According to Rolling Stone magazine, Eminem — not Jay Z or Kanye West — is the undisputed King of Hop Hop.
And why not? Black rappers have destroyed what once was a cerebral art form with their materialistic bragging, self hate and absentee father issues.
The ignorance that substitutes for Hip Hop today has caused true fans to turn away from the genre in droves.
While others are watching the throne, Rolling Stone was watching the numbers. Editors of the iconic music magazine used album sales and chart figures dating back 2 years in deciding who should take the crown.
“Thanks to his two latest chart-topping albums, 2009’s Relapse and 2010’s Recovery, the man otherwise known as Slim Shady sold more than two and a half times the number of albums as the second-ranked Lil Wayne during our survey period,” wrote Rolling Stone.
It doesn’t matter to Rolling Stone that Eminem, real name Marshall Bruce Mathers III, is bordering on 39 years old. Mathers embodies Hip Hop’s credo of “keeping it real” without having to tear up a $300K Maybach to do it.
Eminems 1st 2 cd’s were good, after that eh
Whoa, that is not a good picture of him, he has on too much make up and his lips are extra pouty.
He’s a great rapper but I don’t know if I’d crown him king just yet.
Did he get a face transplant? He looks like a serial killer
BS!!
I would sue Rolling Stone for running a picture of me looking like that.
His face looks like someone drew it…
Is that a stain on his shirt on the cover of a magazine? They couldn’t photoshop that??? Not a good look Marshall.
LMAO @Eb! I couldn’t put my finger on it, but you are right, he looks EXACTLY like a serial killer! What ever happened to muscular, buff, Eminem with the slicked down blond hair?
King? Eh.

I never cared for him because he was just difficult for no reason. I remember interviewers asking him basic questions and him being an ass in the process. And when he tried to clown Will Smith, I had enough.

Loves me some Marshall. BUT…while his lyrics may be void of alot of materalistic references….ahh drug use is considered by some a form of self hatred…and I am pretty sure he lived mostly with his crazy azz momma with no pappy. IJS
Love how when white people do it they get all kinds of accolades but whatever
@WHITE I AINT HATING I LIKE HIM HE ANGRY AND LETS IT BE KNOWN!!
Eh…if they say so
That’s not much of a title to be proud of being that hip hop is pretty much a joke now.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mathers looks like his makeup was done by a mortician.

Stan will forever be one of my favorite songs.
I’m not a huge fan of Em but the Eminem Show was a classic, but what kills me is of course he’s selling more than the average “rapper” he’s WHITE… He already has the “crossover” success that most rappers dream of. HIS PEOPLE buying his chit and some of US are too. I’m not tryna make this a black ot white thing. But truth is white people will go buy REAL cd’s and not bootleg like MOST of us not ALL but most… Point blank period MAJORITY RULES and WHITE is the majority

I agree. Rap is not rap anymore, it’s Hip Hop. People reference ol skool with Hip Hop, but I think it should be the other way around. Every song out is a dance song with no real lyrics. Eminem has nothing but lyrics. Even his dance songs have meaning, you might not like what he has to say, but he is saying something. I personally would listen to Eminem before Jay Z or Kanye any day.
If a black rapper had the amount of success that Eminem had, there would be no discussion on that rapper being named as the King of Rap.
Though I’m not an Eminem fan, I will say I don’t hear him going around bragging or claiming to be the king of rap like others do.
I heard about this on the radio this morning while driving to work (if it’s the same list) . I think Drake is named in the top 5. Now, I really have a problem with that.
@Kdubb
now here u go!!!
Have you never listened to the Marshall Mathers LP? He talks about killing Kim and his mother throughout the entire album. His music is just like the rest of hip hop.
#classicthough
SO KANYE JAY Z WEEZY EM AND DRAKE WHO WILL RANK NUMBER ONE FOR YALL??
His 1st CD was Banging BUT THAT IS ABOUT IT! Now, don’t get me wrong, he’s lyrically talented but he is BY NO MEANS King of Hip Hop! As far as the above mentioned from Sandra, have you been hearing the same artist as the rest of the general public because he is one of the most conceited rappers out, he picked w/celebs (and still do) in order to become relevant, I don’t recall his father being a strong presence in his life AND he continually speaks about hurting and/or killing women. IMO he has, hands down, surpass any booty shaking in videos, chopping up maybachs, champagne flaunting, big chain wearing rapper I’ve seen thus far as far as issue are concerned!

