Toni Braxton broke Instagram when she posted a photo of her hysterectomy scars over the weekend. The mother-of-2 is seen in her bathroom mirror, wearing a skimpy jersey and black panties. The 51-year-old pop singer captioned the image:

"Embracing my WHOLE body...hysterectomy scars and all...@orangetheory making me feel 29 again! [eye] love me some me!"

What is a hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus, aka the womb, for medical or cosmetic reasons. The uterus is part of the biological woman's reproductive system. It is where a baby grows when a female is pregnant.

Why is a hysterectomy performed?

A hysterectomy is performed for medical reasons when a woman's quality of life is affected by cancer or painful medical disorders such as endometriosis and uterine fibroids.

Painful medical conditions that may result in a hysterectomy include:

  • Chronic vaginal bleeding
  • Uterine cancer
  • Cancer of the cervix
  • Cancer of the ovaries
  • Fibroids
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Uterine prolapse (when uterus drops into vagina)
  • Endometriosis (painful condition when lining grows outside uterus)
  • Adenomyosis (uterus lining grows into the uterus muscles)
  • What are the types of hysterectomies?

    1. Partial hysterectomy
When the surgeon removes a part of the uterus but leaves the cervix intact.

    2. Total hysterectomy
The surgeon removes all of the uterus, including the cervix. Women who have undergone total hysterectomies no longer need Pap smears since the cervix is gone.

    3. Hysterectomy and Salpingo-Oophorectomy
The surgeon removes the entire uterus, including the cervix and one or both of the ovaries and Fallopian tubes.

    How is a hysterectomy performed?

Surgeons can remove the uterus in a variety of ways.

Laparoscopic Hysterectomy - the surgeon inserts a long tube into small incisions below the bikini line. A tool at the end of the tube cuts up the uterus into small pieces and the pieces are suctioned through the tube. Recovery time is about 1-2 weeks. This appears to be the surgery Braxton had done based on the small scars.

Abdominal Hysterectomy - the surgeon removes the uterus through a large gaping incision in the abdomen above or below the bikini line. This was once considered major surgery. Down time is longer than a laparoscopic hysterectomy, and the pain is more intense.

Vaginal Hysterectomy - when your uterus is removed through an incision in your vagina. Most women decline this option.

What are the risks of hysterectomy?

Risks are rare, but every surgery carries risks from blood clots to serious infections. Follow-up with your doctor is important, as are following post-op instructions and taking all medications on time.

it didn't take all of that to show scars.she had a removal of uterus, which does not require her to show her breasts. she just wants to be seen.

    • sherri2016

Thankfully my scars are 2 little dots that you can barely see

    • Renee26

      The thirst is real

    • sherri2016

I think she even darkened the spots so they can show because you can barely see mine

    • Renee26

Her scar is minimal compared to mine...it may be that filter though.

I still wear crop tops regardless. I embrace my scars and side stretch marks

    • WhoKnew

The thirsty drama queen is on fleek again.

    • Moscows Bitch

Love me some Toni but I think she is too old for this.

    • Renee26

Naw it's a different type of scar. How they take ya uterus thru 2 small dots?? ?

Mine is like hers, from belly button to pelvic line but I've seen them horizontal along the pantyline too

    • Blaque Mahogany

      As you should...

    • Ni Ni

She is a beautiful, but pitiful and desperate woman. She's as effed in the head as her sister. Old women supposed to teach the young women, not stoop down to their poor choices. On top of that, she has sons who have become accustomed to seeing their mother half naked all the time. I'm sure they will be affected by this at some point in their life, if not already. I wish people would not be afraid to grow up mentally nowadays.

    • Blaque Mahogany

I don't see any scars. But, her body looks great.

    • Renee26

She's gorg and doesn't even have to do all that... Baby must not be treating her like a queen.

