Barbara Dawson

A Florida woman who was forcibly removed from a hospital lay in the parking lot for 18 minutes before a doctor readmitted her. Barbara Dawson, 57, later died of a pulmonary embolism (blood clot in her lung).

Dawson's ordeal at Calhoun-Liberty Hospital in Tallahassee, Florida was recorded by police audio and dash cam video on Dec. 21.

The audio and video were released this week to the family's attorney, Benjamin L. Crump.

The audio and 2 ½-hour video, which the family and media reviewed for the first time at a press conference, shows a Blountstown police officer arriving at the hospital.

The officer is heard on audio attempting to persuade Dawson to leave the hospital's emergency room.

Dawson sounds panicked as she tells the officer she can't breathe, according to a report on Yahoo News.

The officer -- or a nurse (it isn't clear who) -- disconnected Dawson's oxygen tubing and turned off her oxygen.

The officer held Dawson by her arm, and nudged her along as he led her out of the hospital.

Dash cam video shows Dawson collapse about 1 to 2 feet from the police car while the officer reaches for his car keys.

The officer is heard on audio saying Dawson is being "non-compliant," "faking" and refusing to get in the police car.

A nurse checked Dawson's pulse while she lay propped against the police car -- in obvious distress.

The cop and the nurse tried multiple times to get Dawson into the police car.

Finally, after 18 minutes, a doctor came out, said Dawson's condition "appeared to have changed" and readmitted her to the hospital.

Dawson died later that day. The hospital listed Dawson's cause of death as pulmonary embolism caused by morbid obesity. Dawson weighed 270 pounds at time of death.

Dawson's family is planning to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the hospital and the Blountstown Police Department.

Multiple agencies are investigating Dawson's death.

I hope they sue the roaches out of that roach motel looking "hospital".

  • 1/8

Sue them for removing a disruptive woman who had a history of acting a fool in their medical facility? Makes perfect sense to me. ? According to the information provided in this article, she ate herself to death.

  • Afiya

Something just aint right, why wouldn't she get in the car and what would make them say she "faking"? Does she cry wolf often? qtna

Anywhoo, I didn't get a ticket *sadface* I hope somone I know wins.

  • Ni Ni

Everybody involved needs to lose their job and professional license. Fire the hospital administration as well. Once folks start losing their livelihood they'll take people serious.

  • Angela

We are not talking about her so called "history". We're talking about the events that happened on the day of her death. She was misdiagnosed and died because of that misdiagnosis.

  • Str8tUpMenace

I agree!! This was absolutely ridiculous!!!!! Sue the shyt out of them. This is just awful.

  • 1/8

A 300 pound woman complaining about a stomach ache isn't a medical emergency; and when you factor in the number of times she had been kicked out of their ER for acting a fool, I believe the hospital did the right thing. If she had behaved like a civilized human being, maybe she could have convinced them something was wrong and she might have lived to die another day.

  • jeniefrumdabloc™

Man.... This is killing my buzz ?.... Sue everybody

  • 1/8

Yes. She had been kicked out of that hospital several times.

  • 1/8

I can't wait for them to release the surveillance footage of her acting like an idiot.

  • nucynu25

This seems really odd . I wonder if this a cry wolf scenario , eitheir way best wishes to the fam .

Symptoms: Chest pains, can't breathe. Please go back and read.

  • That’s Interesting

This is truly sickening. RIP Ms. Dawson.
She was nowhere near fat enough for them to rule her death caused by her weight. They're trying big time to cover their asses. I hope the people responsible are tormented at night as well as losing all professional licenses.

  • http://sandrarose.com SandraRose

She was in obvious distress and on oxygen in the ER. If the ER staff did their jobs she would not be dead.

  • http://sandrarose.com SandraRose

Kicking an obviously ill woman out of the hospital multiple times will come back to bite them. They obviously didn't examine her properly the last time she was there. Her condition exacerbated (worsened) because they didn't do their jobs.

  • AnonymousRose

who says she was acting a fool,? who says she was disruptive? how did she eat herself to death?

  • YOUR man chose BSweet #ohwell

Benjamin Crump is like Gloria Allred... hopefully he is making a difference.

  • Str8tUpMenace

    Cosign!!

Quick question, depending on the form or type of pulmonary embolism, aren't the symptoms usually visible for several weeks? If so, could that have been the cause to her multiple visits to the ER? Could that be the "faking it" these so-called docs & nurses be speaking of???

  • 1/8

According to Reuters, WCTV, and WJHG, her initial complaint was regarding stomach pains.

  • AnonymousRose

The dead lady story against the Pale people story, hmp, I wonder who the world will believe before footage is even released, let me guess????