Sandra, understand that eminem doesnt stand a chance. His fate is destruction.
jayz & kanye still have a chance, if only they would turn from their extreme wickedness.
A white man would never be a King of something my Brothers Invented…
I would listen to Kanye/Jay over Em any day and I like some of Ems music
@bigbadwolf
i
that chit he has something to say and say something in errsong… might be kinda crazy but hey its his art his way of expressing himself we chose to listen or ignore..
How are the white writers of Rolling Stone going to crown someone “The King of Hip Hop” I have never been an Eminem fan he always sounds like he’s rapping off beat to me. If a black person flowed the way Em did he would be just an “iight” rapper. I’m starting to believe what Nas said Hip Hop is dead…smh
 i dont agree with their choice, but its RS so

hey yall
Whatever Rolling Stone
Just because y’all say so don’t make it true, it’s just your opinion. Nothing again Em but King, I say not
HEEEEEY EVERYONE.
..oh but when Em outdid Jay on his own song/cd the argument probably could have been started then. Top five dead or alive you have to include himint he doscussion. Drake needs to have a row of seats (c) Daisy and Eb. He doesn’t have enough material to even make the honorary mention (IMO).
@tainted I LUV Nasir Olu Dara Jones
I guess.
I never really cared for him or his music. He was too damn angry to me.
White folks bootleg too. Who created Napster, Limewire, and all these other things to download FREE music?
I only listen to a few rappers like…Kanye, Mos Def, J. Cole, Common, Jay and my fav Nas

Um…I have to agree with Rolling Stone. That boy can RAP. Whenever he gets on a track with “US”, he always does the track dirty. He outshined Kanye, Drake, Lil Wayne on that Forever remix. That boy is talented and doesn’t have to have a clothing brand, tennis shoe line, throw a fit, or be married to an already successful artist to deliver. He get’s my vote and then Andre 3000 is right up underneath him.
I know ODB is turning in his fuggin’ grave right now!
Rolling Stone been around for HOW LONG?? And NOW they wanna crown a “King of Hip Hop?”
No hate at Em. He’s in the top ten talent wise as far as rappers. But he shoulnd’t even be allowed in the same room as:
1. Kanye
2. Wayne
3. Nas
4. Drake
5. Luda

WHITE FOLK and s/o to them for creating these programs.
Eminem has a crazy flow but the BEST? Absolutely not. I am a hardcore Jay-Z fan and he just has a way with his words which is why I enjoy his music so much.
I was waiting on somebody to say Em got Jay on his own song
@tainted add outkast/andre 3K/the roots/black star to the list for me
I like Eminem. His first two albums were in heavy rotation in my car. If you listen to him he does talk about being the best, money, etc. but it’s not his main topic, he’s mostly a horrorcore rapper. The reality is his cadences are crazy so people overlook when he doesn’t say anything in his verses. He started losing me when he went the fake angry yt guy route.
Anywho, Good Morning Bishes!!!
I love Em I really do but……
@Man, have you seen the Sports Guy’s article on this very topic? It’s in his archives
he is only king far as this generation of so called rappers. he is lyrical nice but there have been others that can out do him word play wise. is he better than ye, jay and weezy yes. but that is rolling stones take on his record sells and so forth.
But here is my question who outside of the suburban kids and wanna be flossed out rappers really checkin for this that is called hip hop? true essence heads of hip hop aren’t checkin em and the others #IJS

@Lakes. I am an old skool hip hopper. But I ain’t gonna lie Wayne is and always has been a contender for numma one. DJM. I been listening to him since he was a wee one and he done came a LONG way. Wayne has been on the scene AS AN ARTIST (I say that cause I know the Ye heads gonna come on and talk about his producing…we not tambout that right now) longer than anyone other than Jay. If I am not mistaken him and Em hit the charts the same year. I don’t feel like googling right now.
The dude done paid his dues too. (*Puts in “Sqad Up” mixtape series)

Hey, I’m a Nas fanatic and I really wasn’t a big Wayne fan until the last couple of years. In fact, I couldn’t stand him cause he would always get on the mic and start slurring and chit.
But I can’t deny the last 2+ years the man has been on abosolute fire. His chit been second only to Kanye.
I admit Drake is on there because I’m looking at “potential.” So far he has been creative lyrically. Not just rapping about how much money he got.
@KDUB
IRRRRK!! STOP! THAT MAN IS SICK!!!
Rolling Stone was watching the numbers. Editors of the iconic music magazine used album sales and chart figures dating back 2 years in deciding who should take the crown.

