PICS: BMI Showcase at Havana Club
Last night, BMI Atlanta held it’s 13th annual BMI Unsigned Urban Showcase at the Havana Club with rapper Drake performing with a live band. Industry types and celebrities flew in from around the country to pack the former car dealership.
Local talent Nicoya (above) won Unsigned Artist of the Year Award. And Travis Porter and Big Boi also took home awards. I have no beef with BMI staff, just with Catherine Brewton, the woman who runs the Atlanta office. In my opinion, she’s not nice. In fact, Ms. Brewton looks down her nose at people when she feels you’re not worthy of her time.
Obviously no one ever told her “a smile goes a long way” or to be kind to everyone on your way to the top because you will meet those same people on your way back down.
Even though Ms. Brewton and I have never had words, I tend to remember people like her — not by name — but by her stank attitude.
True leaders get to the top not by being ruthless or disrespectful to others, but by treating everyone with respect and dignity regardless of their status in life. Back in the day when I was just a lowly photographer, I was hired to take pictures at the palatial mansion of Ted Turner and Jane Fonda.
At the party, Mr. Turner approached me several times and engaged me in conversation as if he had known me for years. He even playfully pretended to jump off his balcony so I could get a good shot of him. That’s how you make a lasting impression on others so people remember your name.
Treat everyone with respect and people will feel ashamed to talk bad about you.

I got several tats as well as several piercings but at work, when in professional attire, they are EASILY hidden. I also am working on my master’s and no-nmy hair is not it’s natural color- I darken to make it a richer brown because It looks better…so I guess I’m a hoodrat too!

@ missy – I agree. Almost everyone has something they hold on to from their childhood and youth. For some it’s a bear/doll/GI Joe, some a blanket, clothe & hairstyles, for her it’s her piercing. I had to call an intervention to get my dad out of those swish-swish jogging suits, tall socks and New Balances, so I’m not talking.

I like tatoos, just not placed on the arm right there. It also looks trashy on the boobs. Just my opinion,I think it does tend to give a hoodrat impression, (KCOLE, MO, Tiny and Toya). Does not make them hoodrats, just kinda of makes them look that way. My tatoos are in places not everyone can see them unless I want them to. Imagine how hoodrat Tiny will look in a wedding dress.
On another topic that photo of SG made me gasp. Chicks must need to wear a helmet when hooking up with him as a safety precaution.

Hello All. Lord have mercy, we need some comedy up in this camp. Let me share an old clean joke with you. One of my favorite uncles, God rest his soul, told us this joke back in the 60s: There was a huge, huge human body and it was malfunctioning. Located in this huge body was a colored man, a white man and a Jew. They were standing around, in this huge body, debating what they should do since the huge body wasn’t functioning properly. I am the most blunt person I know, but there is a difference between being blunt about how you feel and being full-on judgmental.
Saying: “Lloyd’s mom looks like a hoodrat.”
And saying “Lloyd’s mom IS your typical garden variety hoodrat.” and then running down a list about how & why this is so, makes him the latter of the two.
There is a fine line between being straightforward and idiotic- he tends to fall off balance on that line a lot.
I think Man’s comments are funny, cute and even quixotic sometimes. But other times, if he was said it aloud, I’d ask him could he “shut the f*ck up?” (And yes, I do this to strangers, aloud, in public when they say ignorant sh*t.)
I ‘m a responsible adult and if I feel like another person is spewing bull**** I don’t have to let them plant it on my lawn without a say…
I think it’s cool when stuff like that is thrown out there…I have 5 children, un-married, 2 fathers…the only thing that stops me from being Miss Hoodrat 2010 is that I work in a professional environment and literally cannot afford not to blend in…
My best friend “do hair” though and trust and believe I’m always salty that I can’t get the new hot cut/color/style. It’s all ways #1, down my back.

This is too much, and not enough.
It is a woman’s mentality that earns her a hoodrat title, not all of the exterior things listed in another post. Wow. Circumstances don’t make a woman a hoodrat…how she handles them does.
Lloyd’s mom is a cute lady. She may not be every man’s cup of tea rarely does one woman fit that mold it seems), but calling her a hoodrat based on her picture isn’t a fair representation of facts. JMO.

I was falling asleep when I got the tattoo I have on my back shoulder. I think the pain really depends on your tolerence.

Everyone’s list of what is considered hoodrat is quite different.
Honestly, your list was very extreme. Basically you called my aunt a hoodrat and she is a Director at a prestigious university here in Atlanta. She had 2 kids before 20, is slightly overweight and has 2 tatts that are not easily seen, but she also has a Phd and has spoke before President Obama.
Furthermore,I have seen Lloyd’s mother in personal 3 times and she has NEVER looked like a hoodrat. She is a “cool” mom but that is about it. I think you need to be careful with the stereotypes espcially when talking about mothers and defining what is hoodrat when you could be offending people on this site.
