Oprah Winfrey George and Amal Clooney

Oprah Winfrey offered to match George and Amal Clooney's $500,000 donation to the “March for Our Lives” gun control rally organized by the survivors of the tragic shooting at Florida's Parkland high school last week.

The Clooney's vowed to join the march and donated $500,000 for buses and other resources for the students.

Oprah also offered to support the students by matching the Clooney's $500,000 donation.

“George and Amal, I couldn’t agree with you more. I am joining forces with you and will match your $500,000 donation to ‘March For Our Lives,’” Oprah tweeted on Tuesday evening. “These inspiring young people remind me of the Freedom Riders of the 60s who also said we’ve had ENOUGH and our voices will be heard.”

George and Amal announced they are making the donation in the name of their twins, Ella and Alexander.

Students and faculty members of Parkland high school were in the audience when Florida lawmakers voted not to hear a bid to ban assault weapons in Florida on Tuesday.

"In the tragic wake of the seventeen lives brutally cut short in Florida, politicians are telling us that now is not the time to talk about guns. March For Our Lives believes the time is now," the rally organizers stated on its website.

Update: Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg have each matched the Clooneys $500,000 donation to the "March for Our Lives" rally in Washington, D.C.

  • Kayke

    "The Freedom Riders" Oprah?
SMH! Why do people continue to dilute our struggle?

  • Diva_woman

This is real, I truly hope some change happens soon. The NRA are bullies. They control Congress. I don’t understand how we can continue to see these incidents happen and do nothing about it. Somebody is gonna have to stand up to them.

  • MsPam

Oprah makes my ass hurt! Sit down please! Stop equalizing everything to black folks!

  • shun king

I wonder WHY Barry OBAMA DIDNT ban guns when they had control the house and senate

  • Whiplash(lacejagger)

So since Ophrah wants to intertwine black people in this situation. I wonder how she feels about the violence in Chicago? Hell in impoverished minority neighborhoods throughout the country? These crimes are committed with guns also. Some of the victims have been babies and toddlers.. although very sad.. did it take another school shooting for people to "march" and gripe about the NRA and gun control??

  • Elevated Soul

Libnuts are too stupid....Last I checked Mookie and them are being killed by all kinds of small caliber guns and they are no less dead than anyone killed by a rifle or assault weapon.....

Suddenly they are marching for the lives of kids but I didn't see Oprah or the rest of these fakes marching for all the kids killed in Chicago as well as Anyhood,USA...

These people are so fake and will politicize ANYTHING....

  • hottlanta

How does Dump feels about the violence in New York or Florida since he lives in both states. We all can see how he feels about the violence in Florida and he only cares about the violence in New York unless a white woman is being attacked by a black man. Dump ain't losing sleep over the violence in New York or Florida so why should Oprah. You need to be asking what are the public officials doing about the violence in Chicago and leave her alone. Are you responsible for the crimes for the states you lived in and when you move from the state are you still responsible.

  • shun king

That Chicago is the pink elephant in the Black Americans living room

  • shun king

whiplash is not an elected official and dont have the power Oprah and Barack has..those two people have turned a blind eye to a wanton slaughter

  • Elevated Soul

    Exactly.....

This is all about liberal politics. They don't care no more for those students than they care for Mookie and them in the hood, but they have never marched for Mookie and them.

  • hottlanta

Last I checked Steve is marrying his own daughter and having a baby by her. Why aren't the politicians in Virginia/other famous people doing anything to stop this incestuous behavior. #ME TOO being real quiet about this kind of behavior ain't heard nothing.

If AR-15'S weren't banned after Newtown, I highly doubt they will ever be banned. No amount of carnage will change anything.

  • hottlanta

So Dump is responsible for the thug who killed 17 people in his state of Florida.

  • Rodmilla De Ghent

trying to save face. I have a sneaky suspicion that not that many people like Oprah and its people she would least expect. burn as many bridges as her, ruin as many career and blackball as many people not only named Monique. it will be a reckoning when her time is up ala weinstein.

  • shun king

if barry obama had banned those guns this would not have happen

  • Whiplash(lacejagger)

But this post and my comment are about Oprah, not Trump. I mean since she brought up blacks, and donated to these kids who are going against, Gun control.. what's the difference between the gun violence in Chicago, and the school shootings other than demographics?