    • SpiceGirl
    • sherri2016

I have 2 small dots they snipped it laparoscopy and pulled it out my vagina no cuts at all

    • sherri2016

Don't know how long it was that you had yours but it may have been a while mines less than 10 years so I'm assuming its to keep from having to cut up your body

    • free

the two little dots are the scars where they go in with the lil robot thingy. they don't maul you like they used to do in the past. attention-seeking smh/lol.

    • Virgoqween

Those little brown dots or the “eyes” they call it after a hysterectomy.

    • iWasteTime

      She is still gorgeous!
She know good and damn well she wanted to show that bawdy!

    • free

I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING LOL!

    • Kanyade

Scars? Where? Oh, those dots from laparoscopic. Um okay.

How to feel liberated (from minimal scars from surgery) in 2019: Post a scantily clad pic (selfie) of yourself on Instagram.

    • Renee26

It's amazing the things they can do. I'm imagining a laser chopping it up like described above ?. Yeah, I had the abdominal proceedure in 2012

    • Renee26

      Chile I was mutilated in 2012 ?

    • Renee26

      Ok!

    • Coy little wink

      Obey yo thirst Toni...

So yea I saw Hustlers yesterday and it was actually pretty good! Idk about Oscar worthy but JLo's acting was better than I recall. She killed her dance scene lawd! Cardi stole the scenes she appeared in as expected but they were few. The fashions...OMG the furs ?. It was a tale of friendship and sisterhood and ultimately greed.

    • sherri2016

Thats crazy I had no recovery time no pain nothing i would sue if i was you because for it to been that recent they could've done it the way they did mine my 2 dots are covered by my hair and even if i cut it you still could barely see it that is crazy they did that to you

    • Facts and Receipts

We didnt make it out this weekend. Perhaps next. EVERYONE said it was good.

    • angelpat2812

I mean, just why?! You're 51yrs old, beautiful, successful, have a whole family...so why the need for validation? I will always believe that no man, woman or child should get, or can handle the praise and glory that should only go to "God." These people have a constant need to receive admonition and praise once they start getting it. It's not about the "thirst," but the obsessive need to be glorified, worshiped and praised over and over again. Well sorry, no one gets that kind of praise from me but "God!" So, just have several seats!

    • Whiplash(lacejagger)

Toni looks great.. but hysterectomy and tummy tuck scars are similar. Those are scars from a tummy tuck. Nice try Toni!

    • WiseGui

Toni is sexy af. She knows it and so do we. At 51 she still got it.

My concern is that she has 2 teenage sons. And she’s posting pictures of her titties out and in her panties. This is opening the flood gates for her sons to be ridiculed and bullied. The sons will be inundated with these photos and jokes of how their peers “wanna smash” and how “she can get it”.

Is she even thinking about their well being or is it all about her and her quest for thirst quenching comments.

This is how women go astray when there is no prominent male figure in the household. I wouldn’t be surprised if “Baby” encouraged her to post this mess.

    • SaltineCrackers

      Instagram is the devil.

    • Carrington

I don't understand why people think Toni Braxton isn't going to continue to be Toni Braxton. She's been naked since the late 90's. Why are people acting like this is BECOMING a thing as opposed to CONTINUING that thing?

Toni Braxton, at 51, is under no obligation to suddenly BECOME a role model because the reality of that is that the girls who are influenced by celebrity are neither following, nor influenced by 51 year olds.

Toni is doing what CELEBRITIES do, not grandmothers, not school teachers, not 51 year old secretaries - she's staying relevant because her JOB requires that. Toni Braxton's core fan isn't trying to replicate this... at least I HOPE your 40-52 year old post office workin' a$$es ain't trying to give social media one tiddy.

I ain't mad at Toni because she's showing women of a certain age that they can still be desirable and sexy past 40. Past 50. She is NOT influencing 19 year olds, Cardi B is... but it's the JOB of Ms. Glayrene their school counselor who walks into the building looking like she's running the school SYSTEM, Maxine - their aunt, Miss Shirlene, the nosy lady upstairs, Laquenthia - their mammy. Not Toni Braxton.

