Janet Jackson wins NAACP award

Before I can even get my day started good, the Janet Jackson fans are already whining and complaining because I didn’t mention that Janet won an NAACP Award last night. My regular readers know that I’m not big on awards shows. There are plenty of blogs that cover who won what and who wore what. That’s not my thing.

Furthermore, I don’t know why Janet fans think I don’t like her or that I’m always dissing her. My regular readers know I’m always for the underdog – and make no mistake about it – Janet is definitely an underdog given the fact that she is currently being blackballed by the industry.

Miss Jackson won an NAACP Award last night for her role in Tyler Perry‘s “Why Did I Get Married?” Denzel Washington was the big winner of the evening with four trophies for his film about a college debate team. READ MORE…

It just amazes me when the white folk get finished with certain celebs (the jackson family) we just can’t wait to give them an award. Janet and dem would never come to the black awards shows in the past check the record. Now the hefer need a hit she gone plant herself in Blaclanta with the WizardOz of southwest(jermaine) and the Sweetie of all the negro ensemble movies(perry) and then yall gave her an Naacp award I think not. She acted like she didnt know what to say she should have had a lot to say she would never come to the awards show back in the day…And i thought you had to be black to get an Naacp award why did ugly betty get one and then the native american dancers. Thats all good and fine but save that for another show. yall just want obama to win so yall invited erry body to the party..He is gonna win but not because he is “black” but because he is Tiger Woods to them….he is not really black and his family has no ties to the civil rights movement—did yall think about that why they love him so they aint never loved yall like that…is he they TigerWoods…black without a cause…..don’t be bamboozled.

As for Janet’s Image award…pfffft! I don’t care; someone Black was going to win it regardless. She overacted in this role; I couldn’t stop seeing Janet on screen–instead of her character.

Is it me are all the award shows startingn to blend together like one bit catastrophe? I use to love watching them…not anymore. Sometimes, I’ll watch one or two artists and then I turn away.

Congrats to her, but I think that Jill Scott’s character stood out more and exactly what else has Janet done lately to warrant her receiving an image award? 9 times out of 10 when we see pictures of her she’s at somebody’s club.

Well I saw a little of the show, but after a while it just got silly. They don’t give the award to the best in a category. As a matter of fact I don’t know how they figure out the winners. How’s the overacting father on House of Payne going to beat all those veterans in his category? How is Janet who definately didn’t carry Why Did I Get Married going to win over the vast amount of talent that was in her category. It was just silly. I did enjoy DL Hugley for the time I watched though.

Yeah I forgot about the House of Payne, I like that show(sometimes) but I think that the couple on there should just stick to stage plays cause they really do overact & it don’t be that funny, Bird you hit that one on the head!! & is work that bad that Allen Payne fine ass has to do a low budget sitcom what happened to the movies I guess after New Jack City & Jason’s Lyric the BET movie offers came in & he couldn’t refuse(??)

And I think Solange as a PCD might be a good look for her. It’s obvious that’s she’s not going to get any respect as a solo artist, which sucks because she actually has a good voice and a different style. I’m a BeyBey fan, but it’s sad how anybody associated with her can’t have a successful solo entertainment career.

The Jacksons have been apart of the NAACP ceremonies going all the way back to the Jackson 5 days. Janet and Michael have been on there many times and have both been honored before.

The Image Awards are given out to minorities, people of color. The “Ugly Betty” star is a Latina. If anything (plushplush) you should be upset over the fact that a WHITE actress (Angelina Jolie) was nominated for her role playing a mixed race (Black) woman. Now that made me laugh. lol

Does Janet ever age? She gave me Penny vibes last night. Loved the dress.

Black music right now is in a State of Emergency. We have no socially righteous folks in Hip Hop now. With the exceptions of artists like Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, KRS One, etc. We don’t even know about these dudes because they are totally UNDERGROUND and u will NEVER hear them on Mainstream radio. You will NEVER hear them because their not talking about smoking DRO, taking E-Pills and going homw with “NAPPY HEADED-HOES” in their music.

Until we get the “substance” back in our music, nobody is really gonna give a EFF about no Music Awards Shows or no other dayum “Celebrity” BS.

Except Michael too has attended Black award shows (Soul Train Music Awards, BET Awards and Image Awards) throughout the years or even just chilling in the audience like he did at the Essence Awards in 94′. Let’s not forget his surprise at the BET Awards a couple of years ago in tribute to his hero James Brown.

