The Young Turks Weigh In On the Baby Wigs Controversy
Our precious little Lacefront Baby is becoming a legend in her own time. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, co-hosts of the popular Young Turks radio show, tackle the issue of wigs on a baby.
They seem to agree with me that lacefront wigs (made popular by Beyonce) look hideous on our beautiful black women and children. “The baby is cute but the wig is not. It’s freaking me out,” declares Cenk.
Thanks to loyal reader, and blogger Gina (What About Our Daughters) for the video link!

There should be a ban on baby wigs. That’s ridiculous. if a grown woman wants to wear a lacefront then so be it but they shouldnt’t be made for babies
Not really feeling the baby being called a creature.
So this is really widespread? I was under the impression that it was just a few random
that were doing this to their children. SHM
I think that (bad)Lace fronts should not come in 2010…….(look in the Lil wayne post we made a list of things that should stay in 2009)
Poor baby will have no edges by the time she in 2 if her mother continues with this behaviour…….I think the baby should just go bald her hair will eventually grow in………….
Which loyal readers baby is this do they have an account to post on here………..If so can they defend this action with the “This is my child and I will do what I please/my child will wear things that I wear”
*SMH* their child should be taken away from them…..this is child abuse……
Okay I am finished my rant……..
Does Nancy Grace know about this? She’d chew the parent(s) ass for this ish right here!
@Tryna, oh yes. Nancy would slay those fools.
I have despaired at my niece who since she turned 12 has been in weaves! She is 18 now and she knows I will never sew that thing on her, I will gladly cornrow or braid her hair but I draw the line at the long flowing blond weaves she wants!!!
It’s things like this that make little black girls grow up wanting to be white. We even buy them white dolls so they can play with the hair.
Then we are the first to cry give us ‘black empowerment’ ‘black pride’ when we are busy grooming little ‘Tigers’ at home !
This is shameful. When I first saw this picture, I thought, “No, this is just a joke.” I can’t believe someone would be this crazy to put a wig on a child. Bald babies are adorable and they’ll grow their hair when it’s time. Leave the babies out of this wig mess.
I confess as an adult i have dont the long flowing weave thing, but mostly to grow out my own hair. however…i dont think its a good idea on babies. lace front wigs on babies is just as bad a micros on infants…yes,
do that too
**I have done the long flowing weave thing,**
@Thando-I will have to disagree with you on the whole white dolls thing….I grew up playing with Barbie and I wanted to fix her hair/dress her up but it never made me want to be white(I could of had a black doll and I would have played in her hair/dress her up also)……and I never wanted to be white……I think that has to deal with a persons self esteem and what their parents teach them about self worth…..
@ Q I have seen the mircos on children under a year!
I think some people are insecure about how their babies look and that’s way they do that to them. I think all babies are beautiful with or without a full head of hair. I have 2 baby girls that came out with alot of hair (already able to put in sectioned ponytails). These people need to realize that it’s not the babies fault..throw a headband on them and keep it moving. Accept the fact that your baby is a baby. This is ridiculous!
oops typing too fast…on the second line i meant the word why not way.
@ Missy I had mostly white barbies & I agree w/ Thando. I never wanted to be white, BUT until I learned to just be comfortable in my own skin, one of my “If I had three wishes…” was to have “pretty eyes & long pretty hair” Mind you, my hair is MAD THICK & COARSE. As a child it was really long (but it wasn’t “good hair”)
You ever seen Whoopi’s comedy where she portray’s a lil black girl wishing she was white? Or that lady who usta be on In Living Color & she plays the mom on That’s So Raven? Keyma or something like that. Don’t feel like googling her. Even Taraji talked about watchin’ Soul Train as a child pretending to be that lady with hte long ass hair. She was like, “I put my white t-shirt on my head!” I was like ME TOO!
I was always cool with being black. I
MY PEOPLE even when we ak-a-fool. But I did envy some “white things” as a child.
@ Tasha I agree whole heartedly about the parents being insecure. I have two baby girls and knowing what I know now I will never perm their hair. It’s all about how a parent validates a child. I have always had white and black barbies. This has not made me want to be white at all. My mother told me that I was beautiful every chance that she got. My two year old pulled her hair out and I had to cut it down to a short fro. I got so much flack from family. I cut mines just like hers and now her hair and mines is very healthy. My 3 year old has very healthy hair also. It’s a mind thing and these parents don’t have much of one. That is all…
And I think we all have put something on our heads pretending that we had long hair, not necessarily white hair. I favored pillow cases.
@ Tasha – I don’t have a issue with whether or not a baby has hair or not…but I can’t cosign that “all babies are beautiful.” IDK about you, but I’ve seem some babies where all I can say is, “Aww, look at the baby.”
We’ve had an issue lately in our family w/ ppl talkin’ about other ppl’s kids. I feel like this, looks change all the time. Some “cute kids” grow up to be UGLY ADULTS, and some kids who are aesthetically challenged blossom into some REAL EYE CANDY! I say just work w/ what you have cause an attractive attitude will take you further than outer beauty.