Why is PART of a tiddy too much for people and why is there a belief that her boys have something to be traumatized about? She's been naked their entire lives and her children understand that she's a celebrity. Nobody questions how an actresses children are being affected by their mothers doing nude scenes COMPLETELY naked. Why are we not giving Toni Braxton, and her children, enough credit to assume that she's had a conversation with them about what her job is as a celebrity - and that they completely understand because that's ALL they know. "OUR" kids may not understand it because Y'ALL work at a hospital - but this ain't that big of a deal to children of celebrities. I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt because I honestly believe that if she TRULY felt that her children were "traumatized" she wouldn't do it.

PS: That right tiddy is looking right.

    • Dee

Dayum Toni, you are that thirsty!?!?!

    • Ni Ni

She doesn't care and has poor judgement. Also, Toni has been on this same train since before Baby.

    • currvalicious

I love her. She's a classic beauty & looks great. I can not see any scars. But at the same time was surprised she had a hysterectomy (back in 2011). Glad she went back short. #teamshortcut @thecutlife...?
Ironically as I'm typing this post, "Another Sad Love Song" comes on the radio...

    • Blaque Mahogany

Short cuts just seem like so much maintenance. You can never just have an off day.

    • Rayne

Sandra and y’all, after I drop this baby can I get this? A girl is tired of periodts ? and ain’t no mo chillun coming. Another question...If I get the total hysterectomy can my husband still “feel” stuff??

    • oshh16

As someone who has done long, short, med length styles, short cuts are A LOT more maintenance..... then a trips to barber for fade outs in the back, outter perms every two three weeks, more color, constantly trimmed etc.
      It be cute but yeah.

    • Ni Ni

Congrats on the pregnancy?. Iont know about the other stuff.

    • Whiplash(lacejagger)

      Mine do.

    • Rayne

Thanks. I’m bout to drop next three weeks. I’m still working (or hardly) carrying files like I’m busy but chilling in my kitten heels lmao

    • Fire & Ice

They are A LOT of maintenance. If I can't pull my hair back into a ponytail, it'll be a no for me!

    • The Chosen 1.

thank you. that was just unnecessary

    • currvalicious

This is as very informative medical minute. One which I can most certainly relate to. I haven't had a hysterectomy, am not considering one, however do suffer from fibroids that have now began to affect my quality of life. So idk what I'll do -eventually down the line. As a hysterectomy would be my total last resort. Thanks Aunt Sandy.

    • The Chosen 1.

      you have never lied.

    • WhoKnew

Exactly. She be doing the most and like you said it's unnecessary.

    • Ni Ni

      Lol

    • OvertheMississippi

I have hysterectomy scars. BIG D@MN DEAL!!

    • Chapter29Chick

Awww it’s sad that women have to go through this. It’s like our bodies turn against us. Wishing Toni one of my favorite singers a speedy recovery & Hoping that she makes some new music.

    • free

the process has evolved; minimal scar and pain. i bled 24/7, 365 due to fibroids. i didn't realize it was the broids or i would have done it sooner. since i planned on having no more kids, i was like REMOVE IT! i kept the ovaries so that it did not trigger menopause and all i can say is...I'S FREE!!!

    • sherri2016

It was the best decision I've ever made i rarely have migraines that i used to have all the time I'm still anemic because my body doesn't absorb iron no more fibroid issues and even tracking my cycle no more worrying about accidents do to heavy bleeding and since i was done having my 3 kids it was no other option for me unless you haven't had kids yet and want to i would consider

    • Passion

Been there done that due to stage four endometriosis and endo pelvic masses! 7 major surgeries because endo webbed everything in one big mass! Totally understand!

    • Ghost

Who in the heck would get a hysterectomy for cosmetic reasons????

