Rolling Stone Crowns Eminem King of Hip Hop

According to Rolling Stone magazine, Eminem — not Jay Z or Kanye West — is the undisputed King of Hop Hop.

And why not? Black rappers have destroyed what once was a cerebral art form with their materialistic bragging, self hate and absentee father issues.

The ignorance that substitutes for Hip Hop today has caused true fans to turn away from the genre in droves.

While others are watching the throne, Rolling Stone was watching the numbers. Editors of the iconic music magazine used album sales and chart figures dating back 2 years in deciding who should take the crown.

“Thanks to his two latest chart-topping albums, 2009’s Relapse and 2010’s Recovery, the man otherwise known as Slim Shady sold more than two and a half times the number of albums as the second-ranked Lil Wayne during our survey period,” wrote Rolling Stone.

It doesn’t matter to Rolling Stone that Eminem, real name Marshall Bruce Mathers III, is bordering on 39 years old. Mathers embodies Hip Hop’s credo of “keeping it real” without having to tear up a $300K Maybach to do it.

THEY WOULD, but whatever. The more disturbing question is when did he begin his angelina jolie transformation?

I never cared for him because he was just difficult for no reason. I remember interviewers asking him basic questions and him being an ass in the process. And when he tried to clown Will Smith, I had enough.

I agree. Rap is not rap anymore, it’s Hip Hop. People reference ol skool with Hip Hop, but I think it should be the other way around. Every song out is a dance song with no real lyrics. Eminem has nothing but lyrics. Even his dance songs have meaning, you might not like what he has to say, but he is saying something. I personally would listen to Eminem before Jay Z or Kanye any day.

If a black rapper had the amount of success that Eminem had, there would be no discussion on that rapper being named as the King of Rap.

Though I’m not an Eminem fan, I will say I don’t hear him going around bragging or claiming to be the king of rap like others do.

I heard about this on the radio this morning while driving to work (if it’s the same list) . I think Drake is named in the top 5. Now, I really have a problem with that.

His 1st CD was Banging BUT THAT IS ABOUT IT! Now, don’t get me wrong, he’s lyrically talented but he is BY NO MEANS King of Hip Hop! As far as the above mentioned from Sandra, have you been hearing the same artist as the rest of the general public because he is one of the most conceited rappers out, he picked w/celebs (and still do) in order to become relevant, I don’t recall his father being a strong presence in his life AND he continually speaks about hurting and/or killing women. IMO he has, hands down, surpass any booty shaking in videos, chopping up maybachs, champagne flaunting, big chain wearing rapper I’ve seen thus far as far as issue are concerned!

Um…I have to agree with Rolling Stone. That boy can RAP. Whenever he gets on a track with “US”, he always does the track dirty. He outshined Kanye, Drake, Lil Wayne on that Forever remix. But I can’t deny the last 2+ years the man has been on abosolute fire. His chit been second only to Kanye. :shrugs:

I admit Drake is on there because I’m looking at “potential.” So far he has been creative lyrically. Not just rapping about how much money he got.

Well if RS used sales and charts figures..then he would be the king. I heard several years ago, Eminem was the biggest selling and highest charting rapper. You have to remember, Eminem is popular with white kids…who BUY CD’s..not bootleg and illegally download them. Plus, he may rap a little about materialism, badassism, etc, those are not the main theme of his muscic, and although he comes from a rough part of Detroit, white parents don’t see him as threatening or dangerous. And if you’ve seen him in interviews, he can talk in complete, grammatically correct sentences. So he’s not bringing illiteracy and “hood” ideals to white children. That said, if you’re over 30 and still listening to mainstream “rap” these days, you have to feel a little foolish. The chit is so childish it’s embarrasing. We don’t make “rap” anymore, the same way we don’t make R&B anymore…now white people from Europe are making better R&B music than American Blacks . Go figure…

He does outsell and WILL continue to outsell the likes of Jay-Z, Kanye, and Lil Wayne, amongst others. Eminem is a beast of the mic and he has the record sales to prove it. This is that same sh(i)t I was talking about between Britney and Beyonce. Beyonce might be a better entertainer and all but when it comes to those record sales, Beyonce too has to step to the side because Britney Spears kills the competition.

On another note, I do not and will not ever support any of Eminem’s endeavors. I give credit where credit is due, he’s a talented one but all the bull that hes started over the years did it for me a long time ago. :coffee:

    Cupcake says:

I’m coming out of lurk mode for this one… and this is going to be a book… LOL

As a hardcore EMINEM supporter I am happy that he is getting the props that are due to him. I will say this, I remember when EMINEM first hit the mainstream back in ’99ish… he was all over the place and his tunes were quite catchy. I have to admit that I really thought that he was a fad passing through with the bleach blonde look and all. I didn’t really listen to his unedited music, just what was on the airwaves. When I did hear a few of his explicit songs I just thought he was so angry. When he came out with the song “The Way I Am” I began to understand him a little more… and my support of him grew.
When “8 Mile” hit the wide screen sheeeiitt I saw that flick like 3 times back to back! Although the story was loosely based off of his life and some of what he went through I realized that #1 I respected the dedication he has for his craft and #2 I had a mad crush on him! Throughout the years he was always in the spotlight for negative stuff that was going on in his life, and his struggles were out there for the entire world to see. He continued to put out music and was then gone from the scene for a moment as he dealt with the demons in his life.
Fast forward to ’09/’10 when “I’m Not Afraid” hit the airwaves… that was my song!! I was never one that really bought a lot of rap albums, but this song was different than any other I heard. It was very personal and it was more than a song, it was a testimony! I remember when EMINEM performed the song on the BET award show I believe.. the response that he received from his peers and the crowd was amazing.. he received a standing ovation! Honestly speaking, when he was performing that song I listened to the depth of his words and I was overwhelmed with emotion. To think that this man almost met his demise because of personal demons within himself and he was able to turn it all around after being given a SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE brought tears to my eyes. For the first time ever, I went out and purchased a EMINEM CD.. “Recovery”.
Since listening to “Recovery” I began to understand this man’s fight for his LIFE. Through all that this man has been through one thing that cannot be disputed is his TALENT. After I bought “Recovery” I went and purchased ALL of his other CD’s and what I heard blew my f’in mind!! This man is a lyrical genius with a brilliant mind!! His cadence and triple time flow, syllables and enunciation is out of this world! As I began to listen to all of his cd’s I actually listed to his words and could somehow see where all of his anger came from. I believe that experiencing hurtful things in my life made me relate to him more. I’ve been drug free my entire life and will continue to do so.. however addictions aren’t only in drug/alcohol form. Addictions can relate to relationships, spending habits and so forth. So even though my addictions and struggles weren’t the same as his, they were just as disruptive in my life.
A lot of people look at these celebrities and think that their lives are perfect, but they hurt like we do if not more. They may put up a facade for the public, but can be a complete mess behind closed doors. We all knew that the man we knew as EMINEM struggled with his drug addiction, had a disruptive life and so forth… but look at where he is now. I think that people are finally seeing him as more than EMINEM but as Marshall Mathers III… get past the rhymes and the beat .. he is a responsible father to his biological daughter, his adoptive daughter (Kim’s niece) and a father figure to Kim’s other daughter as well as guardian to his brother. He did not let naysayers get to him, he did not give in to reverse racism, he did not give in to the demons in his life, he recognized that he was given a 2nd chance and no longer involves himself with BS.. his maturity level is where it’s supposed to be. This man deserves all of the accolades that he has received and will receive. It doesn’t matter that he will be 39 years of age this year.. talent has no age limit on it and he is at the top of his game!
And no, this isn’t a good picture of him.. the photographer/editor should be shot for that!

#Team EMINEM #Team Marshall Mathers III #Team Shady ALL DAY / ER’ DAY!!!

This art form dates back a bit further than 2 years as well as the span of his career. If this decision was made all inclusive of other factors outside of sales, what would the conclusion be? There are so many talented hip hop artist (dating back) I would have trouble narrowing it down.

No hate, but I have never been a fan of Em. And this is from when he first came out. He’s lyrically good, but great  . I think most of his appeal came from, he was a white boy w/decent lyrics that didn’t consist of Ice Ice Baby or Jump Around (see V. Ice and House of Pain). And he was cosigned by Dre, the undisputed greatest hip hop producer of our time ,IMO. But for me, Em started he same way 50 started, picking beefs to get his name out there. (notice he never picked a beef w/someone who could slaughter his a$$ on a track) He went for the Britney’s and the Justins and such. Plus, for me until recently his rap cadence was always the same, whiny and annoying as fvck. He sounded like he was always suffering from post-nasal drip.

Using this as criteria, the ONLY thing you can hold against Wayne is POSSIBLY delivery (you either like his voice or you don’t) and intelligence (because he usually rappin bout some ignant chit or sex).

See this is where it gets twisted. Its not about who is current or who is popular. We are talking straight lyrical assasins and that shyt doesnt expire. Again, any of those rappers can still shyt on anyone that is currently riding the charts with some shyt they released over 10 years ago.

I don’t see any posts here with incorrect grammar, just because I openly admitted I wasn’t interested in reading your diatribe of bullsh*tb doesn’t make you smarter than anyone else on this post so get over yourself.

While Wayne does talk a helleva lot about sex and other shat …he will hitchu with a “Misunderstood” or a “Georgia Bush” and fukk your head up. The dude may be high most of the time but I can tell he paid attention in school/college while he was there.

Whereas Jay-Z graduated from high school in 1982. Are we really gonna want to listen to what a 50 yo man gotta say in 8-9 years? If we by that time are pushing or at 40 our ownselves?

I do think if Wayne didn’t put out all that microwave shyt he would be formidable. I was hoping that that skid bid he did would make his music deeper but he got out on the same shyt and I was thoroughly dissappointed.

@ DMiss .. I didn’t write what I did for replies, responses, or co signs.
I don’t need an audience or anything of the like. Also, if you didn’t read my post you have no right to call it BS.. and how can a person’s spin on something be BS anyways?

Further more, I didn’t say that anyone here in this post or in particular used incorrect grammar.. I was making a point. But again you couldn’t see the forest for the trees.

So like I said.. skip my loooong post and keep it moving to the next just like er’body else. I don’t need co signs, High 5′s, comments, or replies… so unless Aunty herslef feels partial to my post then it is what it is.

Sandra you couldn’t have said it better. There are a handful of rappers whose music i appreciate, but the rest is garbage. I am tired of hearing about money, diamonds, cars, ho’s etc. I have watch this hip hop scene slowly sink away. I give it a couple of more years to stay alive.

@ Jay Bee … I believe that every artist’s story is unique in it’s own way whether they are Black, White, Brown, or whatever. Being that the post was about EMINEM I talked about how the talent of this particular artist has impacted both my life and my views of rap music as a whole.

Other artist (rap) that I dig are Kanye West, Andre 3000, Bun B, Drake, Eightball & MGJ, Lil’ Wayne, Ludacris, Nicki Minaj, Scarface and maybe a few more that I jam to on the regular. Of all these artists I can say that I’ve only purchased albums by Kanye West, OutKast, Drake, and Nicki Minaj. (Mainly because my significant other has all the others and what’s his is mine). :0)

    One Love!