  • Str8tUpMenace

I'm wondering if Ms. Dawson either didn't have medical insurance or her insurance was not up to "their" standards for them to remove the oxygen, and accuse her of faking. I'm just not understanding why no one diagnosed her properly.

  • Auditor

Damn sad...white folks are just heathens...but Ima also flip it and say that at almost 300lbs she helped kill her own self. Black folks think being big and eating/drinking any and everything is alright...it's NOT!

  • Auditor

With white folks none of that matters...all they saw was a negra...an overweight one with an oxygen tank at that...

  • Fendi

    1. I wish my people would stop hiring Benjamin Crump's illiterate a?s as their legal representative so they can get what they deserve and not what he advises them to settle for. The nxgga is an ambulance chaser. He is the Black, male Gloria Allred of civil rights litigation.

    2. Can we discuss the fact that the officer who arrested Sandra Bland lied in his report and is facing charges as a result of said lie, not for the malicious prosecution and false arrest of Ms. Bland?!. No one is being held accountable for her MURDER - not criminally or civilly. They're just going to continue lying and saying she committed suicide, like similar murders of Black arrestees haven't occurred in jails across America last year.

    3. I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired. Praying for justice for the family of this woman. May her soul rest in eternal peace.

  • CaramelDream

Right . . . Let's say she was disruptive because in America's eyes if a black person gets mad or disruptive then they deserve to die.

  • Auditor

Nowhere near? 270lbs for ANY woman is overweight...I'm damn near 5'11" and max weight is 176lbs...at my heaviest I was 155 and I felt overweight as I have a small frame...

  • Fendi

The only one acting like an idiot is you. You don't come here to objectively read stories and post comments based on the facts of these cases. You come here to be a racist troll who is a bigger moron than that 300 lb lady was obese. I would tell you to go to hell, but I'm already certain you reside in Hades.

Scurry your simple a?s back to TMZ's comment section with the rest of the troglodyte, inbred imbeciles who can't sit in the sun for less than 30 seconds without screaming "rape."

  • Auditor

    Ditton on #3

  • Auditor

    I wonder too

  • Str8tUpMenace

Just saying, I would "act a fool" too if I went to the ER due to a medical issue and was cut off from treatment, accused of faking, had the police called on me, was escorted out, and called non-compliant.

  • thrift.store.jungle

this is a horrible way to treat a person. especially by health "professionals" who are charged w/managing her care in their facility. bet money if she was a different hue she'd have been allowed to stay in the ER.

  • Fendi

As if there are no obese or morbidly obese white, Asian or Latin people. C'mon, now.

  • Auditor

People act a fool all the time in the hospital...this is probably why the police was called. I've been there done that...the police STAY up at the worst hospitals.

On one hand I can see it because I've been in the situation where the police needed to be called on a threatening patient MANY of times. BUT they also weren't yelling, kicking, and screaming saying they can't breathe either...

  • 1/8

One occasion, she wasn't a patient. She was there with a friend who was being treated for an unspecified reason. On that day, her behavior was so objectionable, she was kicked out of the hospital.

  • Auditor

I can only speak for MY kind...can't speak for them other heathens lol BUT yes I know there are other obese folks, but according to statistics we get it the worst for some reason (assuming their true)...

  • 1/8

How do you know the staff isn't black? Why are you assuming race is a factor?

  • Str8tUpMenace

Could the hospital staff had treated her friend the same way they treated her the day she died? Maybe they did and she called them out on their bs???

  • Auditor

Then why go back? Unless that's a small town with only one hospital...

I say if you think it's a TRUE emergency go in the ambulance...they treat your ass FIRST!

  • 1/8

    And maybe I'm Madonna.

In additional to her poor physical condition, she obviously had behavioral problems.

  • 1/8

When did I mention race? You're obviously angry and confused.

  • Str8tUpMenace

So she deserved for them to not properly diagnose her, remove the oxygen tube, and to let her die in the hospital parking lot???

  • Fendi

It is always a Black person "acting a fool." This woman had breathing trouble, which caused her to be under duress. Anyone who has ever been in a hospital ER, especially at a marginal hospital, knows how dismissive ER staff can be when checking people in. There should always be someone nearby who can check a person in and have them seen IMMEDIATELY when they don't have minutes to spare. That's common sense, but not common practice in these hospitals.

There are people who weigh twice what this woman weighs, but never had the issues she had. There are people who weigh 200 lbs less than she weighed and are in poor health.

Folks need to extend the care and compassion to others that they would want if they were ailing.

  • Use_Coasters_aka_Sol_88

    YES. & THANK YOU.

  • http://sandrarose.com SandraRose

    Google the hospital's staff.