    • currvalicious

Thanks Free. I have I small child. I would want to keep my ovaries as I don't want to go into early menopause. You ladies are really giving me something to consider -seriously. I had an accident at work couple weeks ag due to a heavy cycle. Also I've taken to having iron infusions due to the blood loss during cycles. So it has been a dozy for me, to say the least. The funny thing is, fibroids I've had fibroids since my 20's, & have never had an issue with them until about the fall of 17'.

    • Mz_Opinionated

This is depressing...We as black women have so many fertility issues. Fibroids, Infertility, Endometriosis, PCOS...It never ends...

    • Mz_Opinionated

Oh Goodness ? Did you happen to have any children?

    • currvalicious

To have a short cut is to love it & be committed. It can be low maintenance depending on the cut, & it has to be a good cut. I tend to leave mine full & longer at & around the crown (for styling options). But I've been short most of my adult life (except for the occasional mid length bob).

    • Mz_Opinionated

If you had your baby already. I would consider it...It's a lot and we suffer so much behind it. It's just so common among black women! It's startling!

    • Mz_Opinionated

WOW! WOW! That's almost like...everything is gone.

    • MsPam

I guess Birdman is giving Lil Wayne more attention than he’s giving Toni.

    • currvalicious

      Good for you. Be proud??

    • currvalicious

Sounds like the abdominal procedure is how it was first done, pre all these modern techniques.

    • currvalicious

I think Baby is more of her benefactor than anything else.

    • currvalicious

Yes we do. You're right about that. Reading you alls posts really is encouraging. Before this, I've never considered it as an option for me. But, I'm definitely going to do my research. I love this community in the garden. Thank you.

    • Mz_Opinionated

You take all the time you need as it is a MAJOR decision. But try not to suffer too long my love ?

    • Renee26

      Mine was done in 2012

    • Renee26

      Absolutely... Issa business relationship

    • IyanlaVanzantoftheInterWebs

She looks GOOD! I have those scars too.. Having laparoscopic surgery does that to ya

    • IyanlaVanzantoftheInterWebs

Where did you read she did it for cosmetic purposes?

    • IyanlaVanzantoftheInterWebs
    • Stanley’s Mood

I feel her pain. I just had the Abdominal Hysterectomy and Salpingo-Oophorectomy a little over a year ago. They took out my cervix, ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes, EVERYTHING!!! Thank God I was able to freeze my eggs. I was out of work for 3 months. The endo caused everything to clump together. My surgery was almost 5 hours. They had to get through so much just to find/reach my organs.

    • Ghost

Sandra notes above in her write up that women get hysterectomies for cosmetic reasons! Never heard of this...that’s what I asked the question. Please name one person who has gotten a hysterectomy for cosmetic reasons??? ?????

    • ThisIsWhat43LooksLike

Me too hunty and I don’t give a flip about it because I AM ALIVE!! Praise God ?????
      #cancersucks

    • Neva RuthLess

We need to take our health seriously. Could it be also due to lifestyle? Black women need to work out more and eat right to eliminate stress. This could help a ton.

    • Not Today

      Same

    • Not Today

Yes I'm not Sandra, but I have five kids and did the surgery after the fifth. My sex life with my husband is awesome. No periods, no more kids.....life

    • Mz_Opinionated

Well...freezing your eggs. What does that mean? It doesn't sound as though you can hold the baby...You mean for like a surrogate? Wow...I am so, so, so sorry you had to deal with that. Endometriosis is the devil.

    • Rayne

Thanks. I’m considering it. Ppl think I be playing sometimes and most times I am lol but I’m so tired of buying “the stuff” for the monthly monster even though I buy it all in bulk.

    • Mz_Opinionated

It could be lifestyle and I studied all of this. Trust me. I don't come into this topic blindly. But white women eat dairy and soy! Why are we genetically predisposition ed to have these conditions? I went pescetarian and then vegetarian back to pescetarian again. With only eating wild caught salmon at one point. I was looking into Dr. Sebi's theories as well. There is a lot of stuff that is not being said. Not saying we should eat dairy but depending on body types you start missing out on certain vitamins when you restrict yourself. Plus i was eating TONS of carbohydrates when I went vegetarian and Junk food. So I say...balance.

