New Bill Gives Obama ‘Emergency’ Control Over The Internet

A new bill being drafted behind closed doors will give absolute power to Obama to disconnect any private sector computer networks if he deems them a threat to cybersecurity.
In fact, the requirements in the bill giving Obama power to disconnect networks from the Internet are deliberately vague. The 55-page bill drafted by aides to Sen. Jay Rockefeller (a Democrat from W. Virginia) gives Obama the power to seize control of private sector networks and “declare a cybersecurity emergency” relating to “non-governmental” computer networks.
Despite the fact those networks are not connected to — and therefore pose no threat to government systems, Obama will still have the power to disrupt the networks to do whatever is necessary to respond to the perceived threat.
The new version of the bill includes a federal certification program for “cybersecurity professionals,” and a requirement that certain private sector companies deemed to be critical will undergo “periodic mapping” and those companies “shall share” requested information with the federal government. Those companies would then be under the control of those “cybersecurity professionals” who answer to Obama.
Translation: If your company is deemed “critical,” a new set of regulations kick in involving who you can hire, what information you must disclose, and when the government would exercise control over your computers or network. Source
Understandably, the implications behind that language is a cause for concern to telecommunications companies like Verizon and Nortel, among others. “I think the redraft, while improved, remains troubling due to its vagueness,” said Larry Clinton, president of the Internet Security Alliance, which represents the telecommunications companies. “It is unclear what authority Sen. Rockefeller thinks is necessary over the private sector. Unless this is clarified, we cannot properly analyze, let alone support the bill.”
Michael Jackson Autopsy Report Released

The L.A. County coroner, in typical Hollywood dramatic fashion, has finally released the cause of Michael Jackson’s death. The actual report itself has still not been released, but the cause of death is due to an overdose of the sedative Propofol used in the induction of anesthesia, and acute benzodiapine intoxication, including Valium, Ativan and other prescription drugs found in Jackson’s system. The manner of death is ruled a homicide. So far there have been no arrests made, but Jackson’s personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray is considered a suspect.
From TMZ.com:
The L.A. County Coroner has just officially announced the cause of Michael Jackson’s death — Acute Propofol intoxication.
The report says “other conditions contributing to death: Benzodiazepine effect.” Benzodiazepines are a group of drugs (see below) used to treat anxiety and insomnia.
The manner of death is ruled: “HOMICIDE.”
The Coroner did not release the full autopsy report — just a press notice. It goes on:
The drugs PROPOFOL and LORAZEPAM (Ativan) were found to be the primary drugs responsible for Mr. Jackson’s death.
Other drugs detected were: Midazolam (Versed), Diazepam (Valium), Lidocaine (topical anesthetic) and Ephedrine (used to treat hypotension associated with anesthesia).
The final Coroner’s report, including the toxicology report, will remain on security hold, per the LAPD.
Kim Kardashian Without Makeup

TV personality Kim Kardashian was spotted outside the BodyFactory juice bar after an early morning workout at a gym in Los Angeles, California today. Apparently, Kim never bothered to put her face on after her workout even though she knew the paparazzi were prowling around. That’s because she’s an attention whore — and anything she can do to bring attention to herself, she’ll happily do it.

FanMAIL: Obama – “My Kennebunkport is the South Side of Chicago”

Loyal reader Sydney writes:
Sandra, when I read the “fanmail” on your site this afternoon, I was reminded of something Obama said last year – “My Kennebunkport is on the South Side of Chicago.”
It’s kind of funny reading the Huffington Post article that was from [click], where they start off by saying “When President-elect Barack Obama heads home for a break from the White House, he won’t go to a sprawling ranch or private seaside compound.” But it appears he’s done just that!
