Gang Rape of 11-Year-Old Girl Stirs Racial Tensions in Texas Town
By now you’ve heard the shocking news about the gang rape of an 11-year-old girl that has resulted in the arrests of 18 men and boys in a small Texas town.
The gang rape, and its aftermath, have stirred racial tensions in Cleveland, Texas, a town of 9,000 about 50 miles north of Houston.
The 18 suspects are all black and the girl is Hispanic.
“It’s becoming a black and white issue because it happened over in the quarters. It’s segregating our community again,” said Brenda Myers, who runs the Community and Children’s Impact Center in Cleveland, one of the few programs for Cleveland’s youth. “The reaction is anger, devastation.”
The sexual assaults took place on Nov. 18 after a 19-year-old man convinced the unidentified girl to take a ride with him and two of his friends. They eventually ended up in a dilapidated blue house on the outskirts of town. The men ordered the girl to disrobe. She later told police they threatened to have older girls beat her up if she didn’t comply.
The men were later joined by other males from the neighborhood who got on their cell phones and invited their friends. When an adult relative of one of the males approached the house, the group, including the girl, fled out of a rear bedroom window. She left behind her bra and panties.
The group moved to a dingy, abandoned trailer where the sexual assaults continued. Police believe a total of 28 men and boys had sex with the girl.
Retiree Joe Harrison said he spotted the 11-year-old standing outside the abandoned trailer earlier that day. To him she looked older than her 11 years. She wore dark makeup and long hair. He later heard loud music blaring from the trailer. By then he thought the girl had been picked up by her mother.
Some of the suspects videotaped the assaults on their cell phones and shared the videos with friends at school. The gang rape was brought to the attention of police after the videos went viral.
The girl’s mother, Maria, has seen her daughter only one time since Child Protective Services placed the girl with a foster family and restricted the family from even speaking to her.
Officials brought the girl to visit her mom when Maria was hospitalized recently with an illness.
“My daughter was crying and crying and hugging on me,” Maria said. “She didn’t want to leave. She misses her family and wants to come home.”
Police suggested relocating the family to a different city due to death threats. Several of the suspects are star athletes at Cleveland High School. One of them is the son of a school board member. All are visible in the videos assaulting the girl.

Maria’s two older daughters, who are in advanced placement classes and the band, and her 9-year-old son have all cried about being uprooted. However, the 11-year-old, who was withdrawn from Cleveland schools when the videos surfaced, is enrolled in gifted and talented classes at her new school and is “doing fine,” Maria said.
The stress has grown so intense, the 16-year-old daughter said, that her parents considered separating, while the 11-year-old is having regrets about following through with the case.
But Maria wants those who stole her daughter’s childhood prosecuted. She said her daughter was threatened with beatings or death if she refused to cooperate.
“These guys knew she was in middle school,” Maria said. “You could tell that whenever you talked to her. She still loves stuffed bears.” Source

I hear so many stories where young girls are getting in cars with random guys they do not know or only recognize from school or somewhere. What happened to not talking to strangers and definitely not getting in cars with people you do not know.

As a mother of an 11 yr old daughter, I am angered that this girl and her family is being harrassed by the general public when she is the victim. We’re supposed to be a civilized nation yet this community and its residents are placing blame on a child for being gang raped. For the life of me, I don’t understand the logic behind it. And there are so many questions I have regarding why she was left alone to roam the streets but I’ll let that go for now. This family has suffered enough. My prayer goes out to this little girl. I pray her womb wasn’t damaged to the point where she can’t bare children later on in life. I pray she doesn’t become pregnant. I pray she doesn’t have any sexually transmitted diseases. I had this happen at my high school. I was right in the classroom with a teacher with the door wide open DIRECTLY across from a bathroom where a white girl entered with 2 boys and had sex with both of them in the school bathroom.
The boys came and told about it and the girl got embarassed and said they held her down and raped her and she screamed. I and two other teachers were in the classroom at the time and remembered seeing her hanging around outside the classroom with the guys AFTER she would have claimed it happened. Our school had 1100 students, roughly 100 of them Black. When the police came and picked them Black boys up for rape with several people (including myself) KNOWING she had not been raped- it was damn near like the Watts riots in there. She later admitted it was consensual and dropped the charges, but the boys parents sued and the girl came back to school for ONE day and got threatened SOOOOOO badly, she had to attend school in another COUNTY.
So- from judging this story and the questions I already have- I can see why SOME folks may be threatening that girl and her family. Sometimes “rape” ain’t always “rape.” Sometimes, its “When being a fast-azz goes wrong and goes PUBLIC.” IJS….

While the 28 males should definitely be sent to prison/jail. I think authorities need to question this childs parents. We are parents of CHILDREN!! You can’t watch them 24/7 and honestly you don’t need to. If your 11 year old is wearing makeup there is a problem. If she thinks its okay to get into a car with strange adult men there is something going on.
As a parent you can see differences in your childs behavior that aren’t the norm for that kid. I think something else was going on in that kids home that the reports aren’t getting to. The media is trying to publicly put these guys on trial and rile up the community but in the same instance they’re missing the bigger issue.

I just talked to an industry friend who said this kind of thing happened regularly in her middle school when she was 11. She said girls gladly gave up the goods inside the school and boys came from other schools to stand in line to receive her goodies. That’s what I think happened here. The girl was willing but the law says she’s too young to consent.

A case like this has never surfaced, however, I do recall an incident where a girl, 14, went to Galveston with this 40 yr old man and his 3 friends. She didn’t say she was raped, but admitted to having consensual sex with the 40yr old man she claimed as her boyfriend.

I just talked to an industry friend who said this kind of thing happened regularly in her middle school when she was 11. She said girls gladly gave up the goods inside the school and boys came from other schools to stand in line to receive her goodies. That’s what I think happened here. I feel a way about this because my cousin is DEAD now because of a similar situation. My cousin was a little slow, and he met some girl on MYSPACE. In Michigan I believe his name was Nathaniel Abraham was convicted at the age of 11. They didn’t want him to be released until he was 21.

I have a hard time believing they didn’t know she was not of age. The quote said the guys knew she was in middle school. As for why she didn’t scream for help, have you threatened an 11yr old lately? Their simple minds actually tend to believe you can and will go through on your threats.
