Once again the media is stirring up controversy where there should be none. Boxer Floyd Mayweather is being a accused of stiffing a waitress. Mayweather, 37, and his entourage tallied up a bill of $25,300 in food and drink at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas after he defeated Marcos Maidana on Saturday.
The NY Post and other media outlets noted breathlessly that Mayweather and his entourage drank expensive bottles of champagne and wine and consumed 200 chicken wings, as well as a fruit platter. His waitress, Nik Nguyen, told TMZ she worked hard for the money — and all Mayweather left her was some chicken bones and empty bottles.
What the NY Post and TMZ didn’t emphasize was that the entire meal was “comped” by the Hard Rock. “Comped” means complimentary, which means the entire meal and drinks were free. Anyone who has ever had a meal comped at a restaurant or industry event knows that the venue also takes care of the waitress and servers. Leaving a tip when your meal is already comped is not mandatory.
This is all much ado about nothing.
