Convicted murderer Cyntoia Brown is a free woman. She was released from prison today, Aug. 7. after Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam commuted her life sentence in January. Brown was a 16-year-old runaway when she fatally shot real estate agent John Allen, 43, in the back of the head while he slept in 2002. She was sentenced to life in prison in 2004.

Brown, 32, was released from the Tennessee Prison for Women after serving 15 years of her life sentence.

Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian-West and Rihanna rallied support for Brown on social media.

Brown was often referred to as a “sex trafficking victim”, even though she recruited friends to return to her victim’s home to rob him after shooting him in the head.

Brown, who was a runaway and drug addict, claimed she was forced into prostitute by an older boyfriend, but he was later cleared by investigators.

Brown won’t leave prison empty handed. Last month, Netflix announced it had acquired the rights to her story, which means she will receive a nice check from the streaming giant.

Brown will remain on parole for 15 years. She will be sent back to prison if she violates the terms of her parole.