Rolling Stone used album sales and chart figures, and like GAGirl said, “most” of us don’t buy the real CD’s, nobody has a tally on the bootlegs…unless they want to sue you for lost wages…But I know ya’ll remember the best rapper thing they did no BET, Who got the crown EMINEM and that room had producers, rappers, and other people in the industry, and there were on 2 yt folks.
Of course they would, it’s The Rolling Stone not Vibe, The Source or XXL. Their opinions don’t matter to me, the kings (that title is too big for only one imo) of hip hop are Jay Z, Nas, and Kanye West. Em’s last album was garbage, every album from every artist I named was fire, they never disappointed their fans, not one time.

Well if RS used sales and charts figures..then he would be the king. I heard several years ago, Eminem was the biggest selling and highest charting rapper. You have to remember, Eminem is popular with white kids…who BUY CD’s..not bootleg and illegally download them. Plus, he may rap a little about materialism, badassism, etc, those are not the main theme of his muscic, and although he comes from a rough part of Detroit, white parents don’t see him as threatening or dangerous. And if you’ve seen him in interviews, he can talk in complete, grammatically correct sentences. So he’s not bringing illiteracy and “hood” ideals to white children. That said, if you’re over 30 and still listening to mainstream “rap” these days, you have to feel a little foolish. The chit is so childish it’s embarrasing. We don’t make “rap” anymore, the same way we don’t make R&B anymore…now white people from Europe are making better R&B music than American Blacks . Go figure…
I like storytellers. Devin the Dude, Jay Z. Kanye,Bub B and Wayne are lyricist to me and I like that also.
Wayne’s Carter 2 was him at his best imo. I think if the original Carter wouldn’t have leaked he would’ve smashed shyt. He’s been all down hill from there though.

the list is flawed when you have to account sales em will always be on top. he is accepted by all races in a way no other rapper is and it translates into sales. this list should read like who is the most popular instead of king of hiphop. i also have a problem with drake being at the top of any list. he has one album out he hasnt put in enough work to even be in the top 5.

Ice Cube didn’t sell out. He did what every other person does. Just tries to make. When rap made it’s transition from Hardcore to Mainstream, he backed away,or was turned away whatevers clever, but he chose to act and make movies instead of doing the Stanky Leg. Look at LL Cool J, Ice T, TI, Luda, Common, Method Man, Redd Man,and many other rapper turned actors. IJS

Here’s a question though.. Why is Scarface never mentioned in these arguments?
“While others are watching the throne, Rolling Stone was watching the numbers.”
—————————————————————————
He does outsell and WILL continue to outsell the likes of Jay-Z, Kanye, and Lil Wayne, amongst others. Eminem is a beast of the mic and he has the record sales to prove it. This is that same sh(i)t I was talking about between Britney and Beyonce. Beyonce might be a better entertainer and all but when it comes to those record sales, Beyonce too has to step to the side because Britney Spears kills the competition.
On another note, I do not and will not ever support any of Eminem’s endeavors. I give credit where credit is due, he’s a talented one but all the bull that hes started over the years did it for me a long time ago.
And let’s not forget scarface one of the best from the south

I am so surprised that you all listing Wayne and Jay as lyricist
Wayne has the most water down flow ever. He is Pop Rap (see Dimpz post with lyrics). Jay has repeated the same shit for the last decade. He just switched the tracks up.

I think you giving credit to these other rappers simply because you like their material more than they creativity used to discuss their material.
I think Biggie was lyrically more creative than Pac. He used analogies and different uses of words and chit like that more often than Pac but Pac had a better flow and usually rapped about deeper chit.
Kinda similar with Wayne. He is definitely creative and has a good flow. He just doesn’t rap about “deep” chit.
But I think he COULD if he was motivated to.