  • THE OLDER SISTAH

I spent Christmas 2014 in the emergency room with my husband
who complained of chest pain. Every test imaginable was performed because he
has a history of heart problems. They could find nothing wrong but he still refused
to leave. I’m standing there looking at this man like he had finally lost what little bit he had, but to their credit they “humored” him. A heart specialist was called in and eventually they said he needed a procedure the next morning to put in a stent. I went home and before I could return the next morning he had a heart attack. Thank God he was already in the hospital and everything turned out okay but it taught me a lesson.
I don’t care how many times she cried wolf they should have listened to her. The hospital would not be facing hopefully a huge lawsuit and the loss of employment to everyone involved but more importantly this poor woman might still be alive. A damn disgrace!

  • Auditor

Usually starts in the leg and travels up...feels painful/muscle cramp in the leg. If you catch it in time it's fixable. About one-third of people with undiagnosed and untreated pulmonary embolism don't survive. When the condition is diagnosed and treated promptly, however, that number drops dramatically.

  • Fendi

I'm not confused about you being mindless, nor am I angry about it. You're notoriously messy, which is why you changed your name from 100 to 25% (after Roses checked you).

You and a few other Disqus trolls hop in Black blog comments not to interact with others or even respect the platforms, but to be negative and divisive. You and people like 'nom de plume' need to go drink Arsenic Ale and light dynamite in the desert. You're toxic. No one wants you here. And by no one, I mean not a damn body.

  • http://sandrarose.com SandraRose

The symptoms depends on when the clot began its journey through her body to her lungs. Every nurse has had to deal with patients who return repeatedly to the ER with vague complaints. I have never seen a nurse or doctor call the police to forcibly remove a sick patient. That's cruel.

  • Auditor

I agree...I know if you believe it to be a REAL emergency take your ass in an ambulance they will mess with you FIRST.

  • http://sandrarose.com SandraRose

Her past history at the hospital should not prevent the ER staff from doing their jobs.

  • SummerBaby

This is sad! ? RIP! My kids lost their grandma unexpectedly to a blood clot a few years ago & had a scare with their father having blood clots back in the fall.

  • Fendi

Everyone doesn't have easy access to ambulances. They are costly and in some areas, they can't take a long time to arrive, much like the police in cases of emergency.

ILY, but you ain't got all the answers, Sway. Thank God that YOU have access to what you need, when you need it, as I do. Everyone isn't able.

TMZ is notoriously racist. They don't moderate derogatory comments about Black people, so people like 25% can seek affirmation from those clowns and post as many defamatory comments as they want about Black people. It is like a mini KKK rally there.

If I don't like someone or something, I'm damn sure not going to waste my time talking about it or them early and often - or at all. But I ain't one to gossip... ???

I'm a very aware person who will never be "Ray Charles to the truth," unlike a lot of people.

Black people can't ignore race and delete Blackness. You would know that if you were Black. The fact that you act as though race should be dismissed in a social climate in which people are still being targeted because of race, lynched because of race, profiled because of race, shot because of race, beaten because of race, discriminated because of race (everything from loans to jobs to educational opportunities to housing), etc. is proof that you are not only part of the problem, you ARE a problem.

You being dismissive and divisive doesn't harm me. Ultimately, it hurts you. You can't close any doors to me, dear, because you're doing well to open any for yourself.

You should be tired of people repeatedly exposing you. You're naked as a newborn calf on this blog, yet you keep coming back to a forum where you really aren't welcomed. It really must suck to be you.

I am ready to close the Reading Room today. I promise. I'm "mfing tide." This fool is telling me I need not think about race like racism isn't rampant in the United Fakes of Amerikkka.

The irony of that dummy posting as 25%, which I remember them saying they changed their name to because someone suggested they are only 1/4 Black. Once upon a time, Black folks were given 3/5 of a vote because we were considered 3/5 of a man or woman. I see and feel the shade. I see the slights. I see the insults. I see the attempts not to engage in dialogue that fosters learning, understanding and/or compassion, but rather to criticize, demean and belittle. I can't and won't go for that. There are plenty of platforms non-Black folks can visit to promote white "supremacy" and pride. I will go out on a limb and say this ain't one of them.

No. I never said that, but you are over-simplifying a complex issue and you are letting your emotions cloud your judgement.

Diagnosing a pulmonary embolus isn't easy; especially, if the patient is complaining about a tummy ache. A doctor isn't going to test your lungs if you're directing his/her attention to your abdomen.

It's my understanding that Ms. Dawson didn't complain about shortness of breath until she was asked to leave.

It was my appendix folded up and swollen so they removed it. Went home and the next morning I couldn't eat and could not open my eyes to the light because the pain was unbearable. I called the ambulance and they told me it was a migraine but the hospital did a spinal tap and it was meningitis. They took me all the way to the exclusive floor and I couldn't have any visitors. They sent a crew in after a few days to ask me where I've been , if I've been out the country or around foreign people. The only place I had been for 4 whole days was that hospital. So clearly i caught it there. They still tried to blame everything else.

