grows above the skin surface Afro-textured hair is pre-dispositioned to high levels breakage without ‘proper care’. This is because, as you may already know, the way the hair follicle is shaped does not allow it to capture moisture as well as looser hair textures.

But, in this day, there are so many remedies/tricks/tools/products/advice/knowledge available were a person can find a resolution to this for their specific hair texture – even in it’s natural state. That’s what forums like LHCF.com are there for. There is no exact science to Afro-textured hair care. Since hair texture varies per person, even within families (siblings) remedies vary per person, the resolution to hair dryness, breakage, and damage caused by chemical styling (including heat) will also vary per person.

So the short length isn’t coming from lack of growth from the root, but from the breakage. There’s a difference from what your suggesting which is that most women with Afro-textured hair have some form of alopecia; And that this condition, by default, comes with having the tighter hair textures. That’s incorrect. People of any hair texture can experience alopecia or low rates of hair growth (from the root).

Forums like “Long Hair Care” leave things objective. Finding the right solution for you is a trial and error sort of thing. But it’s obvious that the ladies who participate in that forum have found remedies that work for them and simply share them with others. You use the advice at your own discretion knowing that what works for some one else won’t necessarily work for you.

That’s why they deleted your comment IMO. They’re aimed at maintaining a positive forum free of stigmas and negative stereotypes regarding our hair; encouraging women to find these solutions – not discourage them. There’s enough discouragement regarding our hair texture as it is.

Users of forums like LCHF.com are far from delusional – IMO. There are several sites, thank God, that are there to help dispel all the bad information we’ve learned over generations (via society) regarding the capabilities of our hair texture(s).

And, generally any length between the shoulders and mid-back is considered mid-length hair. In all my years going to the salon, I notice stylist judge length based on how much they want to make off the time they’ll spend doing your hair. I remember being charged for having long hair, when my hair was only mid-length (relaxer). That was because it was thick and took a long time to dry and style; and the stylist generally would service women with short hair only.

I’m very confused as to why BLACK women are going out in a limb to attack other black women for doing something that harms who? None of us have EVER caught cancer from any of our techniques. If anything, WE had members that caught serious alopecia from techniques that these bootleg kitchen-beauticians buying booths in Bonquefa’s spot or that fluff ass fusion you’re sporting (which will explain why in the photo of you you’re two strands of hair are looking so rick-raggedy).
Please don’t front like some of you didn’t get your “my hair just grew” techniques from LHCF and BHM members. You’re full of shit. You know good damn well your hair was two shots to the wind had you not lurked on the board and drank some damn water or deep condition.

Genetics have very little to do with hair growth, especially where it relates to black women FACT: Most forms of hair loss in black women from from braids, weaves and relaxers. Black women just want to believe that their hair cannot grow so they can sit back and be lazy about their own beauty.

Funny everytime I turn around LHCF’s name is being mentioned, but no one ever talks about NaturallyCurly.com, Long Hair Community, or the other WHITE hair sites and forums (yes, they existed before we ever do).

Tiny up in here ho’ing ’til mornin’ with T.I. and you get on Usher for taking Tameka down the isle. White man marries a black women and you talking mad shit about their babies. Its as if you don’t want anything close to decent for women of color.

I will say this, I have been to the site, but never joined. I think that it gave great tips on hair care. However, I have never USED any of the tips because fortunately for me, I have a wonderful stylist who rarely uses heat on my hair. That is the key. Stop using so much heat on your hair. Protein treatments, regular six week trims and roller sets will do wonders not only for your lenghth, but what is most important, the health of your hair. Not to mention, eating properly and drinking lots of water attributes to your scalps condition. I have always had compliments on my hair and not just because it is considered to be long, but more because people think I have on a wig due to its sheen, bounce and thickness. Sandra, if you mention one more time how much you pay for you fusion, I am going to scream. Still love you though

Black people are obsessed with long hair. It’s ridiculous! Although I am proud of my hair’s appearance and length, the best thing about it to me is not having to fight with it too much. And MEN are the worst!! It irks me how when I wear my hair curly/wavy the women LOVE it, but when I straighten it out (every once in a blue moon), I HAVE TO BEAT THE MEN OFF WITH A STICK!! Shyt, the women too for that matter! And I’m straight, BTW. LOL! Everybody wants to put their hands in it, then pull it to see how long it actually is when it’s curly…I’ll never forget one day when I was wearing my hair straight, one of the higher ups at my workplace came up, put his hand through my hair, and told me he was “PROUD” of me!! Like WTF??!!