@Man. I just feel he has matured if he was still 40 something and rapping people would be saying he needs to go sit down some where and enjoy is wife and kids. I think he did the smart thing by moving in a different direction it shows growth and maturity on his part IMO. Family first
I’m coming out of lurk mode for this one… and this is going to be a book… LOL
As a hardcore EMINEM supporter I am happy that he is getting the props that are due to him. I will say this, I remember when EMINEM first hit the mainstream back in ’99ish… he was all over the place and his tunes were quite catchy. I have to admit that I really thought that he was a fad passing through with the bleach blonde look and all. I didn’t really listen to his unedited music, just what was on the airwaves. When I did hear a few of his explicit songs I just thought he was so angry. When he came out with the song “The Way I Am” I began to understand him a little more… and my support of him grew.
When “8 Mile” hit the wide screen sheeeiitt I saw that flick like 3 times back to back! Although the story was loosely based off of his life and some of what he went through I realized that #1 I respected the dedication he has for his craft and #2 I had a mad crush on him! Throughout the years he was always in the spotlight for negative stuff that was going on in his life, and his struggles were out there for the entire world to see. He continued to put out music and was then gone from the scene for a moment as he dealt with the demons in his life.
Fast forward to ’09/’10 when “I’m Not Afraid” hit the airwaves… that was my song!! I was never one that really bought a lot of rap albums, but this song was different than any other I heard. It was very personal and it was more than a song, it was a testimony! I remember when EMINEM performed the song on the BET award show I believe.. the response that he received from his peers and the crowd was amazing.. he received a standing ovation! Honestly speaking, when he was performing that song I listened to the depth of his words and I was overwhelmed with emotion. To think that this man almost met his demise because of personal demons within himself and he was able to turn it all around after being given a SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE brought tears to my eyes. For the first time ever, I went out and purchased a EMINEM CD.. “Recovery”.
Since listening to “Recovery” I began to understand this man’s fight for his LIFE. Through all that this man has been through one thing that cannot be disputed is his TALENT. After I bought “Recovery” I went and purchased ALL of his other CD’s and what I heard blew my f’in mind!! This man is a lyrical genius with a brilliant mind!! His cadence and triple time flow, syllables and enunciation is out of this world! As I began to listen to all of his cd’s I actually listed to his words and could somehow see where all of his anger came from. I believe that experiencing hurtful things in my life made me relate to him more. I’ve been drug free my entire life and will continue to do so.. however addictions aren’t only in drug/alcohol form. Addictions can relate to relationships, spending habits and so forth. So even though my addictions and struggles weren’t the same as his, they were just as disruptive in my life.
A lot of people look at these celebrities and think that their lives are perfect, but they hurt like we do if not more. They may put up a facade for the public, but can be a complete mess behind closed doors. We all knew that the man we knew as EMINEM struggled with his drug addiction, had a disruptive life and so forth… but look at where he is now. I think that people are finally seeing him as more than EMINEM but as Marshall Mathers III… get past the rhymes and the beat .. he is a responsible father to his biological daughter, his adoptive daughter (Kim’s niece) and a father figure to Kim’s other daughter as well as guardian to his brother. He did not let naysayers get to him, he did not give in to reverse racism, he did not give in to the demons in his life, he recognized that he was given a 2nd chance and no longer involves himself with BS.. his maturity level is where it’s supposed to be. This man deserves all of the accolades that he has received and will receive. It doesn’t matter that he will be 39 years of age this year.. talent has no age limit on it and he is at the top of his game!
And no, this isn’t a good picture of him.. the photographer/editor should be shot for that!
#Team EMINEM #Team Marshall Mathers III #Team Shady ALL DAY / ER’ DAY!!!
witeboi52
No one is hating on Em. Is that what you are hoping for? We see that data, facts and figures were used as tools to justify the conclusion. Even in that no one is disputing his flow or talent.
This art form dates back a bit further than 2 years as well as the span of his career. If this decision was made all inclusive of other factors outside of sales, what would the conclusion be? There are so many talented hip hop artist (dating back) I would have trouble narrowing it down.
Somebody just brought up Scarface, hotdam I need about a week.