    • Bonita

      ?

    • Bonita

      Wow!

    • CookieMobster

Ladies... My flow is terrible, I have endometriosis, ECT. ECT. Some day I will have to have one of these, likely. Every lady that I know says it hurts terrible to have sex after you've had one and healed. My mom had one prolly 6 years ago and has not been able to have vaginal sex since. My boss too. Fyi, that was a lil toooo much info from mom's, btw. My brother said eww you ain't having vaginal sex but you are having sex.... You nasty. Not the finest family time moment. Oh the images.... I digress.
Those of you who have had one, is this your same experience???

    • CookieMobster

I was thinking the same thing!!!! Like where they do that at?

    • Stanley’s Mood

Yeah, I have to use a surrogate. But I've got one lined up already.

    • Mz_Opinionated

I have several girlfriends with hysterectomies and them heffas are nasty ? Some married and they haven't said a word about pain. But different strokes I guess...

    • IyanlaVanzantoftheInterWebs

      I wouldnt...

    • Chaseboogie The Prince

It is so sad that someone of Toni's age, success, and accomplishment STILL needs attention. She has two sons and she wants them and the whole world to see her breast. She has no secrecy, no discretion, no morals. She does not know how to go create a life for herself outside of the spotlight and that is sad to watch. She will be 60 years old still lifting up her shirt and pouting out her lips so the world will give her some validation.

    • 1BlueStar

      Old thirst ass....smh

    • Not Today

Best thing I've ever done. I had a C-section so my doctor followed the same cut. So I have only one scar, and the scar isn't that bad. I wish you the best of luck

    • TheWildChild

? She better follow up with an endocrinologist for some topical HRT/Estrogen patches, as her risk starting menopause is higher. I'm sure her surgeon tucked and tighten quite a bit during her hysterectomy. ? She can kill all that about that lame boring azz workout "Orange Theory" with their annoying marketing schemes? they're still at the block party in my contacts.

    • TheWildChild

And I hear more people have odd complications from that method and there's a case where one woman was chopped up and her cancer wasn't detected by pathology results.

    • Applebum

I love your post. I feel the same way. I don’t understand any celebrity human worship. I can’t do it. Only God gets my praises.

    • Applebum

If she was trying to show the hysterectomy dots below why was the point of pulling the shirt that high and purposely showing one boob? Pathetic much?

    • She.Is.Not.Ready

Give Mirena or another IUD a try...there is a chance it will stop your period (amenorrhea). I am nearly the end of my 2nd one and haven't had a period since my daughter was born (she's 10). It's lovely.

    • Seldomseen

Toni if you want to get naked...just get naked. So I guess you and birdman are not planning on having any bambino’s

    • LaJuan D Johnson

I love Toni Braxton! I always have but this photo made me sad! I thought as a fan that she would be past these types of pics considering her sons are older now! I just feel that it is simply inappropriate! If she wanted to speak on her hysterectomy or the scars, she could have discussed both in a classier way! IJS!

    • LaJuan D Johnson

So well said and so true! Straight to the point! Nothing else needs to be said! LOL!

    • Mrs Mary

EXACTLY!!! She failed to mention liposuction scars too. These celebrities are nothing but LIARS!!!

    • Mrs Mary

      RIGHT LMAO

    • SweetTEE

I don't think it has as much to do with lifestyle when young black girls have these disorders and are otherwise the picture of health. I have endometriosis like a lot of women in my family and it has nothing to do with lifestyle, diet, stress or exercise. It seems that we may be genetically predisposed. Remember, the health care community is NOT helpful with us and our issues. I was put on depo at 15 without sex and told to have a damn baby.