Good point about hair breakage. Sites like LHCF and Healthy Textures Hair Forum are good for people who want to learn more about taking care of their hair. I prefer Healthy Textures. I never post there but I love learning about different products.

COSIGN!! My hair really only started gaining length when I stopped putting heat on it. I still relax it though, way too thick to deal with without one, given my patience level! =) I basically just grew out a short texturized style.

I can honestly say I’ve been blessed in this department. Not so much with the long hair, but my hair is thick and healthy. Its also grows the average amount. However I did give myself a bad perm Feb 2006. Cut it up to the nape of my neck April 2006 and it has fully grown back.

What I’m surprised by is the amount of women who can not take care of there own hair. I have friends who go to the hairdresser reg. because they have to. They don’t no know to wash, blow-dry and style there hair properly.

But as a kid that was the first think I learned was how to use curling iron, blow dryer and wash and condition my hair properly. But the key thing is having your silk pillow case and wearing your satin bonnet to bed regularly. A lot of the damage comes at night, hair gets dry and brittle and loses moisture and breaks. IMO

You are implying that hair breaks off at the root and that is not true unless something else is going on. Hair splits at the ends and travels along the shaft. The splitting makes one strand become two thin strands that makes it easier for the hair to break when combed or brushed. Also, hair sheds daily and that is natural. Some people shed more than others and a lot of factors goes into that like diet, stress and hydration. The most obvious cause of hair breakage is not getting your ends trimmed after touch ups or coloring. Black women are notorious for that. My ends are trimmed every single time I go to the hair dresser. That is the key to healthy hair. That and water, water, WATER!

I think the point she was making is to prevent your hair from becoming damaged. Your hair will continue to grow from the roots, but you won’t see any growth if your ends are constantly being damaged and split from external factors. Not only will you not see any length, but it won’t look healthy. Hair doesn’t have to constantly have split/damaged ends.

LOL!!! Girl, that is EXACTLY what happens to me on a daily basis. It IS a shame…all I have to do to have men all over me is wear my hair straight…maybe toss it around a lil bit! LOL!! =) I admit, it does look nice when it’s staight, BUT it annoys me when the men around here totally ignore me any other day. Then as soon as I let it curl up again, they get mad (the women do too), and it’s back to the drought.

I have people at my job who ask me at least once a week when I’m gonna straighten it again! I only do it a couple times a year, and not at all during the summer. It is just too much work to keep it straight, ‘specially in this humid GA weather!! I go through all that trouble to straighten it, then the slightest bit of moisture, and it’s tryin to wave up with a vengeance!! Plus I have a pet peeve about the seeamingly constant shedding I get when it’s straight…hair on my clothes, in the bathroom, etc. UGH!!! =)

Before I went natural, I would have ignored a hair post.

BUT, I started going natural amost 2 years ago, and I’m fully natural now. I love it. All I do is wash my hair with conditioner, rinse it out, shake it, and put various moisterizing curly hair products in (not at the same time; I’m experimenting with different products to see which is the best at keeping my curls pretty). I did straighten it this weekend for the first time in months and it had grown longer and looked VERY healthy. But hell, all that hair on my neck was hot and heavy. So I’m curly and light again today.

All I do is drink water, eat right, and wash and go. Life’s beautiful. Men still holla with the curls, but I do think more hollered when it was straight. My husband claims to love the curls, but he DID smile extra hard when I straightened it this weekend. LOL I love my own hair though. I think that we are really blessed to have hair that we can leave curly, straighten, or add extensions to. I’ve never loved myself more than I do with this nappy/curly hair though. I just feel special to have such hair with “character”.