  • THE OLDER SISTAH

We sleep in the same bedroom and in the same bed. Lol. If I "go" before him I doubt he would wail at all, it's not his way. I am an extremely emotional person and he is not. The one thing we both have in common is our independence and stubbornness. He does like to play by his rules and I in turn will not play at all. I do believe that is why we have been together all these years.

    RIP Miss Dawson.

Because suggesting you drink something that doesn't exist and do something I know you'll never do is worse than dismissing racism.

As long as you continue to deflect from the wrong you do, you won't heal. As I said prior, your afflictions don't adversely affect me. Keep sending that negative energy into the universe and see what returns to you. You do the same crap on every blog - make negative comments re: stories about PoC and act as though you are "above" people who would buy you with the lint in their clothes dryers.

If you're so above everyone and the topics posted, then leave and stay gone. ???

  • 1/8

It's quite possible Ms. Dawson had an upset stomach and while she was in the hospital, a blood clot traveled to her lungs and killed her. I believe what started out as one thing, changed into something more sinister.

It appears some of Sandra's readers are convinced this issue is black and white, but there is a tremendous amount of gray area here.

The appalling the lack of professionalism and simple common decency shown by both the hospital employees and police in this case disgusts me. Rest in peace Barbara.

Ok, time to get out of the car and walk in to this gym.

  • socaligirl99

Someone commented that her original complaint was abdominal pain but everything I read says she complained about respiratory distress. If she was on oxygen obviously her O2 sats showed evidence of distress, people aren't placed on oxygen for no reason. If the ER had done a D-Dimer it would have came back elevated and the first thing they should have looked for is a PE. I also read that the staff didn't like when the patient asked questions about the medications they were giving her during past hospitalizations. As a nurse, I have no problem educating patients about medications and treatment because that helps with them being compliant and it's my job but I know some nurses don't feel like the patient should be questioning them because who are they to question a medical professional so they'll label the patient as difficult. I don't know this woman's medical history but I'll assume based off the fact she was viewed as a regular by the staff that she more than likely had other health problems that put her at risk for developing blood clots and that should have been ruled out before they tried to send her home. While the nurse can't overrule a doctor and admit someone to the hospital for treatment I know my behind wouldn't have been outside trying to get her into a police car and I'm sure the board of nursing is going to be looking into her actions.

I deal with facts, not emotions. Ms. Dawson abused her body and shortened her lifespan.

The question before us is whether or not she received the medical care she deserved, based on the information presented at the time, not what we discovered after the fact.

  • 1/8

My mother isn't obese and there is no history of blood clots in my family. So....

  • harley_quinn2.0

That hospital needs to be shut down. Everyone involved needs their licenses revoked.

  • Luv Pitties

    Lol @ shitting maggots?

  • Luv Pitties

So in a nutshell you're saying she deserved to die simply because she was fat? You are not going to assign any responsibility to how the staff treated this woman even after they had knowledge of her symptoms?

  • Yardgirl

If most people who are over the "normal" weight ( based on whitey's chart) ever saw their doctor's notes, they would see the word obese instead of overweight!! So effed up! R.I.P. to this sister.

  • Luv Pitties

And the answer is she did not receive the medical care she deserved.

  • 1/8

Stop being overly dramatic. I never said she deserved to die, I said her death was inevitable. I said, she abused her body and shortened her lifespan.

At this stage, any claims that the staff mistreated Ms. Dawson are unsubstantiated. Furthermore, when you are asked to leave a place of business and you refuse to comply, you are trespassing and breaking the law.

    Good Morning Roses.
When you thought this story couldn't be any more phucked up!

  • Too Many Colors

Ummm why this statement today @Wut? She went and got Tabasco sauce out way back on New Years. ...?

I disagree. I believe she received appropriate care for the information that was presented at the time.

  • 1/8

There are multiple police reports documenting Ms. Dawson's irrational and churlish behavior. Once, she even went to a daycare where she threw rocks at an employee.

  • sunni_daze

    To kill her!

  • Too Many Colors

My dad came up to the hospital. He was like "this the biggest premature baby I've ever seen.? She was well on her way to being 9 lbs too huh." ?

  • SameoleJ

I told my daughter, please don't have another baby.......you gonna mess around and have an adult next time. Youngest just turned 1 in June and wears a size 6 shoe and 2T clothes.....I told her once he is big enough to get in and out of the fridge easier than he does now....she better put a lock on it. He is a damn Hoover vacuum cleaner when it comes to food.

  • 1/8

She received the care she deserved, based on what was known at the time.

Do you know what a H&P is? Do you understand it's purpose? A physician isn't going to test you for blood clots in your lungs if you're complaining about a tummy ache.