Obviously you’ve never broken the teeth of any combs in your baby’s hair?
@tryna-I use to put the t-shirt on my head also…….but I never wanted to be white(I just wanted a weave ponytail..& I wanted whip action like Regine off of living single)…..I knew when I was young I thought all white girls had long hair…(I soon grew to realize they wear hair weaves also). But I never really saw Barbie as a white doll to me she was just a doll, color had nothing to do with it for me…….that is why I ended my statement with “I think that has to deal with a persons self esteem and what their parents teach them about self worth”…….I agree with what @Thando is saying but the white doll thing doesn’t apply to everyone……

Pa-phuckin-thetic. Point. Blank. Period. If she would leave her child’s hair alone, it’d probably grow beyond imagination. Dumb black females
Congrats on the publicity Sandra!!!
@ missy
Mmmm hmmmm, cause I always felt that if I was given a choice in dolls I would have sho nuff picked black dolls. Actually my “babydolls” were black…only my barbies weren’t. I just went to wikipedia:
“Colored Francie” made her debut in 1967, and she is sometimes described as the first African American Barbie doll. However, she was produced using the existing head molds for the white Francie doll and lacked African characteristics other than a dark skin. The first African American doll in the Barbie range is usually regarded as Christie, who made her debut in 1968.[16][17] Black Barbie was launched in 1980 but still had white features.
I did start getting black Barbies around the time I was 8yrs…which coincides with the timeline (not the ‘67/’68 Barbies, the 80’s model)

How about being AT the shop & having the comb broke off in ya head!??? I was soooooooooo embarrassed!
I had to change my gravatar for this post. I put a pic of my daughter up when she was a month old with a head full of hair. Even if she was bald I wouldn’t put a wig on her that’s insane. Tell me this, what would the child think when they get older about their folks putting lace front wigs on them n ish? Exactly, that child would probably grow up to be insecure about their looks. People we got to do better! We got to teach these children to accept themselves for who they are.
@gypsyeyes- I never pretended to have that kind of hair. I was like you I played with white and black dolls but mainly white. I have really good hair. It’s not as fine as my sisters which she has hair exactly like Alicia Keys curly and all but it’s good, healthy and long enough for me not to put weave in it. My sis and I are are total opposites. She keep weave and all that in her hair cuz she don’t know what to do with all that good hair. And I keep weave out and stay hittin up the hair salon to keep my head right and healthy.
@missy-
LOL! Girl I was trying to be nice. Like I said I have two baby girls wit a head full of hair but I didn’t want to rub it in too much. I still think that people shouldn’t do that to their child tho no matter how they look. I also think that it’ll bring more attention to them
Sorry missy I meant to direct my comment #26 @ comment #18. Yall posting really quick.
@ Tasha, “Aww look at the CUTE baby!”
(I really shouldnt have made that statement tho…cause sometimes I do just say “Aww look at the baby” and there’s nothing wrong with the baby. Now if don’t add cute when talkin’ about somebody’s gravi, they gon think I’m being funny!)
Tasha, did you take that pic of her today? Her look is saying: “Why you standin’ over me with that camera in my face?”
@trynabme- I don’t see the gravi pic of my baby yet. But naw that pic is 3 mos old she’s 4 mos now wit way more hair.

