The price of Gucci backpacks are about to skyrocket. According to the Atlanta Journal, a 13-year-old boy was beaten by as many as 6 youths who targeted him for his trendy Gucci backpack:

Four people accused of beating and robbing a teenager at a Forsyth County shopping center could be linked to other crimes in the area, police said Wednesday.

A 13-year-old boy required medical attention after being robbed of his Gucci backpack and beaten outside the theater Friday night at The Avenue Forsyth near Cumming. The teen sustained cuts and abrasions in the assault and was punched in the face, police said.

Roberto Emilio Basilio and Ayinde Kadeen Woodley, both 18, and Anthony Jason Riddle and Jose Luis Sotero, both 17, each face charges of theft by taking and robbery, both felonies, and battery, a misdemeanor, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators believe at least two others may also have been involved in the crime. Source

I remember growing up when people were jumping folks for Starter Jackets, Jordan’s, and Sony Walkman CD players….there is nothing new under the sun… My daughter doesn’t own a name brand item with the exception of the name which she was given at birth, her birth right. He should have just given it up as material things can be replaced, physical and emotional scars last a lifetime. Oddly people who rob, steal, kill and attempt to destroy fail to realize you will get caught and you will end up in jail where people will take ur cookies over and over and over.. the young men fail to realize that piece of material will cost them their manhood when they go to jail… as life would have it, they jump an innocent boy therefore they will be jumped, pumped, karma comes quicker as we post up in these last days and times.

Hell my parents could afford it but they didnt, I had to learn to work for what I wanted. Besides hes 13 so what does he really need with a backpack like that? At that age your whole purpose for having a backpack is for having something to hold your school books in and it doesnt have to be designer. I think that arresting the parents is a little extreme. It sounds to me as if he was leaving the movie theatre that they have there. My parents let me go to the movies, mall, etc. with friends on a regular basis when I was that age. He wasn’t just out roaming the streets.

With that being said ain’t no way in hail I’m buying my son a $900 backpack.

@ Auntie…I respect your opinion. I don’t think it’s outrageous for a parent to drop a 13-year old to a movie at 7pm. My parents did it on the regular. Considering you said you were in bed at 9pm at the same age, our upbringing was definitely different, thus the varying opinions.

Oh and piggybacking on the hair thing…I wasn’t able to wear my hair down until I was 13 and only on “special occasions”, Easter, Birthdays, Christmas.

I also wasn’t allowed to wear pantihose, just tights. I could go on for days about the crazy rules my mother had for us. The best one was that we weren’t allowed to sing outside (I know…don’t ask me why).

Our youth hsve got to do better! I don’t think the parents should be arrested in this case though. Would I buy my daughters a $900 backpack or purse? That doesn’t necessarily mean the parents are bad parents because they did so however. I’ve made mistakes along the way, it’s just a blessing that this one can be learned from and isn’t final.

@ Dawn Sheen me and my s/o was just talking about that with our children, I remember having to watch my back @ 13 because I had a Dallas Cowboys starter coat and some brand new Js, those were hot commodities back then lol but I agree with others that said arresting the parents is a little extreme. Even though some of us say we would never buy a backpack that expensive for our kids we all want what’s best for ours, I know I said I always wanted to provide things for my kids that I couldn’t get as a child because my mom couldn’t afford it. The little white kids in Highland Park and Preston Hollow carry bags like that and some that cost more all the time, the only thing the parent(s) did wrong was not pick their child up or drop them off. When your kid owns things that valuable you should be very protective and cautious of their safety.

In some circles, spending $900 on your kid is the equivalent of the average person spending $50 on theirs; you don’t have to dumb down your lifestyle to please people.

Carrington– I agree. Such a valuable item is possibly excessive for a 13-yr-old, but if the parents can afford it then why not.

I’m curious as to whether the bag was actually real, though. Knock-offs are much easier to come by and they’ve become a lot better made.

However; I would not let a 13 y.o. child be by himself at night like that. There are way too many crazies out and about roaming the streets these days.

Not everyone grew up in destitute circumstances I had any and everything I wanted for the most part growing up, but I still chose to get a job at 15 and buy my own things, or at least contribute.

My family chose to focus on building and amassing things such as land/property. Most commenters actually seemed to disagree with Sandra calling her statement to have the parents punished harsh.

It’s nothing wrong with splurging on your child, but like someone mentioned earlier, hopefully he has a nice sized college/trust fund as well as designer clothes. This is spoken from someone who had a trust set up to pay out so much money per year after I turned 18 to asist with college and living expenses. I was able to go to college without taking out student loans thanks to good finiacial advice and planning.

1) He was not “roaming the streets”. The first sentence says they were at a shopping center…and it goes on to read that the beatoing occured outside of a theatre. He’s a teenage boy and school is out for the summer…what’s the big deal?!? He could have been accompanied by an older cousin or with a group of friends. We can’t assume he was there by himself and villanize the parents.