  • Oretta Grace Smith

Wow, sad as$ people in this world marrying family members

  • hottlanta

if Oliver North and his cronies that was running guns and /Iraq War would have never happened. Had that plane never went down in Tennessee he would still be doing it. But he choose another route to be all red/white/blue before the judge and get check direct deposited every month. You never questioned where Eric Prince, Betsy Davo's brothers get his guns. He is trying to get the federal government to pay him for his drive by shootings.

  • Whiplash(lacejagger)

I want to give you a high five so bad!!!!!!!

  • hottlanta

Nobody never asked Betsy Davo's brother Eric Prince where he get's his gun collection since he so gun ho to start a war.

  • Sally Wright McLinn

Wonderful! I am so proud of the younger generation for getting involved. This is THEIR civil rights movement. Who the hell goes to school and expects to get shot? Who needs to wear a bulletproof vest to attend school? PTSD, more mental disability. Keep it up younger generation, this is your time!

  • Sally Wright McLinn

Uh, have you seen Oprah's talk shows where she had mothers of gunshot victims on her show? Check out her archives, she did several shows about that, as did Steve Harvey.

  • Sally Wright McLinn

I don't understand why Oprah, who does more good than anybody in the world, keeps getting beat down by (her own) people. Give it a rest...besides, she can't hear you.

  • ?Royalty?

    Interesting ?

  • Whiplash(lacejagger)

A simple observation is just that. And make no mistake about this, just because someone shares the same skin tone, as me does not make them my "people". This is a blog, we all have our own opinions. I stated mine. Now you my dear can , "give it a rest". Shalom

  • Whiplash(lacejagger)

Girl stop! Steve Harvey and Oprah are two of the biggest pawns. I don't drink coolaid. To each their own, but not me. Shalom

  • jeniefrumdabloc™

    ???

  • Y’all Jealous Cuz I’m Prudy

I really hate to quote Trump on anything but did you hear when he said something about exposing all her secrets if she runs for President? I got a feeling a lot of wealthy people know something we do not and its really bad. I dont know. Tyler Perry, Lee Daniels and Oprah might be the people who Monique say they are. Everyone eles may be too afraid of their power to challenge them and that may be the real reason behind Monique being blackballed. Sometimes the "crazy one" ain't so crazy after all.

  • Kemi

Hope this marches and $ donations will not be in vain. Realistically, I don’t foresee the gun laws changing soon.

  • davine puddin

I had a family get killed at school a month after columbine. Ditty said he was donating money for my cousin funeral at a stop the violence concert the same weekend he was gunned down in front of students....did his parents recieve the money? Crickets. Did law makers come to his funeral? Crickets.

  • Kemi

Sorry for your loss! May your cousin RIP. It seems in this country, only certain population outcry is heard.

  • hottlanta

Why should you expect lawmakers and celebrtities to do what you need to do. The people who came to the funeral are the one's who are supposed to be there.

Georgia is so full of sex crimes with kids it don't make sense. What is the Governor gonna do about it. Haven't heard nothing from Atlanta celebrities but Oprah and Obama is supposed to solve the crime in Chicago while the Mayor and other public officials get a check from their tax dollars and does nothing. Craziest mess I ever heard of.

  • Soon2BWife

I wonder will O match the $1 Million Chance donated to Chicago public schools. You know the city where she built her empire and legacy? I loves Oprah, God knows I do but....seriously all the gun violence in Chicago and we haven’t heard a peep from her.

  • Stationarity

One difference is...there are already strict Gun Laws enacted in Chicago while there aren’t everywhere else. I am gonna guess she feels very strongly about gun laws.

  • guest

Fake a$$ O!!! I wonder if she she donated to Chicago gun violence....smdh

  • Elevated Soul

    Exactly...

  • Stationarity

She just gave a million dollars to a private school on the Westside of Chicago a couple of years ago.

  • stav

    Isn't she! Can't stand her.

  • stav

It's a private school Einstein, which means the majority of the student bodies parents can afford private school! What about the public schools that deserves the same curriculum, and advantages as the private schools?