I took a friend to ER, because he was complaining of severe leg pains. The medical staff determined it was muscle spasms.

I argued that given the patient's age, sedentary lifestyle and a history of blood clots in his family, it was possible his pain was due to something more serious.

Guess what? They admitted him and unfortunately, I was right about the origin of his leg pains.

  • SameoleJ

    Mine were 7 4, 6 11, 7 6 and 5 15 (and he was 2 months early).
But that youngest grandboy......wore all those newborn clothes one time and they were out of the door.

  • That’s Interesting

I don't think you understand what I'm saying. On my 500 pound life, they are undergoing surgery to make them lose weight because they are dying. Some of them have died when they do the updates, and they have been told that their life is in jeopardy. That's why they get the surgery. What I'm saying is that this lady did not COMPARE to them, but you keep wanting to compare them...

  • Just Keya

Shoot at least he wore the clothes. I HATE having tags on stuff and the baby can't fit it. smdh

  • Just Keya

hahahahahahahahah. I luh him! lol lol

  • SameoleJ

Oh no he didn't wear all of them.....but there was not one piece of newborn that he was able to wear twice. By his first appointment the boy was 11lbs.....I dubbed him Fatz and went and bout 3-6 months.

  • Nonya Bizness

You big dummy. So...don't ever take a long flight and not walk around, don't have surgery, don't get pregnant, don't smoke, and a host of other things. Like someone only gets a blood clot because it's hereditary. If they're only hereditary, which they aren't, why do nurses put compression socks and leg pumps on patients going into surgery?

  • Nonya Bizness

What does her throwing rocks at a daycare have to do with her coming to the ER unable to BREATHE? Let's stick to the day of the event now, when she was murdered. If I couldn't breathe and someone unplugged my oxygen and shoved me out the door, I'd act up too.

  • SummerBaby

Good luck to him. Maybe his sis can throw some money his way to to help with his apt.

  • Nonya Bizness

Right...because Tamar Braxton is also morbidly obese, and Doctors found blood clots in both of her lungs. It doesn't matter WHY the woman had clots. All that matters is the way she was treated. Pregnant women have died from blood clots. Is that their fault as well, for being pregnant?

  • Nonya Bizness

History and Physical, and why do you keep talking about a dog gone tummyache? She went in there unable to breathe!

  • Empress

I believe 25% is mixed. 25% Troll and a 75% Fool. Clearly looking for attention. It is obvious even to those of the most mean intelligence that this woman was mistreated and the law enforcement and hospital are culpable in her death. Hospitals are places where people go who are in distress, when you are in pain you are not at your most polite. Hospital staff and law enforcement have extensive training to deal with crisis and patients in crisis. There are few "calm" people in the emergency room especially when they cannot breath.

  • Empress

There are a lot of "disruptive" people in emergency. they are in crisis or watching their loved ones in crisis in life and death situations. I saw a white man storm into Emergency cursing and screaming because his daughter was there with a cut arm and the wife had called him. Was he arrested? No, his daughter was taken in immediately. ER staff get cursed out all the time, they are trained to defuse the situation and in many cases will put a seemingly healthy person who refuses to leave in a chair , give them some tylenol, water, hook em up to an IV and let them sit there for hours, if the person is fine they generally leave, if not they fall to the floor and the ER staff check them again and find out what's wrong.

  • 1/8

Barbara Dawson was a troubled woman who seemed to have a difficult time getting along with others.

Before her death, she was kicked out of a store, she was accused of entering an event without paying, and she even got into an altercation with a woman who came to collect her rent.

If she did complain of stomach pains I assume they will have the x-rays, sonograms, pelvic and other tests that were given to her to rule out issues in that area?

  • ShelleDC

The very First article that came out stated she was having a hard time breathing. That is before all of these other news stations started reporting it. They are trying to cover up their mistakes Hun.

  • Genia Gouch

    WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no other words....smh

  • 1/8

According to every news article I read, Ms. Dawson went to the ER because of stomach pains. A simple Google search will confirm it.

  • Genia Gouch

and this information supports what? that she did or she didn't deserve basic medical attention?

  • Empress

You do realise everyone's death is inevitable? If you go to the hospital with a headache and they have you dragged across the parking lot and leave you laying on the ground for almost 20 minutes and you later die of a Brain aneurysm is it Ok to say, "Well 25%'s head wasn't right anyway have you ever read it's fonts? Besides the cause of death was aneurysm." Does that excuse the hospital or police from malpractice and culpability? I can't believe I am feeding this Troll. If there was at least a reasonable argument I would assume this person was being true to their beliefs but I can't believe someone is really THIS dense, not on this blog. .

  • Sleepy One

If she was acting a fool, she had every right to. If I can't breathe and my oxygen has been taken away, I'll act up too.

