Medical Minute: Narcissistic Stare
Here’s an interesting video a loyal reader just sent me. It was filmed the other day during a Trey Songz promo stop at 100.3 The Beat in Philly.
Ladies, study the above picture of Trey Songz well. This is what many in the psych field refer to as a Narcissistic Stare.
Trey Songz is a narcissist who is used to people around him stroking his enormous, yet fragile ego. He became incensed when the DJ told him he wasn’t feeling his reality show.
This news should not have come as a surprise to Trey since his show was a ratings disaster for BET.
But what I want you to watch is the transformation that comes over Trey’s face as it suddenly dawns on him that someone in the room isn’t awestruck by his fake charm.
Watch as Trey ceases whatever he was doing to focus intently on the enemy in the room who dares to criticize him.
Anyone who has ever dealt with a narcissist will recognize the Narcissistic Stare. It is unmistakable and it is one of the hallmarks of narcissism. Another hallmark is the narcissist’s inability to take constructive criticism in any shape or form.
You can almost see the horns growing out of Trey’s scalp as he struggles with his inability to handle criticism.
Pat Finley of the Controlling Selfish Men blog explains the Narcissistic Stare better than I can:
The narcissistic stare has been experienced by many of us who have had the misfortune to associate with Ns [Narcissists]. Presumably, not every N does The Stare but from all reports, a significant majority does. The N’s stare is piercing, unwavering, reptilian. Seemingly flattering, this stare is unnerving – and is meant to be unnerving.
The Ns look right through you. A woman who is not familiar with Ns might think he is simply paying complete and rapt attention to her but he is not. The Ns are staring at you to see how vulnerable you are. Some believe that the Ns use their stare to look through you to your soul for the sole purpose of determining whether you are viable prey or not.
Once you are in a relationship with an N, they stare at you in order to control you. Their withering glare is meant to cow you into submission. It is a strong woman indeed who does not back down under the malevolent narcissistic stare.

I can’t listen to it at work, but I did watch in in antcipation of seeing what a “Narcissistic Stare” looks like. Instead he roped me in. A lot of times I’ve seen people avoid eye contact during interviews. He is looking at the person that is talking to him whenever he isn’t writing. That is VERY cool in my book and not a stare at all. Miss Sandra are you one of those people that can’t look folks in the eye?
In Treys defense he was prolly feeling the no love from the DJ when he walked in the room I went to the drs this am and three sisters are the receptionist them bishes faced turned all up when they saw me and I’m like since when do you enter a drs office where there is a reception and the bish act like she don’t wanna speak fine by me cuz I can be BYTCH TOO!

Poor Trey, I feel more attracted to him since people are being mean to him. I have this thing where the more someone is put down the more I feel bad for them (unless they are a heinous criminal of course, LOL). Maybe he was just listening intently to what the DJ was saying and his opinion. If he was not looking at him then he would be accused of being a narcissist who doesn’t make eye contact with “the little people”, LOL.

Trey’s stare; I know it too well. He was probably just so shocked that the guy would say that to him. Usually you’re cordial to the guest. Trey, you must know ur audience. In this case, you must know if the DJ’s/host are brutal or kissass.
after watching the clip, Trey’s still not ready. He was visibly bothered by the guy’s comment and it changed the tone of the entire interview from that point forward. “i dont want everybody to like me.” huh? wtf? yeah you do. now the reality is everybody will not like you, but in life we dont consume ourselves with making everyone like us. unauthentic. I CAN’T.
I think it was earlier this week or last when I went on record (yeah, i’m that important) and said I’m losing my attraction to trey songz. Trey still sings about sex like he got it for the first time yesterday. He aint on no usher, rkelly level yet and he’s what, on cd number 5?
He doesn’t set trends and he’s not a machine. A trendsetter or machine could never have a failed reality show. A failed reality show meant nobody was interested in him or that show. When the repeats come on folks turn to infomercials. No trey, ur not a machine or trendsetter.

Exactly. Most people would have laughed it off. But Trey showed his true colors in that interview. Narcissists can be very charming people until you criticize them. Then they fall apart. They’re not like normal human beings who can handle criticism and keep it moving. Narcissists see criticism as a serious threat to their well being. Like something close to death.
