Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters denies accusations that she wore latex gloves because she didn't want to touch black children at a soup kitchen in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The beauty pageant winner, who is mixed race, is seen in photos wearing latex gloves while eating with black children at the soup kitchen last week.

Twitter.com users accused Miss South Africa of being racist. But she and other volunteers claim they wore the gloves to "be hygienic".

"We thought it was the right thing to do, seeing as we were working with food," said the 22-year-old, who helped to prepare the food.

Miss South Africa

But a witness who was there said Nel-Peters was "peeling potatoes without gloves for white folks."

The community center that housed the soup kitchen feeds orphans and other vulnerable children, some of who are HIV positive.

Miss South Africa took to her Twitter account on Wednesday, July 5, to dispute the allegations.

"To everyone asking about the gloves, I truly hope that you'll hear my heart and understand that it came from a place of wanting to do good," she said in a video tweet.

isnt that the sanitary thing to do?? Wear gloves while handling food?

  • MadameMixi

The teachers at my daughter's day care all wear gloves at different times - feeding, cleaning up after them, diaper changes etc. People will make a mountain out of a molehill. So TF what?!

  • Cici

It's always something. Smh. CLEARLY she has them on because she is handling food. Anything to try to get Black people upset.

I'm a germaphobe too but her pr team should have had her remove the gloves first then do the photo opt. Even if it made her uncomfortable or whatever, she should have known the picture was going to cause a media frenzy. And Im sure she looked at the image before it was released. Some people just don't think!

  • http://batman-news.com Roderick2011

I don't like other people touching my food either and that's why if I am reaching into a bowl of some unwrapped food I will use a piece of paper towel, but I notice most of my coworkers use their bare hands so I try to be first.

    Ha,ha,ha!!!

  • JV

If you're handling food, I would think wearing gloves is a good idea -- not just for yourself, but more importantly for the people you're serving.

Now if she did that for one group of people but not the other then I understand the issue obviously, but this sounds like a "he said, she said" kind of thing to me.

  • http://batman-news.com Roderick2011

Ms. Vanilla: I'm not going to get infected and die trying to be politically correct...

Anytime North Korea captures a US citizen there's a lot of coverage. For one thing, North Korea usually starts the media frenzy on their own with their scripted press conferences and such. But the tourist who was killed in Greece wasn't killed by gov't agents (that we know of), or accused of a high crime or anything. There has been some coverage the Greece killing; I was reading about it earlier.

They have pageants every year. Sometimes black girls win, other times white girls win. It's like saying a BW shouldn't win in the USA because black people are only 13% of the population.

Did you hear what you just said? So blacks are considered minorities in this country and you feel that same way? There should be no standard of beauty, it's in the eye of the beholder anyway! However beauty( since there is a fake standard) should be all inclusive!

  • Tena

I don't think its even like that. There are other pictures from the event where she isn't wearing gloves while playing with the kids. She is only wearing them while feeding them. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/9fcfce207a7c8e8ea5b60742a25eb57a78f4a8f83c7bc522bf65a0372c093ffb.jpg

  • Miany

I understood what I said. What I am saying is I don't expect BLACK to be the standard of beauty here because naturally FOLK SHOULD LOVE THEMSELVES MORE. Meaning since we are the minority in the US we should expect them( white folk) to see their women/men as a standard just like we should see OURSELVES as the standard. I expect black folk everywhere to appreciate their beauty so when a country dominated by us sends a yt chick into the world to represent us, it makes me feel badly. It is abnormal for black men to crave "foreign" as much as they do and it is abnormal for a country dominated by black folk to see a yt woman as a beauty standard. I see your point but respectfully disagree.

  • Liz

You're welcome. My heart goes out to the family. Such a handsome educated young man

All volunteer's wear gloves when serving food. It's called food safety. But wait, is she white? I had no clue.

  • Dontgetdraggedhoe??

Did she wear gloves when she was fawking for her crown? No? Oh okay

  • dontgetblocked

I am always first or I don't eat none. I'm surprised by the number of folks regardless of race who don't wash their hands before they eat. It's shocking.