2) STOP ASSUMING SHYT! No one said his parents bought him that bag. Maybe his grandmother or aunt bought it for him for his birthday. Maybe his big brother or sister gave it to him. Maybe he won it. Maybe he borrowed it. Maybe he worked all year and all summer long to buy it. Maybe it’s a fake-azz bag!

3) Like Carrington said, people are jumped for ipods, iphones and sneakers, does that mean young people shouldn’t be allowed to own these either? GTFOH!

4) Instead of trying to tell parents how they should and should not be spending their hard earned money, try criticizing 4 grown men, two 18 years old and two 17 year olds about jumping a 13 year old. This is very sad! Just because you can give your child expensive things….doesn’t mean that you should. Children must learn the value of money and how to appreciate things. If you have it all in your youth, what will you aspire to want later in life? My parents made high 6 figures when I was in school and I never had name brand anything! However, the free lunch kids, had every name brand you could imagine. Not saying that’s the case here. I am just thankful my parents saved for my future which included college, land, my wedding and trust funds for my children and their children. I am about building my own family’s wealth and not adding to the wealth of the House of Gucci!!!!

Getting a good, nutritious meal is a luxury to some children, so does that make the parent bad for being able to supply that?! I’m kind of in the middle on this. Who’s to say that he didn’t get the back pack for his birthday or Christmas. I know I’ve spent way over 900 on dam video games. I have 3 boys, my oldest is 13 and nothing he ever wants is under $100. His damn Ipod touch over 200, his damn 4G phone 200, his damn watch and necklace he got for his last birthday was 600 bucks. For his 14th birthday, he said he wanted to build him a studio. True enough you shouldn’t buy your kids whatever they want, but at the same time why would expect somebody to try to take your shyt. What’s with bashing the parents because they bought THEIR kid an expensive bag? If he’s a good kid and does what’s expected of him why not reward him. Maybe they feel if he knew what it’s like to have the best maybe he would work hard to be the best in order to keep it. The carrot works better than the stick in most cases.

What’s the purpose of not being able to say the word lie as a child. I was allowed to say it. In fact my parents made sure I knew the definition of the word and the context in which it is used so that when they caught me or my brothers and sisters in a lie we knew exactly what the deal was because untruths were unacceptable in my home. No matter what we got in trouble for if we lied about it the punishment was ten times worse than if we would have told the truth (as it is in most families). My parents said what they meant and meant what they said. No sense in sugar coating a lie by calling it a “story” that’s just stupid. Lots of stories that are not true (fiction) teach good life lessons so to me, coming from a parenting stand point it’s ridiculous, in my opinion that is. Sandra, how can you blame the parent’s for their child being attacked! I’m a mom, I work to take care of my child along with his father. My son is also 13 years-old, and he too likes nice things. Does this mean I’m an awful, parent…No! I have no problem, buying my child some things he may like, ie: Jordans, Trues, Meks, etc…however, he does well in school, he plays sports and he does things within the community. The problem here is the parents of the thugs who attacked the child…maybe if they were instilling some values and pushing them to do something with their lives…they wouldn’t be on their way to skid row. Because next time, the idiots will kill. Get them out of society and placed them where they belong JAIL or HELL!

I so agree w/you! It also cracks me up when parents or the children of their parents decide that not buying their children expensive items feel that they are better parents than others who do buy such items!

Trust me, I was spoiled, but I had discipline, I was nurtured & I had boundaries. I had a job by the time I was 13 years old & had to maintain good grades and I’ve been working non-stop since. My mom’s angle was “it makes me wanna do that much more for you when you’re trying to do for self!” She also did not want me to be “caught up” by another individual who can do such things when I got older! They needed to be a little more chilvarious than that!

I can understand where both of you are coming from. There are things that Adults say and when a child says it, it sounds like they’ve just cursed somebody out. I had a discussion recently with my 4 year old son’s teacher because he says penis and vagina and not a cute little made up name. She feels like it’s too harsh for a 4 year to say, but if somebody is doing something to my son or someone that he knows, I want to be clear about what is going on. i don’t want to have to figure out what a new-new, coo- coo, or any other name is. Like u said What works for one family may not work for another.

People speak from their perspective and have various opinions. It isn’t that serious because people are going to raise their children and instill whatever values they see fit. It’s either going to work out or it won’t.

My mom provided all of us with everything we needed, and they didn’t always have an expensive price tag on them. She said, “If you have everything now, you won’t enjoy things later in life. Work for what you want, and you will appreciate it more.” Many kids today are so materialistic, spoiled, entitled, and unappreciative. I just hope that parents put that much effort into their kids education and future, and not so much into what their kids have because, as you can see, it can be gone in a minute.