*********************************************************
I’m not saying that it’s not coarse hair(one of them has really soft hair). I had a perm when I was 2 Y/O. My mom said that my hair was extremely coarse. *notice how I don’t use the word nappy.* I just want them to have the choice when they get older to perm or stay natural. I didn’t have the choice. I was hasty with my 15 Y/O and she wants me to be sure to give the babies the option. She wants natural hair now.
I must admit though I have broken a lot of combs because my mom stopped perming me for a while in my younger years.
@gypsyeyes-Your mama permed your hair when you were 2……..dang that is young………me and my sis had thick coarse hair but my mom just dealt with it…..we got our hair straighten at 9 or ten yrs old…..& we got a perm @ 12 but we still use to get it straighten…..and my mom would perm it every so often(like 3 times out of the whole year i got a perm)……
The babies don’t even look right with that crap on their heads. What parent in their right mind would want to do that?
I know that sounds abusive, she was a great mom but didn’t know what to do with my hair.My aunts would do it on the occasion that we were in CT (we lived in Mass). That helped but she said it was just a temp fix. I have had my hair permed all my adult life and just this year went natural. I don’t plan on breaking any combs, Sandra. Thanks
Well I’ll be dayumed! You really do learn something new every-damned-day! gypsyeyes, when you said, “extremely coarse. *notice how I don’t use the word nappy.*” I swear I thought, “Why does she think the two are synonymous?”
I always assumed coarse hair had to do with the thickness of the individual hair strand and that thick hair had more to do with the number of hairs on your head. For instance this chic who usta to braid me & my BFF would marvel at how there were no “empty spaces” in our head. She usta say, “Yall got hair growing out of every SINGLE plug in yall heads!
Which is why I say my hair is thick & coarse. I let google be my friend & found that coarse is “of ordinary or inferior quality or value; harsh, raucous or rough in tone”
I ain’t referring to my hair as coarse no more….I’d rather just say nappy!
I am “Nappily Ever After”, because my hair is course, thick and use to break the teeth in a comb. I now get a “Kiddie Relaxer”, every other year.
I say coarse because so many equate nappy with being a negative thing. As soon as we stop thinking that nappy is negative and embrace our roots than we will be fine. To me “good hair” is hair that can be combed. My hair is “nappy” as all Hail. But it is “good hair” cause I have it to comb. I like to take my lemons and make lemonade.
@tryna-I’ll just refer to my hair as thick………then no more coarse
for me…….But I thought when your hair is coarse it was hard to manage…… and comb threw….
No more coarse for me my hair has always been shiny from before I got a perm and it will be shiny after I stop getting perms….
I see Dereon came out with there prototype weaves early because I see everyone rocking it but they have the one with the extra glue………I heard they have the moisturized one coming in 2010(like I stated in another post)……… we know Bey like ther lace fronts dry…….but I hope they come out with the moisturized lace fronts ASAP because the glue showing is so not classy…….
This was all inspired by this chick I had seen she had a lace front on she is about 14…15 and I could see all her glue….Oh and I saw a pregnant chick with a lace front and her glue was showing also *ponders* if they have the same hair stylists*ponder*…..I couldn’t come to…….I hope these people know lace fronts jack up your edges……
Cmon, when I first saw this I knew it was a joke. Ppl are killing me thinking a baby is being carried around with an effin wig on. Nobody is that stupid. The joke is obvious. Move on.
OK @ Missy and trynabeme I will use Nappy.

Not trying to start shyt or anything so put down the guns, but what EXACTLY is good hair? To me, this is a term that self hating black folks used or use to describe the kind of hair that bi or multi-racial people have, that they want. Correct me if I’m worng, but I have just never liked that term, “good hair”. Just because your hair is thick/ coarse does not mean it is “bad hair”. It is what it is. To me there is no such thing as good or bad hair, just different textures. JMO. Again, there were no

Whitney and Sandra is making me like Miss Little Sunshine, Rih. I am still not going to buy her CD, but I will give her a chance and not change the radio station in my car. I am watching “Tough Love 2″ and decided that I should be nice and give Rih her props, she is pretty and her voice is just one that has to grow on you. I am trying to be nicer before 2010 gets here. Is it working? I said something nice.

OK, I just moved back to CT from Atlanta because I couldn’t find a job. I’m divorced with 4 children 17, 15, 3 and 2. I have artists that I like but it’s no one that Sandra will ever report on so I’m clear with that so have at it ladies. I’m an Aries and I like long walks on the beach
I hope that is good enough.
@gypsy yes it is thanks for sharing. I have gfriends who are orignally from CT that live here in the A. Another friend of mine had to move back home to Cleveland cause she couldnt find a job here in the A she has 3 kids had been out of work for over 6mths. Good luck on your search in CT. I use to want 4 kids way back in the day but I will be on older mother so I will settle for a boy n girl.