  • dontgetblocked

No story here. If she was wearing them for here on safety I wouldn't mind. Africa has a massive HIV/AIDS problem. She has to protect herself while dealing with young children who are unfortunately infected.

  • dontgetblocked

I think people are claiming to be mixed when they're not.

  • NicoleZee

You can't get HIV from simply touching sweetheart. Unless she has open wounds on her hands, she could have taken the gloves off to eat her food.

  • Ms.Vanilla

Yep. South Africa been white for decades..

  • dontgetblocked

She may have wounds on her hands. How do you know? Let's not act like any sane person wouldn't take precautions when exposed to a potential death sentence.

  • dontgetblocked

That crown is not worth getting the monster.

  • dontgetblocked

We all would. That's a dangerous situation. Little kids bite and slobber. I feel bad because they're innocent.

  • NicoleZee

Plenty of people go to African countries and they do not do what she did by wearing gloves. I think some people may not be aware of all the ways that HIV is contracted.

I've gone to HIV and AIDS seminars where there was food and HIV patients, no one had on gloves unless they were in the kitchen helping to prepare the food, that's all I'm saying. But I guess if someone wants to wear gloves for whatever reason, then they can do that but others may think they are foolish or just weird.

  • dontgetblocked

Well you fly over and play and feed kids with wounds, and who bite and slobber. It's not like we're dealing with adults. Medical professionals wear gloves. Why shouldn't she?

  • NicoleZee

It's just where they are from. Actress Charlize Theron is White, but she is also South African. Kind of like I could be French even though I'm Black. I'm actually not French, but just using myself as an example. It can be confusing, but sometimes people also identify through where they are actually from as well as or instead of their actual race.

  • Ms.Vanilla

Community chips is a no no..

  • teather

She may be racist after all, but I don't think the gloves really indicate that. this is a major stretch. For those who don't work around ppl infected with HIV, I can see why they'd be extra scared. It's OK to say, you can't catch it, but ignorance and fear will cause ppl to act differently. We'll see more of this lady and if she has those feelings, it'll come out for sure. Until then, provide the benefit of the doubt for her.

  • NicoleZee

Well, in that case yes, some kids do bite. When I took my son to the doctor months ago, one of the medical assistants said that another child bit her and the parent did nothing. I'm not sure I could have maintained my composure if someone bites me, even if it is a child.

  • ZRoJoTheLezBeyond

I concur. And in her case, I'm curious to know what she's claiming to be mixed with? She seems to "embrace" whatever side she's mixed with that gives her the strong Anglo appearance.

  • Ms.Vanilla

Yep... Like I have friends from Germany that's german but are black as a frying pan.

  • Ms.Vanilla

Which is a good thing if you're mixed with anything other than black. People are quick to say they are German/Irish, Spanish/Italian, etc.. But you never really hear anyone saying they are Black/whatever unless they look more black than the other race. They call us half breeds and that's a bad thing in the good ole US...

  • klejf nfjernfk

Africa as a whole has an HIV/Aids problem? All 54 countries girl? Bye to that monolithic fuckery.

  • the guest

She's not racist for wearing gloves to serve food to children.

    She better wear gloves.

I'd be critical if she were not wearing gloves and handling food for children.

Why should she or anyone be presumed sanitary to serve children food without gloves.

In the US, it's the law to wear gloves when handling food in a school cafeteria and even when volunteer serving at a soup kitchen.

    That's my perspective.

  • http://www.Samanthagwrites.com Samantha G.

People are so simple. Obviously she's wearing the gloves because she's handling food. They can't be serious ?????

  • the guest

Thank GOD arrests have been made.

Greece is the worst European country to visit. Greece is destitute economically, self-hating, and conflicted racially which makes them particularly desperate and cruel.

No one should visit Greece, especially not a black man.

