Nelly to Ashanti: ‘You’re dying if you leave me’

On-again-off-again celebrity couple Ashanti and Nelly attended Nelly’s 5th Annual Black And White Christmas Ball at Chase Park Plaza in his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri yesterday. Performers included Ashanti and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of Run DMC.

Last week Rap-Up TV caught up with the rapper and asked him why he’s waiting so long to marry Ashanti. “I think you really have to be friends first. It’s not about how long it takes,” he explained. “I’m not a person that wants to get married more than once. If I’ma do it, I’ma do it. You’re dying if you leave me.”

On a side note, I commend him for waiting until he’s absolutely sure he’s found “The One”. Marriage is definitely a big deal and I wish people would take the time to find that person that compliments them and their lifestyle vs. jumping the broom for the sake of saying “I have a man”. Some people want to make sure they are ready and have the right person before they get married. I watched an old movie last night and was curious about the actors in it. I read that the one actor didn’t get married until he was 38 yrs old which was late back in the 1950’s. Isaid he waited because he wanted to be sure he found the right woman because he took marriage very seriously.

I think alot of people get married becuase they have dated someone for a long time and think that is the next step, but if you don’t love someone “for better or for worse and till death do you part” then you shouldnt’ get married. I have to respectfully disagree with you. Marriage doesn’t always mean real commitment. Just look at the divorce rate.

Sometimes marriage is just a means to an end. What that “end” is can differ depending on the people involved.

Although I appreciate the responses!!!

Being married to someone does guarantee a person is making a real commitment outside of the legal perspective: tax write offs, spousal support, talk half of whatever attain during the marriage, etc.

If a person loves you and is committed to only you for 10-15 years then the mariage ceremony is just a formality. It’s a societal norm!

People get married too quickly and don’t realize the commitment it actually is.

My parents have been married for 28 years…That’s what I want…A lifetime commitment.

I think the meaning of marriage varies between person to person.

For me, as a Christian, It’s the commitment before God. Marriage isn’t just something you jump into but a serious commitment between you, that person, and God. Once you’ve done this in front of him it’s sealed. He doesn’t take marriage lightly and neither should you.

Also, it’s the final step that says “I can’t live without you” “you’re the only person I want to spend the rest of my life with” “you’re the one” etc…

Marriage is a contract therefore it is always a business deal. Choosing not to see it (not you specifically) that way doesn’t change that.

That cheaper to keep her is not always true. If you are paying half of everything in your household depending on your house hold. A court order of child support can be less then what one was paying.

(Spousal support usually is paid if one person in the marriage wasn’t working.)

When I was 12, I said I never wanted to get married and felt obligated to marry the first dude and was unhappy the whole time, never wanted to do it again, then I met the one I have now and Man, I can’t imagine NOT being married to him. He never was married and said he never wanted to get married but then he met me.

Now, can we both still show our azzes? absolutely but we still want to be married to one another. Is it forever? He says divorce is not an option for him. And I hope it’s forever, but when he makes me mad I say I’m getting a divorce, am I really? Yeah OK

Congrats to them. I have found that many ppl against marriage never saw a positive couple. Besides his smile one of the reasons I was attracted to my husband was that his parents had been married for 38 yrs. It’s now 52 yrs. Most ppl don’t marry because they have nothing to compare it to. It’s too acceptable to have kids out of wedlock and shack up.

@Anna sin’t that the truth. Even Diddy admitted that one of the reason’s he’s so hesitant on getting married is because he never saw an example of marriage as a child. He never got to experience it so he’s in no hurry to go to that level.

marriage ain’t nothing to take lightly. there is a DEFINITE difference between marriage and (1) going together and (20 shacking up and (3) “fiance” status.

aside from moral accountability (which is the part nobody cares about these days), there is real legal and financial accountability and benefits.

Death do us part is a crazy notion. My folks have been married for over 33 years and I WISH they would get divorced sometimes. Drive me insane!

Anywhoo, Nelly and Ashanti will “jump the broom” if and when they’re ready. (IF he grows up and stops bustin’ down every groupie/video chic, IF her mama stops being her friend and using shorty as a meal ticket, etc.)

I feel you on that. Just because ppl are married for a long time does not mean they enjoy it. I watched “The Doctors” today and they said the longer you are married it may not be so good for your health. LOL. Marriage is a constant that reminds us “why did I get married”. Ppl forget how you got him is how you keep him. The longer we are w/someone we tend to take them for granted the most. Just because you are married doesn’t mean it gives you a pass to stop dating.

His words are being taken out of context completely. Nelly is simply stating what the vows state “til death do us part”. He’s saying that he’s not going to rush into marrying the wrong person only for it to end in divorce. When he gets married, he wants it to be forever.