  • 1/8

"Barbara Dawson, 57, died naturally from a blood clot in her lungs, which was due to morbid obesity, a preliminary autopsy showed, said Police Chief Mark Mallory in a statement."

  • SpillyNillie

WTF are you insinuating? You are one vile and miserable person...

  • 1/8

It establishes a pattern of disruptive behavior.

  • LibraGirlonly

At least he is there helping.

  • Empress

Exactly. If they were wrong in this case it is likely they were wrong in their assessment of her in ALL the other cases. This woman is dead it is obvious she wasn't faking it and any erratic behavior she was exhibiting can be from the fact she could not breath and was not being treated properly for it, at a HOSPITAL. Also is she was displaying behavior that might suggest poor mental health I would like to know if they evaluated her for that? Doubt it. They did not care because she is Black and poor.

  • ??TupacsFemaleDoppelganger??

    The families likely call them...

  • Lboogie49

First off HAYYYY Roses!!! I have been lurking for a few months and I love ya'll!!!! But I had to respond...and I don't know if anyone mentioned this but, being a healthcare professional (MRI/CT Tech) I know for a fact that a P.E. can happen to anyone...thin, fat, healthy, young, old or otherwise...

NeNe Leakes had one a few years back from complications w/the blood flow in her legs due to excessive air travel which traveled to her lungs & could have cost her life.

My BFF Mother, who is the picture of great health, looking 45 at age 66 had a P.E. after routine minor surgery last summer & almost passed away ...

so that dumb a@@ 25% or should I say 0% soul and anyone else who makes this about anything other than the bottom line - we are healthCARE prof. and we are trained treat everyone with respect!!!...

I have seen soooo many patients who are "frequent fliers" and "wolf criers" but my facility would never force anyone out of its doors in this fashion...
No amount of money can replace the loss that her family has to deal with now...RIP Ms. Dawson...

  • Empress

Excuse me but obesity, as you keep asserting in your posts, is associated with poor health. By your own argument a 300 pound woman complaining of ANYTHING is a medical emergency since in your reasoning she could die at any moment. Pain is signal that something is wrong in the body. If you have ever worked in ER or frequented there you will know that the FIRST thing they ask is "Are you in pain?" and Head, Heart, Stomach are considered very seriously. If you go in with pains in these areas they will get you in fast. Stomach pain can mean a whole hosts of life threatening conditions, especially on an obese person.

  • Str8tUpMenace

You still at it with this fawk-shyt?????

  • sunni_daze

Have you not seen his "help" in the past? Nothing comes of it. And best believe its more about keeping his name out there oppsed to really caring about the victims.

  • Empress

Sounds like this hospital is the one with the history of bad behavior. I hope in addition to this family's lawsuit that there is a class action. Thank you for shedding light on this awful hospital.

  • <—Doesn'tTalkToStrangers

    ????????

  • Empress

Sounds like this woman was not going to sit and calmly watch her friend being poorly treated anymore than she was going to leave the hospital when she could not breath. She sounds like a real fighter. I know if she had proper treatment she would still be here today!

  • Empress

They are scrambling now to build their case by making up stories about this woman but I think it will bite them again. I think by trying to shine a false light on her it will re-open other instances when they refused to treat poor minority people or gave them substandard treatment. This is one of those hospitals that has a fool or two in high positions who had staff meetings and initiated a policy that caused this woman's death and likely many more. She is probably just the first one to refuse to leave so she died on their property instead of at home, on the street, or in am ambulance at a later time. She lost her life but I believe in the long run she will save more lives.

  • 1/8

When Ms. Dawson was discharged, the staff had no idea she had a blood clot in her lung(s). Again, according to every article I read, Ms. Dawson's chief complaint was a stomach ache.

If Ms. Dawson had initially expressed symptoms associated with a pulmonary embolism and they kicked her out of the hospital without running the appropriate tests, I would agree with you, but that's not what happened.

  • Empress

I hope you also read that the coroner was never told or shown the dash cam video and has the video now. There are people who were reported, "Drowned, cause of death natural" and later ruled "homicide" after the coroner has ALL of the information such as they were pushed into a lake. Cause of death is not rigid, coroner can only judge by the information they were given. Do you think police gave them a report about her oxygen being cut or being dragged across a parking lot, or laying on ground for 18 minutes? They are in damage control mode.

  • 1/8

Ok, let's include the awful woman who came to collect Ms. Dawson's rent, the miserable people at the general store who didn't appreciate Ms. Dawson disrupting their business, and horrible people who insisted Ms. Dawson and her children pay to enter an event, like the other paying customers.

Poor Ms. Dawson, the perpetual victim. ?

  • Empress

If her chief complaint was a stomach ache where are the tests to rule out issues in that area, it takes quite some time to have a battery of tests done to rule out the many things, including colon blockage, that can be wrong when one has stomach complaints. What pain medication was given? Also why was she on oxygen for a stomach ache?

