Why Soulja Boy Tell ’em is a Genius

Thanks to V-103’s Greg Street, I now know that Soulja Boy’s track “Turn My Swag On” is #1 in New York right now even though it was released 10 months ago. And look who jumped on the remix: Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne, Fabolous, Jim Jones, Maino & Jadakiss!

How did this happen right under our noses when we all wrote Soulja Bwah off as a one-hit wonder? Let Greg Street tell you:

Soulja Boy made a crazy record. He not even rappin’ on the song. The label fucked up because he made that song about 10 months ago — way before “Birdwalk”. How the fuck these labels keep signing artists that’s already hot & then try to convert the formula [the artist] created? If you don’t sign a artist & develop the artist [or] if the artist comes with the master plan: let the artist, sub label, production company or whoever do what the fuck they do. I showed Outkast how to sell 15 million without doing one show or tour with the double solo cd. If they hadn’t put those albums together like I told ’em to, they would’ve gone through what they’re going through right now. Back to Soulja Boy, it is what it is. The kids love him & a lot of you 21 & up people were Superman’n last year. 4 months ago everybody said he was a one hit wonder. Now he got 2 songs in the Top 10 from an album that only soild 46,000 1st week.

The label shouldve known these records were hot. They spent all the money on Keyshia Cole & hardly none on Soulja Boy. Now look at that picture. Keyshia is hot — don’t get me wrong — but Soulja Boy has 2 songs in Top 10 Urban & 2 on the Rhythmic charts as well. These labels are listening & puttin’ their trust & money in the wrong people. You can say what you want about Soulja Boy & some of these artists the industry & critics talk down on. Just remember & know the difference between art & science. Like what you like & appreciate it, but you don’t have to hate on the next person for their talent. Bill Gates went with software when everybody else went with hardware. The major labels let Apple set up iTunes & become the biggest distributor of music. Why didn’t the labels build their own music download sites? Talk shit about that! Not a fuckin’ 17-year-old kid who created a 7-million people fan base from his bedroom in Batesfield, MS.

And what Greg is not saying is that this boy is VERY smart, he gets most of the money from his sells and all the money from his ringtones so homeboy is pocketing his own money and he’s YOUNG and SMART. Greg Street and ColliPark schooled this boy VERY,VERY well.

i dont like soulja boy but i do like that song. the beat is catchy as hell. of course those old heads would get on a remix. that beat is hot. i bet they are mad they didnt get that beat first. they play that song all the time up here now. its getting a little annoying but it is what it is

There is a Very Big Difference in “Quality over Quantity”. It’s a business and a business is solely about money. However when you put artistry into it then it becomes tricky.

McDonald’s probably outsells anybody in food, but is it good? healthy?. Nope, actually it can kill you if you eat a whole bunch of it. That is how I see it. Soulja Boy is McDonalds, artists like A Keys, Prince, etc. are Fresh home cooked meals with nutrional value.

Just because it sells doesn’t mean it is good. I bet you if I come out with a dumb ass song and but some porn behind me, it wil sell like crazy. People are simple, entertainment is really simple. Majority of people want to get cheap thrills that doesn’t require much thinking or analysis. So that’s why the simple shit always works. Unfortunately if there is no balance eventually it will backfire. Look what happened to all the thug sh!t, we had an era where everybody wants to be hardest gangsta but now the same katz are making pop music. Lady GaGa featuring Gorilla Zoe?????

I didn’t give him much credit until I did my research on that Bow Wow post, and now I have no choice but to give this boy props….both cd’s were released on Soulja Boy’s sub label, and he produced 80% of his own songs….this lil dude is making so much bread….NO WONDER HE ACTS LIKE A NICCA DAT AIN NEVA HAD SHYT. Bow Wow been in the game all this time, and he never made those type of moves…he just look LOST. How you let this man come in the game, make stupid shyt, and take all your money. Its like, what the hell would a scream tour be without Soulja Boy…..Bow Wow can’t even go on tour with out this man, NOT IF HE WANTS SOME MONEY!!

^^This is all I’ve been trying to tell people about artists like Souljah Boy and many others. There are so many forms of expression in the music industry, and like other forms of art, everyone isn’t going to like everything. Does that mean it’s garbage? Not necessarily. He’s smart as heck.

The way he went about getting his fortune, fame, and expressing his talent is admirable. I may not care for every SB song (I happen to like “Turn My Swag On” – it’s different), but for every person who doesn’t like him, he probably has 10 more who do.

I applaud the young man for getting out here and living his dream of being an artist – he could have turned out much worse. As long as he isn’t out here stealing and killing, and adding to the prison numbers (please don’t make me eat that statement Souljah Boy – keep acting like you got some sense!!)he’s alright w/ me. I can always turn the station when it becomes too much.

My sons both like and are inspired by the beats. So he’s reaching and inspiring these young’uns to do their OWN and not to depend on a deal or someone to make you into an artist.

I pray that my sons can live their dreams at a young age.

@Krysi J…me too!!! I mean after I saw his response to Ice Tea I thought he was VERY mature and handled himself well for his age. But after seeing his bow wow response he convinced me even more that he is an intelligent young man. Can’t hate on him for his knowledge and business skills. I used to couldn’t stand him either but I’m used to him now so I find myself singing his songs when they are on. LOL.

I just wish I had stayed my good self in Memphis, and I probably would have “Turned My Swag On” by now my dern self! My parents moved North when I was in middle school, and I totally agree with PAGESINADIARY – there’s beats galore, there’s talent galore, and beautiful people galore. Not just superficial beauty either – the South has a way of inspiring you…there’s nothing like it.

I’m in Michigan and on the music scene(somewhat blah)it is just too much and not enough.