  • NeverSurprised

Well, she's in South Africa, the nation with the world' largest HIV epidemic. In 2015, they had 7 million living with HIV, 380,000 new infections and 180,000 AIDS-related deaths. Those numbers are no joke.

    https://www.avert.org/professionals/hiv-around-world/sub-saharan-africa/south-africa

  • Duhhhh

the problem is that she was at the same center peeling potatoes, without gloves, for the white kids. So, why did she feel the need to put on gloves for the black kids

  • Fire & Ice

Agreed!!! Even the Asians are making their way there smh

  • dontgetblocked

You better go pull up the stats and do some research. Yes, the continent of Africa has a massive HIV problem. Men rape girls because they think a virgin will cure them. The mothers are infected by men and they can't get medicine or help. The illness is passed down to the innocent babies. The threat is real.

  • dontgetblocked

They're just children who have been infected. They're not aware of the threat but children bite all the freaking time. Even babies will nibble while teething or accidentally scrap you with sharp new teeth. Precautions are necessary, especially with children.

  • dontgetblocked

That story upsets me just like that 18 year old girl who was killed during road rage. White men are the most violent men in the world and they always have been. Black men like to kill their own.

  • 4RGSpot

Glad you said that because I feel the same way. I don't care how impoverished or cute and innocent someone looks. AIDS is nothing to take lightly.

  • Bonsai

She's damed if she do wear gloves and she's damed if she don't wear gloves. Either way I don't eat food from a yt person cause they just plain nasty when it comes to handling food.

  • BacktolurkingIgo

If she served food uhhruh she's SUPPOSED to.

  • Wile E. Coli

She's just doing the right thing here. Beats using hand sanitizer after every touch. Maybe she was also protecting them? But then again, some people find racism in egg whites.

  • 4RGSpot

For everyone who has an opinion about her wearing gloves, then they should STFU and go to South Africa and volunteer the same service without gloves. If she wanted to wear gloves for her safety then nobody should have a F'ing problem with that. AIDS is no joke and the slightest prick, poke or bite from one of those infected could expose her. Due to poverty, I am sure those infected are not getting the required doses of medications daily to keep the viral loads down which means they are highly contagious and can easily transfer the disease to someone else without being intimate. I would have worn gloves too. What's important is the service that was being provided and not why she wore gloves.

People focus too much on the wrong damn thing and things they should worry about and focus on, they could care less about.

However if you stop serving you take them off.

Why is her hair not covered if hygiene is an issue? You must visit South Africa in particularly Joburg to see why there is outrage of this magnitude. These white people have literally colonized and barricaded themselves away from black people in a black country for various reason but mainly pure hatred. If you think white americans are bigots and racist....
.....if history and current day has not taught you anything you should at least remember that everything is about race...

  • Allihave2say

It's hard to peel potatoes in gloves been there tried that. It is however easy to cut your finger while doing so and the knife gets tangled in the gloves.
The risk of HIV exposure is great there. On the other hand whites have always brought pestilence and sickness to natives so let her wear them.

South Africa is historically white supremacist and separatist.

It is a complicated history as white Afrikaans have ancestral roots and an indigenous language in a predominately black country.

Years ago I met young South Africans who were staunchly anti racist and working to empower black youth.

However, it was the black people working on the project who were evil racist to the extent of abuse toward the few Caucasian and Multiracial kids participating in the project. And the black people weren't all that kind to the black kids either.

White South Africans feel more of a bond with Black South Africans than they do with whites or blacks in America. South African pride traverses race and runs deep.

Long Night's Journey Into Day the documentary of the Truth and Reconciliation commission is pivotal.

This is true. When I was in South Africa a few years ago, us black Americans were dining with some of our black South African friends in a public restaurant and we started talking about politics/race. • chaisun

There it is exactly, this...what you're speaking is the basis behind the thought process of whites everywhere. If Black Africans want to have nothing to do with white Africans or feel the need to segregate themselves IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY they can.

An ignorant white South African once told me that Blacks in South Africa need to "get over it as Apartheid...which she seemed to think was a peaceful party of some sort...was not that big of deal and everyone is treated equally there" and I beg to differ. Its this type of superiority complex, disturbing mindset mixed with a huge blind ego that whites have which in turn makes Blacks not want to be around them.