  • stav

You nailed it whiplash, stay woke!

  • stav

And your advocacy she does not need or hear as well! She's a manufactured fraud, that has been programmed to conform to whites.

  • Stationarity

That is a good point but the original
Poster said she hasn’t done anything for AA. Private schools give need based scholarships though. Also, it’s really expensive to start and run a school so even if the parents can afford tuition, Donors matter and are needed. None of the successful majority private schools run off of tuition. The AA community needs black private schools just like we need good public schools. Black run private schools need assistance too. She also gave 5 million to Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta. It has tuition but its based on income and I know many parents that only make about 50k that send their kids there.

And Stav, a lot of the benefits of a private school are in the form of social capital, educated parents, and parents that are involved. If we wanted to turn our schools around in our neighborhoods we could. They teach the same stuff...taught at title one and private. Kids just have solid basic skills and are forced to take school serious. It was a better environment and more structured though.

And that is just the beginning of what she has given. Why do people have the audacity to think they know EVERY penny she has given?!? How would we know Every 50k check or 10k check she has written???

  • Unhappy American

Wow OOOOO? FORGOT SHE'S FROM CHI TOWN? ? I guess this the phucked up s#it Trump talking about if she's runs for president ??. YIKES

  • Unhappy American

SMH ? she BLACK BUT OPRAH BEEN OVERRATED AF ?

  • The One

Difference is Mookie and them are gang banging and living their lives ib ways that could get themselves killed. Innocent children should be allowed to go to school without the fear of being killed. Heck anyone should be able to go anywhere without fear of being killed in a mass shooting, i.e, movie theatre, outdoor concert, church service, etc. I don't think inner city people in Chicago or any other inner city in the nation should be killed either, but they are doing it to themselves for the most part. I don't think the two scenarios are the same at all. If I had Oprah's money I would try to do something to combat both instances but if I had to choose which one to work on first, it would definitely be trying to stop mass shootings of innocent people. That's just me though.

  • hottlanta

Have you donated? Oprah money belongs to her it doesn't belong to the world. Has Dump gave any money to Florida since he loves to golf there every week. Has he done anything about it because this is not Florida first mass shooting rodeo. What does his charity does again. Oops he buys portraits of himself.

  • hottlanta

    Being wealthy is so overrated.

  • Alicia.Ashe

Awesome. I’m from Chicago and I have no problem with this.

  • hottlanta

Have you heard from the politicians whose job it is to make their citizens safe. You not complaining about that but you complaining about Oprah. Then if she wrote a check no matter the amount negroes with a $2.00 balance in their account would complain that ain't enough. Dump has a hotel there what has he done. Other companies are there as well and made money what are they giving back to the community. Nothing but we blame Oprah for all the gun violence. Have you donated. Since when did Oprah money becomes Chicago money. You would think that Al Capone/Frank Nitti made money and they were heroes for gun violence how much are the estates giving back to Chicago since they are gangster heroes. Family living off that illegal generational wealth and folks don't dare say a word but wanna ride Oprah to death. Unbelievable.

  • zero options

I'm curious, what will the money be used for?

  • No difference

Umm have you heard about all the innocent babies, old people, and bystanders killed in Chicago from gun violence? The same guns that kill people in mass shootings. They don’t need to be in anybody’s hands. Let’s call this what it is, another example of white lives given priority over black lives. I will pray for that school, the deceased, and anybody who is a victim of senseless violence, but this is white America’s fight. They do the mass and school shootings, to each other. Oprah shouldn’t have given them a dime.

  • Summer

Oprah use to be beloved, especially by the black community, but coincidently enough since all the 2020 possible run whispers, all these negative comments Russian Bots and Republican trolls are starting to flood Urban blogs disparaging and insinuating she's this sinister woman. What has she done to turn the tide? Its my belief they want blacks to  be suspicious of her, doubt her. I noticed certain poster's wait for certain articles, then they all will rain down at once almost in unison with the anti Obama, Oprah, Hillary comments. Strange how that happens. Only difference more names are popping up. Could be the same person but who knows.
Folks better vote in 2018, vote your conscious, vote for what's in your best interest.