Your bio is cute and funny. I am a Cancer, 42 and married(12 yrs) a blind date set up by my BFF. I have a 24 yr old(engaged to be married in June and just finished her Masters) I have a 22 yr old son(the one making me “Grannie Annie) and a 20 yr old daughter who changed her major from Pre Med to ECE(Early Childhood Education). My goal for my last born is for her to get her degree and I open a Day Care Center and she is the head teacher. Kids are drawn to us for some strange reason. You know you are a good person if someones kid or pet has the sense to love you,and they really do adopt us, we don’t adopt them. My kids are out shopping now for Christmas Presents for the pets and kids who adopted my family. I just hope I gave them enough money.
@Anna-you watching tough love 2 ……..I already watched it for today …were you shocked by Tina being a mistress to a married man & kanisha using a butcher knife on the her ex’s tires..
@lovely-I am cutting up again….I have been rude this weekend…..& for that I will say I have to get it out of my system before 2010……..

Everyone on the show was shocked. Miss goodie too shoes has baggage. Kanisha (I slashed the tires on your car). Women need to get it together and leave these sorry azz men and quit letting them make us mad and define our future. I have a good husband and when I met him, I did tell him that “you will get the best of me and you will get the worst of me”. He did not back down. I am moody and can be “bit*hy” but my hubby is still here because he was fore warned about my past dealings with MFs.
I missed a lot this weekend…IDK about the Knowles releasing a statement, Bow Wow firing his “people” on twitter, Katt Williams gettin’ sued.

Her fiance’ is from a different State and they came to the conclusion that they will marry at her “home chuch”. When my kids were little, I took them to “my church/hubbys church”. What channel are you watching @ Daisy? Robin Thicke is on BET singing his Sex Therapy song ***swoons****

I would also finally SPLURGE and get me some CLs red bottom shoes

@Daisy and Anna- Thanks.I was watching the Soul Train Awards again only for the Raheem DeVaugn and Luda performance. I swear that was the best thing about that show(IMO). I really enjoyed that old school feel. I really love Neo-Soul and jazz that is why I know that Sandra or no one else will step on anyone’s toes that I stan for.
I think that I must go to sleep because I must car pool in the morning. Being a single mom is a job in itself, looking for a job is a job. Is it Friday yet? I’m already tired thinking about what I have to do. I have to pick my son up from Laguardia tomorrow night at 11:40pm. He still lives in the “A” with the Grandparents and he’s coming in for Christmas break, I hope that his flight doesn’t get delayed. Please pray that it doesn’t, I can’t wait to see my baby.
@gypsy I love neo soul artist as well!
@ Daisy
My dad went to the Iraq war for the 3rd and last time 2 years ago. Before he went he was the most hands on father, genuine sweet guy, I swear I was looking for a man like my father. He came back from war the most hard, distraught, cold eyed person I’ve ever seen. He’s not the same and he got honorably discharged because he could no longer concentrate on his job. Now he just walks around the house talking to make believe soldiers. He is calling these soldiers name and I believe they are dead. He is just really sad. I can’t bare to watch him like this anymore.

Sandra I know that I’m new here but I have been lurking for years. What are you doing up and on here this time of night with us and all of our random talking? @Ms.kaylamomma@I start classes for nursing 1/11/10. Wish me luck. Its been a long time since I’ve been in school.

Welcome to you. Good luck tomorrow. I know those sweeties can’t wait until Friday.
@Mskay I am sorry to hear that. Has he sought counseling. My father and sister both work at the VA hospital they see it all as well. Very sad how our soldiers are treated or lack thereof once they return
Robin was not supposed to perform his new song at the award show.He was supposed to be part of Uncle Charlies tribute but the new owners of soul train asked him at the last min to perform his new song instead.
I started nursing school but had to quit because life begin but good luck to you. I hear it is major tough getting in the nursing program (at least the colleges here in Georgia). I will keep you in my prayers.
My sister starts nursing school next mth in NC. I also have a cousin n nursing school now as well. BLESS yall nurses!
I finish school March 2010
My father has refused help because he doesn’t think he needs it. He went one time after getting back the 2nd time and literally told the counselor that “if she didn’t know what burning flesh smelled like or if she didn’t have to pick up severed parts of children off the street then he couldn’t help her” so he never went back. Just frustrating… Thanks for listening. Good night y’all.
Thanks for the prayers and welcomes. The great thing about my school is that there is no waiting list for the nursing program. It’s a small town and a private school so I got lucky. I’m just mad I waiting so long in lofe to switch careers. Eyes are getting heavy now. Niters!!!
@Anna, I’ve been meaning to ask you, what will your grandkids call you? Some of my cousins call their grandmother, “Grandmother.” I don’t like it, reminds me of that movie Flowers in the Attic. When my daughter was born my mom who was in her 50’s was still not ready to be a grandmother so she didn’t want to be called Nana, Granny, etc…@ the time we were both All My Children stans & my daughter calls her Mimi (cause somebody, Liza???? had a baby by Adam (is he still alive?) and Liza’s mom said the baby would call her Mimi.)