Black people were not put in this world to passivley cater to racist white people contrary to what you seem to believe. They have created systemic racism, supremacy, bigotry, classism and have gained nothing but generational wealth by the deaths, backs and work of our ancestors all over the world historically and currently. The whites there have been very open about the fact that they don't want them in their own country, they have like I said created micro neighborhoods and their own language as a way to separate themselves from native South Africans. white African have ancestral roots no where else other than europe, and if they don't like the way that they are being treated there they can simply go back to europe. No one forced them to go there, they went there with the assumption of taking full control of a country and forcing the natives off of their OWN land. I hope the government figures out a way to replenish the land and do away with the racist 99% whites there. So again if the white "afrikans" don't like it then they can leave.

  • Mrs. J. L. Kidd

She is NOT a medical professional. She was not dealing with this children in a medical capacity such as a surgery or anything. Medical professionals wear gloves when they have to actually touch parts of your body that might have a communicable disease....such as a vagina, penis, anus, inside of the mouth, etc. Most give physical exams without gloves. They put a stethoscope on your heart without wearing gloves, they check your eyes without wearing gloves, etc. Please inform yourself before spewing ignorance all on a blog.

whites there are on a whole 'nother level. I travel a lot and the same can be said about whites in every country I have traveled to. Then to come back to this country and experience it all over again....lol.

  • chaisun

They, the media and other white around the world, glorify white Africans like they're some type of unicorn. As if Blacks don't exist there and if so they are they just as a side step, flunky an after thought.

  • Ain’t Misbehavin

Nel-Peters was “peeling potatoes without gloves for white folks.” bwahhhhahahha this sounds funny as hell

She looked like an idiot eating her food with gloves on.

Look if you don't like what I said, that's your problem and not mine. I don't recall tagging you in my comment to get your approval to post my opinion. The same way you feel you're entitled to speak your mind on my opinion, I'm entitled to speak mine on what I read. You can talk to yourself after this being I'm not go argue with you or anyone else i could care less about over my opinion.

Too damn much though. I was waiting on a white afrikaan to say something to a black south African in front of me. My brother said he spent his first few months cursing them out bc they were so nasty to them. He stayed for 5 years bc of his job but he barely made it. I think our whites are worse though at least you know who over there doesn't like you. Over here they hide it.

Thank you for informing me. I will be mindful of that whenables travelling. Just crazy

  • 2telldatruth

You know the ENTIRE continent isn't like that.....right? So why didn't she wear gloves while preparing the food? Oh I see it's okay for those "vulnerable to disease Africans" to catch something from her trifling azz but not the other way around? BTW......that's your break.

I don't know what kind of low-grade unqualified doctor you go to but my doctor wears gloves. Somebody could have a skin infection and the doctor touches it and passes it to you. I'm examined in sterile conditions and a certified and professional doctor. This ain't no third world clinic crap.

  • INDUSTRY GURU

    Very well said!

  • Allihave2say

    Perhaps this is her precaution.

  • Mrs. J. L. Kidd

Rarely is a general practitioner looking at your skin. If you have a skin condition that needs to be addressed, you would be referred to a dermatologist. This isn't third world knowledge or conditions. You probably work nowhere near a medical facility and no nothing of the sort. Your doctor probably wears gloves because you have a contagious disease of some sort. Quit telling on yourself on here *sips tea*

You're so ignorant, petty and childish. My comments weren't opinions. They were facts. Learn the difference and come back to me after you've obtained a college degree or two. Bye now.

  • Quitedeliteful

I don't know.... When I volunteer at a homeless shelter for the holidays they always make us wear gloves when preparing food to be cooked but you may be right because I'm sure in restaurants the staff aren't wearing latex gloves...

  • Nessa

Racism at its finest!! "Oh no!! These kids are dirty and exposed to diseases! Let me get a quick photo of me feeding less fortunate African kids"!!

  • therealjanedoe

People with HIV have compromised immune systems. By wearing gloves she was protecting the children, There's a reason food handlers in many countries, the US included, are required by law to wear latex gloves when handling and serving food. Protection. She's done nothing wrong.