  • jeniefrumdabloc™

People give how they want. ... Like seriously folks want Oprah's to give her money in certain way. .. ? that's like my azz wanting to donate to my niece school and next batch gets mad ... Folks give how they want.. . Point is she is giving .... Folks do that shyt on here with Sandra when she gives stuff away ... To give is a blessing in itself .... How on earth do you swing it to a negative is beyond me.... Keep Giving Oprah... How you want and I'm sure she will .. It doesn't matter how you feel about... She will be blessed in fact thats how she stay blessed ... Always give... Look for nothing in return ... Expect to be blessed 10 fold ...

  • Ghost

I don't care who is donating or how much...Gun Control is a BIG problem that's not going away anytime soon. This has been an issue for YEARS!

You SHOULD be able to go to school and feel safe! The school shootings are getting more frequent...a teenager should not be able to walk into a gun shop and buy anything especially a AR-15! US gun laws are ridiculous!

the NRA is a powerful and RICH organization...and unfortunately these kids are going to receive a LESSON on just how much the law makers don't give a damn as long as their pockets/campaigns are continued to be filled with the dollars.

The shooting is still raw right now... emotions are high as burials are taking place (while Trump was golfing) I don't see anything being done.....Right now please take note of what your law makers REALLY stands for..get out and vote. Tired of all these OLD ASS LONG STANDING politicians who have been in office for YEARS. Do some research..don't just vote for them because they show up at the local mega church every voting season..stop giving them a pass. VOTE for change...seriously!

PS..The state of Florida rejects weapon ban while the students were on their way to protest...nip it right in the bud before they even got there!..smh

Oprah ---Charities & foundations she has supported = 29.

  • R Smith

People always complaining! To date she's shelled out around $400 million toward educational causes, including more than 400 scholarships to Atlanta's Morehouse College.

Oprah Winfrey runs The Oprah Winfrey Foundation exclusively. The foundation provides grants for not-for-profit organizations. Oprah Winfrey uses her personal money to fund the grants, which help projects of special interest to Ms. Winfrey, including education, learning and leadership development.

The US Dream Academy is a national after-school program seeking to work with children who have one parent (usually a father) incarcerated. The goal is to break the cycle of incarceration. Oprah donated almost one million dollars, and according to financial reports, she is one of their biggest supporters.

    What have you done lately?

  • Holler If Ya Hear Me

  • Blaque Mahogany

I have read the comments, but I did skim the first three lines of the one directly beneath me and I guess you can call me a complainer.

It really, really, really bothers me when people equate or draw parallels to the civil rights movement. The civil rights movement, in reality was a human rights movement. AA's were for all intents and purposes trying to obtain basic human rights and dignities. So to compare any other American "movement" to the civil rights movement is offensive. Idc. Idc. I said what I said. If you don't like it, don't "like it", but don't argue with me.

  • R Smith

I think this was in Atlanta in a low-income community and the majority of the students were black.

  • Mr.LeBrickJames

We have this crabs in a barrel mentality among many of our people. People always seem to want to find fault with those among us who are doing well.

Anyway, it's Oprah's money. She's generous with her money, and can spend it or give it away to whoever she wants. She doesnt owe anybody anything.

This is an election year and 34 governorships are up as well as other state-wide offices including Florida.

If the Democrats can keep up this enthusiasm through November then a lot of change can be made on the state level and because these governors will be in office during re-apportionment maybe Democrats can lock in a majority for the House of Representatives for the next ten years.

  • AnotherBlackGirl

Wow!! O, that donated money could have been used to do so much good in the hood. I'm kinda disappointed.

  • chris

People don't like wasting their money to lost causes. It is what is is.

  • chris

Gang violence is a much more complicated issue. Limiting what guns can be sold in stores sounds simple enough on paper. Nobody getting behind complicated problems especially none that primarily affect us.This psycho purchased this gun in a store. Where do the guns in the hood come from? Who knows but the government probably and they not going to address that.

  • R Smith

In 1996, Australia passed the National Firearms Agreement after a mass shooting in Tasmania in April of that year. In that incident, a 28-year-old man, armed with a semi-automatic rifle, shot and killed 35 people, and injured 18 others, in what was known as the Port Arthur Massacre.

