After meeting with FBI agents, a Florida Pastor has agreed to call off the Qur’an burning he had planned for this Saturday, to commemorate the anniversary of Sept. 11.
Pastor Terry Jones said he called off the Qur’an bonfire after speaking with the Imam of a planned NY mosque near ground zero who agreed to move the mosque to another location in Manhattan.
But according to Reuters news services, the Imam denies speaking with Jones and has no plans to move the mosque.
Meanwhile, a Baptist church in Topeka, Kansas now says it will burn Qur’ans on Saturday if Pastor Jones’ Gainesville church cancels its Qur’an burning.
According to online reports, the small Westboro Baptist church in Topeka, Kansas has burned a Qur’an once before.
“WBC burned the Koran once – and if you sissy brats of Doomed America bully Terry Jones and the Dove World Outreach Center… change their plans to burn that blasphemous tripe called the Koran, then WBC will burn it (again), to clearly show you some things,” the church announced in a news release this week.
In an interview with ABC’s Good Morning America this morning, U.S. president Barack Obama urged Pastor Jones to call off the Qur’an burning, saying the action would result in a recruiting bonanza for al-Qaeda.
“I just want him to understand that this stunt that he is talking about pulling could greatly endanger our young men and women in uniform who are in Iraq, who are in Afghanistan,”
He later sent greetings to Muslims all over the world celebrating the end of Ramadan today.
Obama’s greetings to the Muslim world prompted Jews to question if Obama would also recognize Rosh Hashanah, the celebration of the Jewish New Year which began yesterday and ends at nightfall on September 10.
So far, there’s been no mention of Rosh Hashanah by Obama — who 25% of Americans polled believe is Muslim — or the White House.
But talk show Diva Wendy Williams sent New Year greetings to the Jews on her Twitter page today.