No hate, but I have never been a fan of Em. And this is from when he first came out. He’s lyrically good, but great
. I think most of his appeal came from, he was a white boy w/decent lyrics that didn’t consist of Ice Ice Baby or Jump Around (see V. Ice and House of Pain). And he was cosigned by Dre, the undisputed greatest hip hop producer of our time ,IMO. But for me, Em started he same way 50 started, picking beefs to get his name out there. (notice he never picked a beef w/someone who could slaughter his a$$ on a track) He went for the Britney’s and the Justins and such. Plus, for me until recently his rap cadence was always the same, whiny and annoying as fvck. He sounded like he was always suffering from post-nasal drip.
Again, just my opinion.
I’m soprry @Ty but we gonna hafta disagree on Wayne and his lyrical content. Folks keep saying the man is dumb/uneducated etc but in some of his lyrics he comes across as highly intelligent IMO.
Jay-Z got early onset cause I agree….he been saying the same ish since 1999 and he forgot he done said it. Still tambout drugs he sold back in 1979….

Hey, I feel ya on Cube. Really, I do. But I don’t see how doing beer commercials marketed towards black is him “maturing.”
He could have just been a producer and been an influence for GOOD in the industry he helped establish. But I guess shuckin and jivin was better for his family so he did what he felt best.
Most sell outs sleep well at night and I guess Cube is no different.

Nobody is going to sit there and read thru all that chit Cupcake dang, some of you are really taking this too serious when this is merely a debate. At the end of the day we will all still have our own opinions regardless of what the numbers or RS says. Stop trying to influence those that don’t consider Em the king otherwise. I will never see him in that light, and nothing any of you say will change that.
eminem does speak about him being the best and anybody who doesnt think so doesnt listen to his music. he is definitely one of the best even if he was black i think his recognition among the hiphop community would be just about the same but the fact that he is white motivates those to identify with him because he is good and looks just like them. im curious to why nicki wouldnt be above drake when her cd sold more and she actually been on more major tours than drake which i dont agree with neither being in the top 5 im curious as to how he came out more popular in this list. but far as number 1s go its jay. out of the elites along the lines or biggie pac and so forth he is the only one who got to fulfil their career. nobody in rap had a run like him ever. and not to mention your favorite rappers favorite rapper. but shout out to scarface somebody mentioned i would love for him to be able to do the album of him , jay and beanie segal that he talked about.
@Man.. I think he could have assisted in producing in the industry so that the bubble gum rappers wouldn’t have a chance.
Hmmm
@ Redeemed … do you realize that you have no heaven or hell to put anyone in?? Do you realize that no man knows the fate of another man’s soul other than GOD???
Anyone that is still breathing has a chance here on this earth because they can still ask for forgiveness .. not from you.. but from our Heavenly Father!!

Only 3 songs I like by M&M are Stan, Cleaning Out My Closet (that chit used to be anthem, cause I used to have serious beef with my mama) and the song where he chitted on Jay on his own song… Other than that M&M is just a big ass gimmick. He’s a white rapper who can put words together clever….nothing impressive really!!!
Also, not a huge Wayne fan, cause again, HIS voice can be annoying as fvck too. BUT, you gotta give that lil gremlin his props, when it comes to metaphors and analogies, he killing ’em and has been for a minute. He will say some shyt that make you rewind it a couple of times. He’s a businessman if nothing else, and he has the money to prove it. It’s all about Jay AND Beyonce. Believe man that if he didn’t have his wife, he’d be out the door too. Using this as criteria, the ONLY thing you can hold against Wayne is POSSIBLY delivery (you either like his voice or you don’t) and intelligence (because he usually rappin bout some ignant chit or sex).
but the rest of the chit I gotta say he has…
@ Man, I like Jada Kiss im not suggesting he’s one of the elite tho
Like Whhhaaatttt? Rolling Stones needs to get off the GAS with all that!
Like I said before, I have heard some thangs bout Em, but that man is not the King of HipHop #Fact That…
Even Jay hasn’t forgotten about Ether

Nas slaughtered Jay on that song….
Hands Down!!!
See this is where it gets twisted. Its not about who is current or who is popular. We are talking straight lyrical assasins and that shyt doesnt expire. Again, any of those rappers can still shyt on anyone that is currently riding the charts with some shyt they released over 10 years ago.