  • Mz.Capricorn

@25. Don't you have a Bathhouse to stalk???

  • Empress

I agree people can be so cruel and sarcastic. It seems she was treated horribly by others. I'm glad you have taken time to read your comments and correct yourself. Ms. Dawson was a victim repeatedly and now that they killed the body they want to dig her up and kill her character. I wonder if she did anything in highschool we should know about?

  • Empress

It's good to know that disrupting a business is justification for being killed when you go to the hospital because you are in crisis. Ya'll better stop cursing out Walmart staff!

  • 1/8

In response to Sandra's first article on this subject, I said, if a middle-aged, overweight, African American woman with a history of hypertension presented herself complaining of stomach pains, I would have ordered a full cardiac work up.

Women often complain of stomach and back pains during cardiac distress. However, let's be cautious. We have no idea what tests were performed by the hospital and we don't know when the blood clot traveled to her lungs.

  • Candance

This reminds me of my sister, she has a bad track record at the hospital because they never fix her. She goes in they say its nothing and send her home, she acts a fool most of the time because she wants help. Finally a few weeks ago same thing, then a dr did more test and found out she had a huge problem that required emergency surgery - two day surgery at that. Had THAT dr had not done anything and they sent her off as usual ( a couple of times required the police) my little sister may be dead today. So to go off of what the good ol MEDIA feeds us about a black woman is bull anyways. We don't know why that woman acted the way she did, but we do know she needed help that day. Really 270 is a big woman but not where they have to make her sound like Raspushia! #IJS

  • shaybytheway

I'm trying to figure out how this is relevant to her untimely death?

  • 1/8

You actually raise an interesting point. I think Ms. Dawson reminds of an acquaintance. He's a loud, ignorant, promiscuous homosexual with advanced AIDS. Everything about him makes me sick. He gets kicked out of hospital emergency rooms for acting a fool, all the time.

The last time I saw him, he called 911 pretending he couldn't walk, so he wouldn't lose his monthly check for a home health aid.

I think this story reminded me of him.

  • 1/8

It explains why they kicked her out and didn't believe she was in distress.

  • shaybytheway

Idk, given how ugly this situation is, you would think her being a difficult patient would have come up first. You may be right. Doesn't mean they shouldn't be sued to oblivion. This was one day someone should have brought their patience to work. I have been an uncooperative patient before. Somehow the hospital figured out how to treat me and send me on my way ALIVE.

This is why I don't like how American news is communicated. Something is missing from this story. What happened to make them go in and unplug her 02 and tell her to get out? Why did they think she was faking? Even at 270 lbs and morbidly obese she deserved treatment! Each story I've read didn't have that info either.

  • Gabbie Baty

You don't have to be obese to get a pulmonary embolism. Have any females in your family who could potentially bare a child that alone increases the risk.

  • 1/8

Not true. I've responded to Sandra many times.

  • 1/8

I don't care if she was acting a fool she has a right to get medical attention just like any other human being.
    _______________

She received medical attention and was asked to leave the hospital. Your claim that Ms. Dawson was denied care, is false.

  • 1/8

I never said Obese people are the only people who develop blood clots. However, obesity, poor diet, and a lack of exercise are contributing factors.

  • 1/8

    She received medical treatment.

  • Gabbie Baty

But that was your argument in regards to your mother and I was simply making it known there are numerous factors as to why these blood clots can develope. Poor diet, lack of exercise are one thing and some people are victim of circumstance. Just like some people develope cancer from smoking, some people develope cancer from second hand smoke, both still have a right to life. Regardless as to WHY she had the blood clot, if proper care were taken she still had about a 75% chance give or take of living through this.

  • chococherry

Let's hope this isn't you or your mom later on down the line. Now shove it.

  • Neacie Nation

Angela you obviously have no medical background...just like the cops. Obviously just like the nursing staff who has no clue how to triage a patient . All they had to do was take a set of vitals to know this women was in serious trouble. What she died of is one the most painful deaths you can imagine. What you said up there sounds heartless ignorent and dissmissive of another human beings suffering.

  • Neacie Nation

Okay next time you have a blood clot in your lung....lets see how well you "behave"

  • Neacie Nation

..and? does that mean she doesn't deserve to be treated?

  • Neacie Nation

    exactly.

  • Neacie Nation

Obviously not. They misdiagnosed this women and then mistreated her. There are no excuses for what happened here.

  • Neacie Nation

All I needed to hear was her diagnosis. There are no excuses.

  • Neacie Nation

Not true. This isn't a black/white thing. This is the way the poor are treated in this country.