I watched the jacksons show and it was okay …I feel Jermaine is trying to make the show about him…
And on BGC ….Like i said before i hope Portia whoop that trick..
I need to step away from the phone and the computer my damn self. I called my babies daddy to know if he knew our son was having a baby girl on the 29th. He said that Linda(our first born named after my mother) called him about the due date of her brothers child. He seemed disintereted by my call. I told him that I bought a stroller and a car seat for our grandbaby and that his gf gave them a bassinet amd baby girl clothes( my ex has two new baby girls, a 3 yr. old and a 9 month old) I love when men get/make daughters, it does make them grow up, wake up and see women in a different light.
@Sandra, those things have draw stings. I refuse to believe that some idiot would put wigs for infants in mass production. That’s just dumb. I can’t honey, I can’t.
I have 3 daughters all with different grades of hair. My middle one took after her dads side of the family and has what I call barbie hair. Ill never forget my oldest coming to me crying about why didn’t she have the same type of hair (after spending all morning getting her hair washed and pressed). I explained that yes the other ones hair is nice, but she’s limited in what she can do. Ponytails break it, braids break it off while my oldest and I can wear our hair a million ways and its still healthy and gorgeous. We have to support our kids and teach them to find the beauty in what they have instead of teaching them at a young age that their hair must be long and straight to be beautiful.. smh at this mom (although I don’t think she deserves to be called a mom after this mess). Hope she reads all this and learns something

I am dipping. Jermaine turned 55 this month. He is way too old for adult acne. If he quit putting all that crap in his hair and wearing makeup his face would not look like that.

But Proactive doesn’t work……Look at A.keys face….And Jermaine’s face is plastic and proactive may burn it off…his skin looks really sensitive…..
He is the cry baby of the bunch.

Isn’t Jermaine “very sensitive”?
Obviously you’ve never broken the teeth of any combs in your baby’s hair?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
For real Sandra? So breaking a comb justifies applying harsh chemicals to a child’s head? Relaxers break and thin hair, promote hair loss, stunt hair growth, cause burns and scalp irritation. I will never, ever, put a relaxer on my child’s head and I will teach my daughter(s)to embrace the natural texture of their hair. We as black women need to love ourselves as god made us, sans the weave, wigs, contacts, relaxers, texturizers, fake nails, and heavy makeup. True beauty is naturalness!
The Turks better watch out for this baby momma file some papers. LMFAO

I think if a relaxer is done professionally and the hair is taken care of then it shouldn’t break off. My step daughter is 12 and she just started getting relaxers about every 3 or 4 months. Her hair is extremely long and thick and very hard to manage without a relaxer so if the hair is being taken care of like it should be and not getting over processed then there shouldn’t be any problems. She hasn’t had any scalp burns and her hair is to the middle of her back. It was done to make her think she’d be prettier it was done because it’s alot easier to manage.
@ Anna and Missy
You’re right he doesn’t need Proactive. If he stop usin Armour All and that Kiwi Large Parade Gloss black shoe polish on his hair his face would be fine
@BROWNSUGAPOET, there are tons of ways to manage coarse hair in its natural state. If chemically altering your stepdaughter’s hair works for you guys then more power to you. I for one think it is totally unnecessary. Her hair may be fine now, but there are long term effects with regular use of relaxers.
From my personal experience and from what I’ve seen it’s how you take care of the hair. I know women in their 50s that have been getting perms for over 30 yrs and hadn’t had any problems with their hair because of the relaxers and I know other women that have had problems and it’s because at some point in time they didnt take care of their hair like they should have. Putting s relaxer on my stepdaughter’s hair works fine for me because I have Lupus and since it affects your joints it’s alot easier for me to manage her hair. She has already been taught that she is just as beautiful without it. I don’t feel a person should be condemned if they decide to get their hair relaxed. If they decide they want a “straighter” look then so be it. I am rockin a very short natural right now and love it but that’s not to say that I won’t get another perm a yr from now. I think it’s all about how and what you teach them. What will happen when your girls get older and decide they want perms
@BROWNSUGAPOET
I’m glad you asked that. My children will be brought up in an enviroment that fosters love of your natural self centered around African values and traditions. My inner circle of friends are all naturals so that is pretty much what they will be exposed to. Because of their upbringing I doubt that they will want to relax their hair; however, when they leave my household if they choose to relax I would voice my dissatisfaction. But again I think it will be highly unlikely.
More power to you and your daughter on your journey-it just isn’t for me!