Under the 1996 law, Australia banned certain semi-automatic, self-loading rifles and shotguns, and imposed stricter licensing and registration requirements. It also instituted a mandatory buyback program for firearms banned by the 1996 law.

During the buyback program, Australians sold 640,000 prohibited firearms to the government, and voluntarily surrendered about 60,000 non-prohibited firearms. In all, more than 700,000 weapons were surrendered, according to a Library of Congress report on Australian gun policy. One study says that the program reduced the number of guns in private hands by 20 percent. In 2002, Australia further tightened gun laws, restricting the caliber, barrel length and capacity for sport shooting handguns.

And, in Japan if they want to own a gun, they must attend an all-day class, pass a written test, and achieve at least 95% accuracy during a shooting-range test.

"What has she done to turn the tide?"

To whom does this GROWN WOMAN owe an explanation to for living her own life and being good to others in the way SHE SEES FIT? Internet trolls, etc will continue to exist. I applaud her for letting them spin their wheels while she continues to live and grow. She has nothing to prove. Her ACTIONS have proven it. Why is Chicago shootings Oprah's problem but the shooting in Florida is America's problem. Last time I saw it Chicago is in America.

  • Goodii2Shoes

They were waiting for the opportunity to gain ....

  • Kayke

Nobody beats the NRA....especially some mulatto from Chicago. Please stop acting as if you don't know how laws are enacted and how much the NRA has invested in this very government.

  • chris

That's good. I don't personally have a problem with Oprah but many black people feel vulnerable and leaderless so we have higher expectations from our elite. White people have the government and laws to support them, we don't. So when we see this and we don't see white celebrities reaching out like that we feel some type of way. Not that she can't do both but again it's the optics. If black people heard more from hey on our issues there would be no hate.

  • Goodii2Shoes

LOL,,,now would be a GREAT time to teach ur children etiquette ,self respect & how to respect others, o& sexual chastity/abstinence & encourage graduation instead of dating.....

&how about demanding ur schools have some damn security??????

The assault rifle he purchased legally truly wasn't the problem.

I think all of US could do more :o)

  • Evillene

Gun violence in Chicago is part of a commercial enterprise. Chicago is a city with ineffective leadership and corrupt law enforcement. Only Chicago can help Chicago. Oprah's donations would only line the pockets of the bad actors in Chicago.

Yes I considered the innocent people that have been killed in senseless gun violence which is why I said they are doing it to themselves "for the most part." That was me saying that I understood that innocent people get killed in the crossfire of gang violence AND I also said I don't think that inner city people should get killed either, or did you conveniently not see that part? My point is that if you have people who are killing themselves intentionally FOR THE MOST PART through gang violence on one hand and innocent people who are just going to school, the movies, church, night clubs, outdoor concerts, etc. getting killed in mass shootings on the other hand I would think that you'd tackle the instances of mass shootings first while also realizing that the gang violence shootings should be addressed. That, once again, is just me though.

There's nothing unique about the Civil Rights movement since MLK JR admitted that he borrowed his nonviolent tactics from Ghandi.

It's not about the movement....it's about the plight that led to the movement .....no one else has had to prove they were human to optain basic and inalienable human rights. There is nothing discriminatory about guns and the violence they cause. Everytime someone wants to get buzz for their 'movement' they liken it to the most opressive plight ever, ours.....it's disrespectful.....everything else pales by comparison.

  • Latisaj

    I can't with her ever!!

  • dontgetblocked

Hmmm. Did I miss the 500,000 donation she made to the Black Lives Matter movement?

  • dontgetblocked

She's an idiot. She thought she was from South African and built a school there. Naw! Most blacks are from West Africa because that was easiest port to access for the slave trade. Build some schools in West Africa or how about Mississippi where her country azz is from.

  • dontgetblocked

We need some receipts. All we see is her supporting and donating to white people and white causes.

Especially since hundreds of bodies are piling up in Chicago with tough gun laws in place.

  • Mac Jones

They remind her of the freedom riders in the 60s??? Already??? Amal is a male and technically only married to Clooney as a peace agreement between jews and arabs. So if they donated and she donated then the reality is this is a setup to get people peacefully to give up their guns before WW3 breaks loose.