  • Neacie Nation

I am a white person and I sat in an ER right in front of the nursing station dying of sepsis and a blood clot. They made me sit there 4 hours. I have seen white people thrown out of an ER. I have seen elderly people sent back to nursing homes only to die a half hour later. I know we want to make it about race all the time but the truth is..it isn't always about race. It`s about people in the medical profession forgetting why they decided to go into this line of work and letting their attitudes get in the way of their job. If you judge this women and make excuses for the police and medical staff at the hospital..you are wrong. When a patient says they are in pain..they are in pain. These people didn't do their job. A women suffered and died..there is no excuse.

  • Neacie Nation

That's BS..obviously your not a nurse. Making this about race instead of facts makes you look ignorant.

Yeah lets try to focus on facts other then race cards. Focus on the patient and what happened to her instead of making it all about you.

  • 1/8

Have you reviewed her medical records?

  • 1/8

Okay next time you have a blood clot in your lung....lets see how well you "behave"

  • 1/8

This story is specific to one person, Ms. Dawson. Please stay focused.

  • Genia Gouch

something failed her. Perhaps the medical professionals had a similar attitude to yours. Perhaps they forgot their roles and the oaths they took and allowed their personal prejudices and annoyances to become a driving factor in administering assistance. We are turning into such an Atlas Shrugged society. .

She received medical treatment. A doctor cleared her for discharge. Ms. Dawson worked herself up into a frenzy and exacerbated the situation.

    Thanks!

Well lets see sob , hypertension , tachy cardic....textbook..i don't need to see the records. a P E isn't hard to diagnose all they had to do were her vitals to know she was in serious trouble.

You have no idea what happened. You weren't there. If you listen to the dash cam video, the woman who accompanied Ms. Dawson to the hospital, confirms Dawson was complaining about pain, not shortness of breath. In fact, when Dawson was asked to leave the hospital, she hadn't been hooked up to oxygen for quite some time.

    Received !!

  • itz_justme

You do realize she died from a blood clot in her lungs right? She didn't die from being worked up "into a frenzy". If you can't breath, and the hospital is refusing to look further into your concern although you know something's wrong, you wouldn't get "worked up into a frenzy"?

It's not like they dismissed her because of her attitude. So even if she were the sweetest patient ever, if they gave the same level of service they did and refused to dig deeper into her concern, she still would have died of a blood clot. The only difference would have been the lack of a police presence in the ordeal.

  • 1/8

Go listen to the audio from the dash cam video. At one point, Ms. Dawson was hooked up to oxygen, but by the time the cop arrived, her breathing was normal and she hadn't been on oxygen for a while.

  • itz_justme

this doesn't change the fact that she died from a blood clot in her lungs. I didn't say she died from not having an oxygen tank. She was clearly saying "I can't breath" though...

  • 1/8

According to every article I read, Ms. Dawson's initial complaint was a tummy ache. The woman who accompanied her to the hospital seem to confirm that when she told the responding officer that Ms. Dawson was still in pain. How can a doctor diagnose a blood clot in your lungs when you are complaining about stomach pains?

  • itz_justme

Just because you have an "initial" complaint doesn't mean you don't have other issues. As I said before, she also expressed that she couldn't breath. It's protocol to ask other questions to the patients according to the medical records. Considering she's been on a breathing machine before, a doctor who is giving the proper service would ask her questions in that area.

There are doctors that go above and beyond and there are doctors that just go down a list and release you with no further thought. Unfortunately she met the latter. When she made her concerns known they weren't listening to just a normal patient complain of symptoms, they were listening to a patient that had been in before and gave them issues so they assumed this was a similar case. Because they based their level of service on her attitude and history rather than her current circumstances, they were negligent. Even after she collapsed on the ground they were still offering her sub-par care by assuming she was faking it and that "nothing was wrong with her".

I noticed in an earlier comment of yours you mentioned it being her fault for being overweight. Most health concerns people face are in part due to the foods the eat or the choices they make (smoking, drinking, lack of exercise etc...). Does that mean they also don't deserve the best care? It's not the hospitals job to determine the level of care based on how much influence you have over why you're their. It's their job to try to ensure that they can do everything within their power to address any medical concerns you have once you arrive.

  • 1/8

If she didn't have a history of acting a fool in their medical facility, they wouldn't have jumped to the conclusion that she was faking.

  • itz_justme

I can see you're not looking to actually have a conversation based on logic and reasoning and have made up your mind that they were not in the wrong in any way so trying to converse at this point is a waste of time.

  • 1/8

It's illogical to believe that you can live your life being a troublemaker and never face any repercussions. Ms. Dawson was an unhappy woman who started drama everywhere she went: the hospital, the store, in streets, at private events, etc. I'm sorry you're not wise enough to understand the concept of karma.

    EXACTLY!

That's what was reported. The media is wrong not me.