And, yeah Justin could have had her back a little more, but Janet is damn near twice his age, and knew what the hell she was doing!! I was shocked that Janet beat Ruby Dee, I too thought that Jill Scott’s character was the strongest so I am not sure why Janet won.
Award shows are boring now because we have no great performers in our generation (yes I said it). I remember in the 80’s, I use to stay up to watch Janet, Tina, Lionel, and Whitney perform….the music was so great you were excited about who the winner was going to be. Now its a different generation of studio work, no one is worth buying. Every song is about money, drugs, ho’s, materials, and other non important things…..whats sad is their not even creative, even though they think they are.

Y’all it looked like money changed hands as much as Tyler and his camp was all up in that piece. No way that tired throwback, House of Payne should have won anything ! I mean how do you put Why did I get married up against The Great Debaters and Talk to Me??? Really? I mean come on now. It was so obvious to me and to all that were sitting around me at the Shrine that somebody handed over a big ass contribution to somebody. Tyler is looking for a new deal out there and he wanted to make sure he looked good to CORPORATE AMERICA, not black folks but CORPORATE AMERICA. Being up against a black actor who is active in the NAACP and beloved by black america (Denzel) is the only reason his movie didn’t take Best Pic. But his little show swept the TV categories. Being best comedy over 30 Rock, Girlfriends, Everybody hates Chris and Ugly Betty, so obvious that that award last night was meant for the man that courted it the most.
Ford, Chevy, Hewlett Packard, IBM all sponsored this event, these are the brand makers out there and Tyler made sure they saw him as the next hot thing. I have rarely been so surprised. I truly was ashamed to be a member last night.
What was really telling was once they swept everything, Tyler and his group, including Janet, all the actors in all his movies and tv series decided that the celebration after was not for them , the one that cost a lot of money to present, they were above going. They decided to celebrate separately as if they were too good. They did not bother to go to the BHH to celebrate the NAACP. Honor an organization that has changed our history, they had used it and got the hell out.
The awards last night only meant that Tyler will have an easier time crossing over wearing his dress or not. While I appreciate his hustle,I would prefer that he not play the white man’s game, I would prefer that he get over on his talent and not on the backs of amazing treasures like Julian Bond and Ruby Dee.

Last couple of Janet related topics I read was her taking jabs at her new single and the album cover photos and trust me if you took the time to go back and read the negative vs the positive promotion you would have understood my whole point! Whether the knockoff white version of an Usher wannabe is younger or not still the fact remains she wasn’t on that stage by herself. I think the point I was trying to make on that note is that you so called blacks tend to stay on the white folks side meaning supporting someone who copies our style as a people while letting a sista be blackballed by white america and sit by and allow it to happen while giving the wannabe airplay on the black radio stations and forgetting all about her. Anyway if you read what I wrote I never said the Jackson’s didn’t attend any black award shows. I was simply stating Janet attended all the shows and so did Mike at one time until he got too big, got in with the white folks and stop attending for a while of course he got blackballed and now he’s back and black! Yeah it does upset me when I see my own people bashing each other instead of supporting and uplifting one another. Which would explain why we don’t succeed much as a race because we are too busy doing what the white man has already been doing to us for yrs!!!

I won’t get into what “black” Jackson stopped going to Black award shows and whatnot, but I will say that I agree with Bsoul, I think it was, who said she over-acted.

Never have I seen so many g*ddamn, excessive HAND GESTURES/MOVEMENT/WHATEVER as I did during almost every scene of this movie!

And on the whole, while I like Tyler Perry, I like Madea, I like his hustle-game, etc. THIS FILM WAS HORRIBLE. People complain and wonder why it received a rating of 2 out of 10 on the IMDB.COM page? Because it was THAT BAD. HORRIBLE. Tasha Smith was funny in some scenes, but a lot of times her lines (and others) came off as FORCED and FAKE. And I read that she had been an acting coach in L.A. before taking on roles? WTF? Maybe it’s all Tyler’s direction and amateur screenwriting….

At any rate, congrats to Janet. It ain’t an Oscar, babe, but it’s love from your people. It wasn’t an Oscar-worthy performance, but it was okay enough to gain some dap from the community.

C’mon black filmmakers as big as Tyler Perry, these mediocre STORIES, DIALOGUE, DIRECTION have got to STOP! I love Tyler, but doggone it! Step it up a notch!