    • KLo

girl, go put on some clothes and stop being so thirsty . bad enough your laying down with an ugly ruffian to get the rest of his loose change.

    • Rayne

I honestly don’t want to insert or attach anything to me. I had the depo and took the pills before and together but.... here we are ? . There’s gotta be something to help me . I don’t want a period anymore. I’m going to talk to my ob tomorrow. Trying to find answers before I kick this baby out.

    • Rayne

I’m going to look into something. Thanks.

    • Rayne

      Cause of those hot flashes?

    • Not Today

      Np

    • Stellar Evolution

I was confused by the picture and thought, "so.... Her hysterectomy scar extends all the way up to her right breast?...." LOL It's kind of embarrassing that she felt like she had to use THAT to get attention... If you want attention tony, take the damn selfie

    • Mr.LeBrickJames

The thirst is real. smh ?

    • Mr.LeBrickJames

I agree. I can't imagine being a teenage boy and seeing a pic of my 51 year old mother putting her stuff on display like this on social media. I would just cringe. ?? So inappropriate.

    • Donna Essentia

      its immediate...

    • Donna Essentia

nobody knows i had a hysterectomy until i told them, i dont have any scars and i had a TAH with 30 staples

    • Donna Essentia

i dont regret mine...cancer is the worst

    • OvertheMississippi

I have small dots from incisions. Nothing to advertise. ??????????

    • IyanlaVanzantoftheInterWebs

Not just them. Hormonal imbalances mess with Everything and cause problems

    • Notatall

When people post goofy Instagram photos and captions like this, it insults my intelligence- as if we can't read between the lines. This has nothing to do with nothing but her showing her body....she needs help:(

    • PrettyNetty28

      Same thing I thought.

    • Leigh Burton

I wonder if Toni's abortion contributed to health problems later in life.

    • ???TheRider???

I had the same surgery as you. It was supposed to be laparoscopic but when I got on the table and the doctor got in there they realized it couldn’t be so they had to do abdominal. The surgery lasted four hours. My recovery which I thought would be just a couple of weeks was the absolute worst of my life, I was off work 4 months. I had the surgery because I had 32 fibroids they were making my life absolute hell, they were even in my rectum. I’d just be walking and the pains would feel like Iron Mike pinches me in the stomach. I don’t have/didn’t have children (my only regret) so this was the worst pain I’ve ever felt. It’s been 2 years and I’m pain free?

    • DeNice82

      ?????

    • Oya Shango

She must have had a cervical (vaginal) hysterectomy. What is she doing showing her breast and stomach? There is no scarring there, because that is not where the procedure was preformed. On another note, she looks absolutely great for 51 yrs. Black most certainly do not crack.

    • Daryl Campbell

I wonder if it were too many gay/ bi sexual men rocking her cat.

    • Dreamer

      Bloop ?

    • shay2shaymd

My thoughts exactly. Too old for this foolishness.

    • Stanley’s Mood

I wouldn't wish that surgery on my worst enemy. It was painful. But the joy of having no more pain is amazing. The hot flashes suck though.

    • currvalicious

      What is a Salpingo-Oophorectomy?

    • currvalicious

      Wow.

    • currvalicious

You're so right. I want to try pescetarian. I know Remy Ma made the choice. Would you recommend?

    • currvalicious

Toni had her hysterectomy back in 2011

    • Mz_Opinionated

Try it! If you don't like it...Go back to doing what works for you. I have learned we are all human beings. Trial and Error is what life is.

    • ???TheRider???

You are so right these damn hot flashes! I’ll take them over pain any day!

    • Linda NaeNae Owens

Are they trying to get women comfortable with the thought of having their uterus removed jw or is it just starving for attention either or JW

    • SayWhatNow?

Right! Any excuse to be naked on the internet. She should have just captioned it Hey look how good I look at 50 because using hysterectomy scars as an excuse is just stupid.

    • SayWhatNow?

I guess she had hysterectomy scars on her breast as well...
