Shonda Rhimes

Shonda Rhimes is leaving ABC Network after inking a lucrative new deal with online streaming network Netflix. She will be joined at Netflix by fellow executive producer Betsy Beers.

According to WENN.com, the 47-year-old executive producer of hit TV shows including Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder has inked a lucrative new multi-year deal for her ShondaLand production company to produce new series and projects for the streaming behemoth.

According to the Wall Street Journal story that first broke the news of the deal, Shonda’s productions have made ABC over $2 billion.

Shonda assured her fans she will continue to oversee her shows on ABC, including the final season of Scandal.

“Our current shows will continue to thrive on ABC and ShondaLand will be there every step of the way,” Shonda continued. “I could not have asked for a better home to begin my career.”

Didn’t Shonda lose a bunch of weight? She doesn’t look like the pic anymore. lol But good for Shonda’s new deal. She has definitely done her thing!

  • YaYa

COINS COINS COINS…now I know she’s really gonna go all out with those sex scenes

  • Zeta Phi Beta 1920

    Good for her!
    *standing ovation*

  • Zeta Phi Beta 1920

    May be an old pic.

  • Kanyade

congrats! Netflix might be a better home for her.

  • Kim’s Original Face

I dont care about the other shows just dont mess up How to Get Away With Murder..that is all!

    That’s awesome she is transitioning!

  • Kanyade

that’s what i thought too. lol

  • V Dubb

Netflix is booming and Shonda is killin ’em

  • Kanyade

imagine if HTGAWM was on Netflix. the sex scenes, the swearing, the taboo subject matter, the non-awkward use of “penis”… lol

  • Diva_woman

Shonda better be careful. I’ve heard Netflix has a lot of debt and I feel like they just be throwing these checks and huge numbers around before they even have the reserves to pay. Every comedy special, series, etc you hear ppl getting paid tens of millions. If they go under it’s gonna be a mess.

  • http://batman-news.com Roderick2011

I am sure Shondra is getting most of her money up front.

  • Kim’s Original Face

    LAWD!!!

Nate Nekkid…yessss I am here for it

  • SouthernGirlAZWorld

So she isn’t parting ways then am I correct?

  • SouthernGirlAZWorld

    Great partnership

  • Noirluv45

I wonder why Shondra and other wealthy Black celebrities don’t partner together to build their own networks? There’s too much money in Black America for us not to have our own. We don’t even have franchises. We own someone else’s franchise, but we don’t have our own, e.g. hotels, grocery stores, etc.

  • i troll it like i see it

It’s probably about to get even better, fewer restrictions!

  • Renee26

Good for her!! Now what about this “final season of Scandal” phrase…is she ending the show for good??! I love all 3 shows

  • Renee26

Right…if she was there would be no remaining ties to ABC

  • Renee26

    Whew yes!!

  • MsPam

Because they still believe that white folks ice water is colder.

  • Noirluv45

Oh, can I steal that? Yes! After all these decades, you’d think someone would have a collective vision like other groups, but no. We still want to attach ourselves to them.

  • Nonya Bizness

No one cares about Scandal n Grey’s. What about HTGAWM? That’s my show. I love Viola. Seems like the entire plot of Scandal is Fitz hooking up with Black women. I don’t understand what’s going on with him and that new chic. Just threw them in the bed together like it makes any sense and it doesn’t. Just go to Vermont with Olivia already lol.

  • You Could Never

Because its not always finanically profitable. OWN was in a lot of trouble for a long LONG time. Years. More than 5. Others have tried and failed too. What legit biz person puts money into something that has a track record of failure?

  • Renee26

Just threw them in the bed together like it makes any sense

When they did that I saw it as them stereotyping black women as usual…she used sex to get what she wanted…revenge and/or securing her position

  • MsPam

You don’t have to steal it, it’s a old saying.

  • Renee26

the track record of failure is also linked to black being associated with “low budget” …it’s like people only support those shows when they’re forced to.

  • Nonya Bizness

Exactly. I did not like it at all. She was canoodling slick like with Olivia, knowing what she wanted the entire time.Fitz is still so in love with Olivia he can’t do anything right, so just get it together and be with her, not some fill in. I still see it in my head, and it wasn’t cool to me.

  • SouthernGirlAZWorld

Ok Sandra Sandra that’s the only reason I clicked this story. But good for Shonda!

  • You Could Never

Oprah had ALOT of support. One of the few. I think all of America, black AND white knew Ms. Winfrey wasnt going to put out anything low budget. Im glad it was able to turn itself around. It was underwater for so long I just KNEW it was a goner. Love Greenleaf and keep saying Im getting into Queen Sugar as soon as my schedule allows another show lol.

  • Noirluv45

    Lol. OK. Never heard it.

  • Noirluv45

Do you realize how many people have tried and failed and things, but never gave up? If one way doesn’t work, you try something else. OK, let’s say owning a network is a failure, how can owning a franchise be a failure. If we put our money and vision together like others do, we will not failure. There’s too much money in Black America for us not to own nary one franchise.

  • We Can Do This

Good for her. Her creative thinking is commanding top dollars.

  • Diva_woman

    Hope so

  • xenaD

ew.. #teamMellie Liv needs to stick with Jake def not the damn president like no. Just no. LoL

  • Mark mcharm

Bounce, tvone, are black owned networks but it is more lucrative to start a black owned production studio then you sell to the highest bidders be they abc, bounce, own ,tvone. that is how shonda rhimes got rich she left the legwork to abc while still owning all her shows.

  • Renee26

I watch her network for 3 shows those 2 and I even catch Fix my Life sometimes…

  • BacktolurkingIgo

Good for Shonda emm tho I quit only but one show. Best wishes to her.