That’s true cause Andre 3000 doesnt really tour and that nigga got a fierce mouth piece….U are more than likely to see Jesus before you see 3000 perform ANYWHERE!!!
@ Choc.. If you cared to READ what i wrote you would’ve READ that I addressed the picture…

@ Man…I guess but what the hell is this:
“I am trapped in a maze therefore I am amazing”
Nas did not slaughter Jay with Ether. And I like them both so it’s not a fan thing.
….so pissed i missed this conversation
@Ty
I’ve never listened to Wayne and had to rewind the song. I do bump his music though.
Cupcake it’s not about me not being able to read dear, everyone here has an opinion but nobody even replied to yours I wonder why. I don’t see any posts here with incorrect grammar, just because I openly admitted I wasn’t interested in reading your diatribe of bullsh*tb doesn’t make you smarter than anyone else on this post so get over yourself.
While Wayne does talk a helleva lot about sex and other shat …he will hitchu with a “Misunderstood” or a “Georgia Bush” and fukk your head up. The dude may be high most of the time but I can tell he paid attention in school/college while he was there.
Whereas Jay-Z graduated from high school in 1982. Are we really gonna want to listen to what a 50 yo man gotta say in 8-9 years? If we by that time are pushing or at 40 our ownselves?
Choco aka Hippie says:
Nobody is going to sit there and read thru all that chit Cupcake dang, some of you are really taking this too serious when this is merely a debate.
Let talk about that

Lmao
*scrolls back up to Cupcake with
Poor EM though that picture of him is not the business. The picture reminds me of a dead person with a lot of make up on. bbbbbooooooooooooooooooooo on the photoshop
@KDub
I do think if Wayne didn’t put out all that microwave shyt he would be formidable. I was hoping that that skid bid he did would make his music deeper but he got out on the same shyt and I was thoroughly dissappointed.
@ DMiss .. I didn’t write what I did for replies, responses, or co signs.
I don’t need an audience or anything of the like. Also, if you didn’t read my post you have no right to call it BS.. and how can a person’s spin on something be BS anyways?
Further more, I didn’t say that anyone here in this post or in particular used incorrect grammar.. I was making a point. But again you couldn’t see the forest for the trees.
So like I said.. skip my loooong post and keep it moving to the next just like er’body else. I don’t need co signs, High 5’s, comments, or replies… so unless Aunty herslef feels partial to my post then it is what it is.
Cupcake says:
@ Redeemed … do you realize that you have no heaven or hell to put anyone in?? Do you realize that no man knows the fate of another man’s soul other than GOD???
Anyone that is still breathing has a chance here on this earth because they can still ask for forgiveness .. not from you.. but from our Heavenly Father!!

LOL! I’m cool, I swear I am. I rarely do post, so when I do I am passionate about what I say. So for someone to take a cheap shot about what I said when they did’t even READ it is uncalled for.
ok is it just me or does M&M look like a corspe on the cover of that mag, kinda of creepy!
why people bring up age in hiphop when no other artform scolds you for being a certain age? i think if you should continue to make music until your music is just not good anymore.
Sandra you couldn’t have said it better. There are a handful of rappers whose music i appreciate, but the rest is garbage. I am tired of hearing about money, diamonds, cars, ho’s etc. I have watch this hip hop scene slowly sink away. I give it a couple of more years to stay alive.
Hey Cupcake all that you wrote up top…. Thats every BLACK mans story… so whatcha Sayin.. Hip Hop started with and belongs to blacks ..we aint giving the torch to no other man..sorry
White magazine votes white rapper as the king of hip hop….no surprises here.
@divalicious
—————–

well alright! i like Em…my mom does too! she’s the one who introduced me! smh
He looks like Amber Rose :-/
@ Jay Bee … I believe that every artist’s story is unique in it’s own way whether they are Black, White, Brown, or whatever. Being that the post was about EMINEM I talked about how the talent of this particular artist has impacted both my life and my views of rap music as a whole.
Other artist (rap) that I dig are Kanye West, Andre 3000, Bun B, Drake, Eightball & MGJ, Lil’ Wayne, Ludacris, Nicki Minaj, Scarface and maybe a few more that I jam to on the regular. Of all these artists I can say that I’ve only purchased albums by Kanye West, OutKast, Drake, and Nicki Minaj. (Mainly because my significant other has all the others and what’s his is mine). :0)
One Love!
