The much-hyped debut season premiere of Love & Hip Hop Atlanta aired Monday night on VH1. The premiere episode was available on other blogs for at least a week, but I chose not to post it until after the network premiere.
The Love & Hip Hop NY spin off features veteran music producer Stevie J, rapper Lil Scrappy, his mother Mama Dee, baby mother Erica, and other lesser known Atlanta personalities, entrepreneur Mimi Faust, singer Karlie Redd and her boyfriend Antonio Reid (LA Reid’s son), singer K.Michelle, rapper Rasheeda and her husband/manager, and singer Joseline Hernandez.
A successful urban reality show requires good acting, likable characters and believable plot lines. LHH Atlanta lacks all of that. LHH Atlanta follows the typical urban reality show pattern: arguing, drink tossing, manufactured fights, bad acting.
Produced by Mona Scott-Young, LHH Atlanta has that throw-it-at-the-wall-and-see-what-sticks feel to it.
The main plot centers around Grammy winning musician Stevie J (Eve‘s ex) and his baby mama, Mimi Faust, who’ve been together for 15 years. Mimi complains about her man spending all of his time in the studio and not enough time at home. They have a 2-year-old daughter together, and Stevie is supposedly sleeping with his artist, Joseline, a Hispanic, post-surgery transgender (allegedly).
Mona drop hints along the way about Joseline’s questionable gender, and Stevie J’s lifestyle. At one point, Mimi’s friend, Ariana, curiously says, “Stevie doesn’t like women.”
Singer K.Michelle reveals her pain and heartbreak over her breakup with “MempHitz” Wright — who is married to Antonia “Toya” Wright, of Tiny & Toya.
K.Michelle tearfully explains to Rasheeda how she was signed to Jive Records by MempHitz who assaulted her and spent $2 million of her recording budget on “chains and rings” — basically the same thing he’s probably doing to Toya.
Toya and MempHitz are currently honeymooning in Paris, France — on Toya’s dime, since MempHitz doesn’t have a job. Toya swears she’s got herself a good man. But hopefully she watched last night’s episode and paid attention to what K.Michelle said. It’s just a matter of time before Toya’s money runs out and he starts looking for another sugar mama.