I’m not saying that hair breaks at the root, i’m saying that the lack of hair length retention isn’t because the hair won’t grow from the root. I never stated that the hair breaks from the root.

I’m just saying that Afro-textured hair grows, the lack of length is not because it won’t grow naturally, but because of breakage.

And if the hair isn’t growing from the scalp/root, it’s not that we were born that way (the most of us humans are not), it’s because of the damage caused by the excessive or improper application of styling methods (fusion, braids, weaves, wigs, relaxers, heat) that bring about alopecia (tension, friction, chemical…).

We’re not born with those types of alopecia. But even that can be resolved.

Most black women have been obsessed with their hair ever since Madam C. J. Walker invented “Kink no mo”, i.e. the perm, decades and decades ago. Most of us will never wear our hair in it’s natural state, period. Mind you, I said “most” not all. In our natural state, i.e. dreads, it will usually grow down ones back, without chemicals, without heat, without excesses dying. I wish one day we can all embrace our natural states and love one another nappy or straight, light-skinned-ed or dark-skinned-ed. After all, to many white Americans, we are all the n(word) Peace.

I am a little over 1 year being natural.. And I actually think that more women of African descent are making the move. There are some many beneficial reasons to do so that out weight not doing so, IMO. We’re going to have to be the one’s to go out in society and dispell all the negative stigma and innuendo regarding our natural hair textures. I’m not doggin’ anyone who wears their hair straighten, via chemicals…I just feel that many forfeit hair and scalp hair for length.

The hair will grow. Find the right remedy/technique, take care of yourself, be patient, quit relying solely on the knowledge of conventional stylists, and quit abusing your hair.

I thought about dreading it when I first started growin it out, but then if I wanted to straighten it out again one day, I’d have to cut it off and start all over again! I kept it short for the longest, and it was soooo cute! =) But now that I’ve gone through the whole growing out process I can’t see cutting it off again. HOWEVER…every time I see a hot short cut…I get the urge!! =)

Well, if you don’t get coloring, heat or otherwise chemically altering the state of your hair it wouldn’t be prone to breakage. I don’t have split ends and have not had one trim since by Big Cut because I don’t put any heat, dye, texturizers, etc… in my hair.

I’ve never heard of the fusion thing, but your hair looks real. Seems like the technique should have substituted lace fronts for celebs who can afford it. It looks far more natural. You need to post your stylist’s contact info in the hopes that Trina, Beyonce, Naomi, Tyra, etc. will see it.

As for long hair I guess it’s great if they really give good tips on how the keep your hair healthy, but how did a topic like long hair get so serious that they need to be banning people? Sounds silly to me.

ok…change of subject, but someone mentioned it…how do I apply NO heat on my hair but get it straight? I have naturally curly hair, used to be down to my bra, but now it’s short (kinda Rhi Rhi/Posh-ish) so I flat iron it DAILY. I want it to grow out again, but the curls aren’t really working when it’s this short! EEK!

This is a very old post. But if you had been on LHCF for any length of the time you would have realised that the major focus is on RETENTION, not increasing your growth rate. Sure the vitamin and growth aids that are sometimes discussed, are aimed at increasing your growth rate (and by the way, yes, they can work). But the advice about protein-moisture balance, deep conditioning, moisturising, protective styles, low manipulation, stretching relaxers, are all aimed at helping you to retain the hair you do grow, which is what is needed for you to eventually get longer hair. It’s all a matter of what you focus on. As they say in my country – “Eat the meat and spit out the bones”. So, benefit from what is useful to you, and leave whatever doesn’t agree with you. LHCF definitely helped me and many other ladies to grow our hair to unforeseen lengths. Nowadays, youtube can provide much that info, but back, say 7 or 8 years ago, LHCF was really useful.

Years ago LHCF would temporarily block me because I disagreed too much with the other members in the other than hair discussion boards.
I grew tired of it and cancelled my membership.