I don’t run in that circle. What I was saying is that I know parents that think by spoiling your child or doing things such as was mentioned is actually not parenting. There are many forms of parenting and as long as a child is nurtured, respectful, obedient and do right by school, humans, animals, etc., no other parent should try and tell another parent what to do and not to do for their child! PrettyG07 we were told that lie is like saying a cuss word when I was a child growing up, and I don’t think it’s stupid, to me it’s called “staying in a child’s place”. Your parents were wrong because a child isn’t even accountable for their own sins until after they’re 12 yrs of age (look it up in the Bible), so even if you didn’t tell the truth you weren’t necessarily lying anyway. It’s not sugarcoating it they know what the difference is in telling the truth and telling a story it;s just another choice of words. Also, I come from the “children are to be seen and not heard” era so a lot of things that go on today weren’t tolerated back then and maybe if some of us went back to these old teachings then there wouldn’t be so many grown azz kids running their households! So don’t tell me what’s stupid, you raise your kids how you want and in my house I will raise mine the way I see fit. I am raising respectable scholars, not dumb azz thugs and hoes in training. @wolf, my kids 5&4 say penis and vagina too. My mom’s eyes almost fell our when she heard them say it. Kids need to know the technical term, not “wee-wee”. I’m pregnant and they say where will the baby fall out, I told them my vagina. They said it out one day, I told them they can’t say eBay anywhere but to mommy and daddy.

He is my responsibility, and good-common-sense parenting would be the determining factor in protecting his safety.

Yeah – kids are at risk for being attacked for anything – but why further increase the risk? We’re not talking about a socially responsible adult here – were talking about a 13 yr. old kid.

He could very well earn the bag with all A’s, he could very well be the most stellar child I have, and I could very well afford it, but his life would mean more to me than some material shyt. It’s crazy out here. SMDH.

I would buy my child a LV book bag. I would take the J train to Canal street and tell her to take her pick at the choice of bags on the curb or in the chinese store, then give the man 25$ for the item.

If she wanted a real LV bag i would buy it for her when she

2-It would be a gift after graduating Law school

Back in the day i remember my friends getting robbed and even killed for thier 8 Ball jackets and door knocker earrings. I never got robbed via gun point for my door knockers but it is always that one crackhead family member who would take your $hit.

It was common to rock fake Gucci bags, LV bags and even MCM bags back then because they were real leather…bootlegg but real. I had a real Gucci bag as a teen it was a tote and it was blue with white G’s on it. I bought the fake ones and would cut them up and glue them to our head bands, clip barrets, belts and even the pocket to our jeans to accessorise our real bags.

Those were the dayz…Eric B and Rakim Eric B never smiled but he was fine as hell. Wonder how he look today?

TWO of My Uncles lost their SONS because they were wearing Custom-made Starter jackets (1 Stabbed and the other Shot) One was living with the Father and the Other lived with the Mother but in BOTH CASES the Mother bought them Those Jackets… And in BOTH CASES the Fathers (MY Uncles) warned then NOT to Wear those jackets UNLESS they were going somewhere WITH THEM (Real)

So, it’s not okay for me to opine that the restriction of using the word lie is stupid, but it is okay for you to flat out say that my parents were “wrong” to allow me to use the term in its correct context based off of a religious belief that you assume my family holds? That makes me wonder if the subject of hypocrisy also was ever discussed along with “telling stories”.

I asked a question (like I said above, incorrect punctuation) and I gave my opinion. I did not say it was wrong not to use the term “telling stories”. I stated my opinion. And as far as being seen and not heard, because of personal experiences my parents felt that was not a method of child rearing that worked for them. Yes, I was brought up with manners. No, I never disrespected my parents or acted like a “grown ass kid” in my parent’s household. As a matter of fact I completely skipped out on the whole rebellious stage that most adolescents seem to go through. I rebelled at the age of 19 when I decided that I didn’t want to follow my parents rules and moved out. They made it clear and it was understood that it was their way or the highway. I chose the highway. What I said was not a personal attack on you, your family or your personal methods of child rearing. I simply asked a question and at the end of my comment I did inference that maybe that it was some old school method. And as far as being twelve in order to be held accountable, that didn’t fly at home. If you knew better and still lied or did something out of order then you have to face the consequences. I’m talking about the concept of using the word lie or “telling stories” not when is it possible for a child to go to hell because they told a lie. Thank you for your time. Enjoy your day

Thank you for understanding where I was coming from. There were no code words in my home growing up. I know from firsthand experience that children can sound crude at times, but that just gives a parent the chance to educate their children in being tactful when they are speaking to people, and my parents had ample opportunity to do so believe me lol.

I agree that its now taboo to talk about child rearing with parents. Im a young mother(28) who was raised old school and raise my daughters the same. I was raised by my ENTIRE family as well as close family friends. I feel so alone sometimes when trying to create the same environment for my girls.

A lot of people my age don’t make their kids respect their elders, teach responsibility and accountability, let kids be kids, etc. We are quick to take offense at any and everything now.

@ E & H – shoot, when I grew up, you stayed in a child’s place. You did not embark on adults talking and if they were talking, they didn’t wanna even here excuse me! Please, I’ve been “floored” more than once by my grandma, my mom, my aunts, etc. That’s how it was back then! Not anymore! And to be honest, my neighbors floored me a couple of times.