  • Yoni7

    Way to go Shanda!
I’ve been binge watching Wentworth on Netflix. Been knew about it, just now getting around to it. Wish I would have started sooner. Orange Is The New Black, who?

  • Vegas1989

That’s an good idea. We should have our own network besides BET

  • SirVeil

Exactly! Once you start Wentworth and get into The diabolical Joan Ferguson…. issa wrap for oitnb.

  • NY_Chick

I am just catching up on Grey’s Anatomy. From season 1

  • NY_Chick

Wentworth is my show. What season you on?

  • Blak

Sandra, you are so damn shady…you know there are more recent pics of a slimmer Shonda and you opt to go with the more masculine, fatter ones lol

  • NicoleZee

She should have stayed with ABC. Most of Netflix’s shows suck. Orange is the New Black isn’t even good anymore. I wonder why she chose Netflix, why not HBO, Amazon Prime, or some other TV network. Her only good show is How to Get Away With Murder.

  • Yoni7

    Season 3 Ep. 6….I think.

  • Yoni7

OITNB is Nickelodeon compared to WW.
Bea is to Wentworth what Rick Grimes is to The Walking Dead.

The bigger networks make more money and have way better shows. I tried, but none of the shows on OWN are worth watching. I watch Iyanla every now and then though. It’s about content, making money, and having shows that networks want to keep putting their money in. Take Law & Order: SVU on NBC, it’s been airing since 1999, 18 whole years! NBC knows that the show will continue to get high ratings because of Mariska Hargitay. People “want” to watch each week. Most of these newer shows on these smaller networks will not last. If someone wants to act, I also think they should think long-term. It would be better to try to get parts with bigger networks and veteran TV producers if they want a solid career in TV. It worked for Mariska. Dick Wolf is a TV giant….Law & Order, SVU, and all of the Chicago shows. He is one of the reasons NBC does well and will keep making barrel loads of money.

  • NicoleZee

Exactly. OWN and TVOne don’t have good enough content, just okay. ABC, NBC, and HBO, for instance, will always make money and will always be around. Issa Rae didn’t go to OWN or any other Black network now did she??? Her show is not the best, but it is thriving on HBO and just got green lit for another season.

  • NicoleZee

Netflix sucks and so do their shows. I wouldn’t trust a streaming service completely. These silly people pay for Netflix when you can watch all of those shows and movies online for free on many sites. I watch most of my shows on Watch Series anyway, free links to watch and no commercials!

  • CakeByThePound

Honey, Queen Sugar will change your life. Open your mind to these other shows with smaller budgets. You will be pleasantly surprised

  • BeantownBabe

Her latest show still star crossed was canceled after one season. I hope they bring it back on Netflix

  • Lorenzo Chaps

Secure the bag Shonda. Go after the money. When ABC’s done using her up, they’ll terminate her contract or not renew anyways.

  • Noirluv45

You know what? I started watching Queen Sugar when it first started, but I stopped. I got bored. I’m going to assume it’s picked up steam since then?

  • Dahl

Why was I thinking the same thing??? ??

  • Noirluv45

Nicole, you broke that down very well. Thank you. I understand what you are saying, but I keep thinking that there is money in Black. There has to be a way where we don’t have to depend on others. We have too much economic power to have to continue to be slaves. Somehow, we can overcome.

  • Noirluv45

Yes. I sure would like to see it happen. Ugh to BET. Viacom owns it. TV One and OWN can do much better with its programming.

  • Noirluv45

    OK, I like that idea.

  • HalleMerry

Well, they would make more money if more of us supported them.

  • LuLu

Shonda continued. “I could not have asked for a better home to begin my career.”

“Begin”?! So up ’til now, she was just playing? LOL #thenextOprah

  • Tlowe89

I was scared their for a second, because I was worried about HTGAWM

  • Tlowe89

I would’ve went with Hulu over netflix. But i agree she should’ve gone with HBO

  • NicoleZee

I forgot about Hulu! I remember when they offered free movies and TV shows.

  • NicoleZee

Very true. But remember that Hollywood is dominated by White people, so I think that any person of color in entertainment has to all find a way to work WITH people. I’m not sure if it’s a good idea to just be a Black network or to just do mostly Black TV shows and movies because in cases like that, the content is usually not good enough and certain shows and movies don’t get or make enough money. I think that anyone in entertainment should just have a positive attitude about working with other people that can expand and enhance their opportunities. If I was an actress and I had a choice between roles offered by Dick Wolf or Shonda Rimes, which role do you think would give me a better career and lead to more lucrative opportunities???? Of course, the money and bet would be on working with Wolf. And if you have a good relationship with Wolf and NBC, more than likely you will be seen on more than one NBC show and will continue working long-term. Plus, Shonda has an attitude but doesn’t like when someone else has one. I couldn’t work with a producer like that and continue. I would end up quitting or getting fired!

  • Tlowe89

Hulu Actually Has A Package Where U Can Add Showtime And I Think Its Either HBO Or Starz. I feel like tv shows go to Netflix to die, and to hulu to possibly thrive. Hulu has more tv shows than movies.

  • V Dubb

Yasss it is!!! Proud of her!!

  • Stacey J

    Get them coins gurl!!!!

  • Noirluv45

Hmmm. Very interesting viewpoint. The funny this is that so many people imitate us. People love Black people in the sense that they want to emulate us. There is money in Black, but unfortunately, we aren’t the ones making the money. Everyone else is by copying us and hijacking our culture and everything we do. I do understand what you are saying though.

  • kekeb

    Congratulations ma’am!!

  • Lia Washington

    Congrats!!!!

  • Mrs. S. Kidd

You know Auntie don’t like Shonda ????

  • SirVeil

I discovered WW last year and went into this 3 day WW coma. Worked, didn’t sleep for 2 days and watched the first three seasons back to back. Paralyzed until it starts again!!
